NOWA HUTA – MEETING WITH A SOCIALIST CRACOW

After the Second World War Poland found itself in the Soviet sphere of influence. At the end of 1947 a decision was made by Polish and Soviet authorities to build a proletarian city, which would serve as a counterweight to Cracow. This decision was taken because many of the Cracow’s inhabitants expressed their lack of support towards the new regime during the 1946 referendum. The area of two villages, Pleszów and Mogiła, located eastwards from Poland’s former capital was chosen. Unfortunately, this meant that Cracow’s most fertile soils were destroyed. It is worth mentioning that, in Mogiła we can still see one of the oldest (built in 1222) cistercian abbeys.

It all began with the construction of a steel mill, which would later become one of the biggest in Poland, more than 36.000 persons worked there. In the month of June of 1949 the construction of the first houses began, even before a complete plan of the city by Tadeusz Ptaszycki was finalised...

Following the footsteps of Schindler's List in Cracow

Do you want to learn more about the Second World War in Cracow? If that is the case, we strongly recommend you this visit.
During this visit we will see the former Jewish quarter, located in the eastern part of the Kazimierz district. Kazimierz was a city until the end of 18th century, when it was merged with Cracow. We will walk through the alleys and squares immortalised in the famous film “Schindler’s List”, directed in 1993 in Cracow by Steven Spielberg. The movie tells the story of Cracow’s Jews during World War II. In reality, everything took place in the Podgórze district, however, Spielberg shot the movie in the Kazimierz district, due to it being more picturesque and interesting. We will see the Szeroka street, a place where numerous scenes of the movie were shot, then we will enter Remuh synagogue and adjacent Jewish cemetery from the 16th century. Following the streets, we will reach the patio located on the Józefa 12 street.

Wadowice and Kalwaria Zebrzydowska

In this six hour long trip, we will explore Kalwaria Zebrzydowska and Wadowice, located 40 km and 55 km from Cracow respectively. Both places are related with Karol Wojtyła – Holy Father John Paul II. Kalwaria is an impressive complex, located on the top of a hill. It consists of a church, a monastery and trails with chapels dedicated to the Passion of Jesus and Virgin Mary. There are more than 40 chapels, along with a six kilometre trail, in an area with topography similar to Jerusalem. During the Holy Week, spectacles of the Mistery of Passion of Jesus are organised here. Furthermore, alongside the spectacles, pilgrimages and a procession dedicated to Virgin Mary take place. The site was appreciated by UNESCO, which included the impressive mannerist complex, and the surrounding landscape with a park for pilgrims in the 1999 World Heritage List. Thus, Kalwaria became the only Calvary in Europe and the world to be included in that list. We will continue in direction of Wadowice, one of the oldest Polish cities...

It operated as such during all of its existence, however, since 1942 it also became the biggest place of extermination, where the N**i Germans realized the plan of assassination of all European Jews - "the final solution to the Jewish Question" (Endlösung der Judenfrage)...
