On 29 July 1941, the camp commander Karl Fritzch probably selected 10 hostages from among the prisoners in Block 14 in retaliation for the escape of a prisoner Zygmunt Pilawski. He condemned them to death by starvation in the bunker of Block 11. During the selection, a Polish prisoner who was a Franciscan monk and missionary, Maksymilian Kolbe (no. 16670), stepped out of the link and asked the camp commander to take him instead of a desperate selected prisoner Franciszek Gajowniczek (np. 5659). After a brief dispute with Father Kolbe, Fritzch agreed to the substitution, especially when he found out that Kolbe is a Catholic priest. The 10 selected prisoners were led off to Block 11. In the Bunker Register the admission of them is noted without listing names, numbers, the day of admission or day of death.

Maksymilian Kolbe was killed with the poisonous injection on 14 August 1941. He was canonized by the Pope John Paul II in October 1982. Franciszek Gajowniczek survived the camp and died in 1995.

Wawel Cathedral holds a special place in the history of the Polish State due to the fact that it was the church of Polish kings for four hundred years. Beginning from Władysław the Short, all but two Polish kings – Stanisław Leszczyński and Stanisław August Poniatowski – had their coronations at Wawel Cathedral. On the 20th of January, 1320, the coronation ceremony of King Władysław the Short, who unified the Polish state, took place. From that time on, the most important state ceremonies: coronations, weddings, baptisms and funeral ceremonies of Polish royalty were celebrated at Wawel Cathedral’s High Altar.

Escape from Auschwitz I - 75 years ago

Eugeniusz Bendera, Kazimierz Piechowski, Stanisław Jaster and Józef Lempart were employed in the Hauptwirtschaftslager Kommando [HWL-main SS garrison equipment repository]. On Saturday June 20, 1942, they made an exceptionally daring escape from the camp. It had been planned and prepared in details in advance. On that day in the afternoon, when the majority of prisoners and SS men finished their work, they left the camp. They reported in the guard house that a Kommando consisting of four persons had to leave in order to take out the rubbish. The SS man on duty noted down this fact, without paying particular attention to the prisoners. Without problems they reached the HWL building, which was already closed at the time. Through the hatch opened in advance, they reached the basement from where, using duplicate keys, they continued to the repositories. They had to use a crowbar only to open the door to the weapons storage. Then they put on SS uniforms and took the weapons. Eugeniusz Bendera took Steyer 220 car from the nearby SS garage. The car was used by SS-Hauptsturmführer Paul Kreutzmann, head of the HWL. Shortly after, they left the repository area in the car. While crossing the checkpoint of the large guard chain, Piechowski, disguised in the uniform of the senior SS man, ordered with his hand to lift the gate. The guard did not stop the car, carried out the order and the escapees left the area around the camp. Near Maków Podhalański the car broke down, so they had to continue their escape walking.

Kazimierz Piechowski and Eugeniusz Bendera reached the Kielce region, where the former became a soldier in the Home Army (AK) and fought in its ranks until the end of the war. The latter, having obtained fake documents, was employed in Organisation Todt, where he worked as a car mechanic in Ukraine. He lived there until the arrival of the Red Army and then came back to Poland. Józef Lempart, in turn, was hiding in the vicinity of Maków Podhalański, in the Zachełmna village, where his parents came from. He also managed to survive until the end of the war.

Witold Pilecki, one of the leaders of the camp resistance movement, knew about the escape. He provided one of the escapees, Stanisław Jaster, with a report about the situation in the camp in order to deliver it to the leaders of the Home Army. Jaster probably completed the task and then became a soldier of the special operations unit, code-named Kosa-Osa, subordinated to the Home Army Headquarters. He perished in Warsaw in the autumn of 1943 in mysterious circumstances.

The escape, for the reasons which remain unknown, did not result in any major repressions in the camp. But the parents of Stanisław Jaster were incarcerated in the camp; they both perished. Exceptional ingenuity and courage lifted the spirits of many prisoners. The escape itself quickly became a camp legend, shared by the prisoners.

St. Mary's Church in Krakow is a Brick Gothic church re-built in the 14th century (originally built in the early 13th century), adjacent to the Main Market Square.

On every hour, a trumpet signal—called the Hejnał mariacki—is played from the top of the taller of St. Mary's two towers. The plaintive tune breaks off in mid-stream, to commemorate the famous 13th century trumpeter, who was shot in the throat while sounding the alarm before the Mongol attack on the city.
