St. Mary’s Church is one of the most important churches of Kraków, next to the Wawel Cathedral, and one of the most famous Polish architectural monuments.

Exactly 5️⃣4️⃣6️⃣ years ago, on May 25, 1477, Wit Stwosz—less than thirty years old sculptor—started working on the famous St. Mary's Altar of St. Mary's Basilica in the city of Kraków.

The work lasted 12 years and was commissioned to a then little-known master from Nuremberg for the sum of 2,808 florins, that was the equivalent of the annual budget of the Royal City of Kraków. The huge altar—11×13 m (36x42 ft.)—is the largest Gothic altarpiece in Europe, filled with about 200 figures. The realistically sculptured figures are 2.7 m (more than 12 ft.) high; each one was carved out of a tree trunk of lime (linden).

The historic center of Krakow has preserved its 13th-century urban layout with a huge market square and characteristic blocks of St. Mary's Church and the Cloth Hall, and is one of the most recognizable historic buildings in Poland. Its authenticity was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.

In 1941, during the German occupation, the dismantled altarpiece was shipped to the Third Reich on the order of Hans Frank—the Governor-General of that part of occupied Poland. It was recovered in 1946 in Bavaria, hidden in the basement of the heavily bombed Nuremberg Castle. The High Altar underwent major restoration work in Poland and was put back in its place at the Basilica 10 years later.

80th Krakow Nativity Scenes Contest 2022/2023

Christmas cribs - it is a Christmas tradition here in Kraków to hold a festival called Christmas cribs, where locals make these castles and incorporate some historical monuments of Kraków into these nativity scenes. This year 142 handmade works were created by children, seniors and students who took part in the contest.

The awarded cribs can be admired at the post-competition exhibition, which will be open from December 4 to February 27, 2023 at the Krzysztofory Palace in Kraków.

The most popular and the best Christmas fair in Poland. It’s located on Rynek Glowny (the Main Market Square), in the centre of the old town.
The Krakow Christmas Markets are an ancient tradition for the city. The first markets were organized in 1310, always in the wonderful setting of the Main Market Square.

All the stalls (this year 85) are located between Sukiennice (the Cloth Hall) and Bazylika Mariacka (the St Mary’s Basilica).

KRAKOW, POLAND - Dragon eggs from the Series Game of Thrones the House of Dragons are pictured in the Caves of Wawel Castle on September 19-25, 2022 in Krakow, Poland.

On the terraces of the Wawel Royal Castle, fans of the series "Game of Thrones, the House of the Dragon" are able to sit down on the acclaimed Iron Throne. Traces of Targaryen dragons also appear on Wawel Hill - the skull of the great Balerion and dragon eggs are on display in the caves of the Wawel Castle.

Further into the Subcarpathia, we have the Bieszczady National Park, which is the third largest national park in Poland. 🌲 In 2021, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nearly 80% of the park area is covered with forests, mostly beech, with an admixture of fir and sycamore trees. The park is also popular for the historical and cultural facets like old wooden Greek Orthodox churches and remainder of settlements that were in existance before World War II. 🏞
