1st November - All Saints Day

Everyone that travels to Poland on the 1st of November may be surprised and intrigued by Polish traditions of celebrating All Saints’ Day.
All Saints' Day, falling on November 1, is one of the most important Catholic holidays. It is a unique period of reflection and thoughtfulness.

Special church services are held to commemorate the saints in various towns and cities in Poland. Many people in Poland lay flowers and candles on the graves of deceased family members and friends in cemeteries. This tradition continues through to All Souls’ Day (Dzien Zaduszny or Zaduszki), which is on November 2, but it is not a public holiday.

In Poland, small, traditional sweets are offered in certain cities and sold at the entrance to the cemeteries. Probably the most famous one, apart from the krakowskie miodki (nougat sweets popular in Kraków), is pańska skórka – a specialty of Warsaw. A popular translation of its name to the “Lord’s Skin” makes it sound particularly grim, especially when we consider that it is sold to kids entering a graveyard. However, you can rest safe in the knowledge that the name has changed throughout the centuries.

St. Mary’s Church is one of the most important churches of Kraków, next to the Wawel Cathedral, and one of the most famous Polish architectural monuments.

Exactly 5️⃣4️⃣6️⃣ years ago, on May 25, 1477, Wit Stwosz—less than thirty years old sculptor—started working on the famous St. Mary's Altar of St. Mary's Basilica in the city of Kraków.

The work lasted 12 years and was commissioned to a then little-known master from Nuremberg for the sum of 2,808 florins, that was the equivalent of the annual budget of the Royal City of Kraków. The huge altar—11×13 m (36x42 ft.)—is the largest Gothic altarpiece in Europe, filled with about 200 figures. The realistically sculptured figures are 2.7 m (more than 12 ft.) high; each one was carved out of a tree trunk of lime (linden).

The historic center of Krakow has preserved its 13th-century urban layout with a huge market square and characteristic blocks of St. Mary's Church and the Cloth Hall, and is one of the most recognizable historic buildings in Poland. Its authenticity was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.

In 1941, during the German occupation, the dismantled altarpiece was shipped to the Third Reich on the order of Hans Frank—the Governor-General of that part of occupied Poland. It was recovered in 1946 in Bavaria, hidden in the basement of the heavily bombed Nuremberg Castle. The High Altar underwent major restoration work in Poland and was put back in its place at the Basilica 10 years later.
