“I have a Polish birth certificate of my ancestor. Is it enough to get Polish citizenship based on it?” 🤷‍♀️

We often get this question, and the answer is: a birth certificate is not enough, as it only confirms the fact that the person was born in Poland or Polish territory. Because Polish citizenship is passed via the ‘right of blood’, (and not ‘the right of soil’), it is important to prove that a person was born to Polish parents, or that he or she had Polish citizenship.

A birth certificate can be a great source of information as it often contains details such as parents’ names and their dates of births, annotation about their marriage, and residential information. These details can be used to track further evidence and search for records needed to support Polish citizenship claims. 🕵️‍♀️

So, while the birth certificate does not confirm Polish citizenship, it can be a great starting point to locate needed documents and research activities across archives and other institutions in Poland.

This is a sample of the document confirming that an applicant has had Polish citizenship since birth issued by the Masovian Voivodeship Office in Warsaw. Polish citizenship is passed via the right of blood, so if one of the child’s parents was a Polish citizen, is it inherited on the day of birth by a child.

First step is to determine eligibility for Polish citizenship. Then you need to lodge a Polish citizenship confirmation application with the respective Voivodeship Office in Poland and as a result you receive such a document.

Polish citizenship law is complex, and analysis of eligibility criteria can be overwhelming and here our friendly team may come in useful.

Another interesting fact we would like to share with you today is the citizenship of a child born before 1951 as a legitimate child (child from marriage). 👶👦

According to a Polish citizenship law which was in force when such a birth occurred, such a child could only acquire Polish citizenship after her/his father. Even if the mother held Polish citizenship, her child’s citizenship depended on the father. In such case it is required to first provide a marriage certificate of child’s parents, and then records and evidence proving that child’s father was a Polish citizen. 🇵🇱

The law changed on the 8th of January 1951, but until then, this was the only way to pass and acquire citizenship for legitimate children born before 1951.

Even though we may consider this Polish citizenship law outdated and discriminatory towards women, it is still being taken under consideration while processing Polish citizenship cases nowadays as it was applicable to this child’s citizenship status.

On this day, 4th of June 1989, the first free elections took place in Poland, marking a significant moment in the country's transition from communist rule to democracy. These elections were a result of the Round Table Talks between the communist government and the opposition, particularly the Solidarity movement, led by L**h Wałęsa. ✌️🇵🇱

Poland, like many Eastern Bloc countries, was under communist rule following World War II. The 1980s saw increasing economic problems and growing opposition to the communist regime, culminating in the formation of the Solidarity movement, the first independent labour union in a Warsaw Pact country.

In early 1989, the government, facing economic crises and increasing public discontent, entered into negotiations with the opposition. The Round Table Talks, held from February 6 to April 5, 1989, resulted in several key agreements, including the decision to hold partially free elections.

The elections held on June 4 and June 18, 1989, were not entirely free by today's standards but represented a major breakthrough at the time.
✔️Sejm Elections: Only 35% of the seats in the Sejm (the lower house of Parliament) were open to non-communist candidates. The remaining 65% were reserved for the PZPR and its allies.
✔️Senate Elections: The newly created Senate (the upper house of Parliament) had all 100 seats open for free election, without any pre-allocation to the communist party.

The election results were a landslide victory for the opposition. Solidarity won 99 out of 100 Senate seats and all the open seats in the Sejm. This overwhelming victory demonstrated the public's desire for change and weakened the communist party's grip on power.
☑️The results forced the communist party to negotiate further concessions, eventually leading to the formation of a non-communist government. On August 24, 1989, Tadeusz Mazowiecki, a Solidarity leader, became the first non-communist Prime Minister in Eastern Europe since the early post-war years.
☑️These elections effectively ended the communist monopoly on power in Poland and set a precedent for other Eastern Bloc countries, contributing to the broader collapse of communism in Central and Eastern Europe.

The 1989 elections in Poland are considered a pivotal moment in the country's history, symbolizing the end of communist rule and the beginning of a democratic transformation. They paved the way for full parliamentary elections in 1991 and the establishment of Poland as a democratic republic with a market-oriented economy.

In common it requires the actual application form to be filled in in Polish, providing documents proving applicant’s identity and kinship to Polish ancestor, and documents confirming ancestor’s Polish citizenship in a form of formal and legal evidence. It is a long holiday week in Poland - "Majówka". It refers to the May Day holiday, celebrated on May 1st (Labour day), and May 3rd (Polish Constitution day). It's a time when people traditionally take advantage of the long weekend to relax, spend time with family and friends, and enjoy various outdoor activities. The term "majówka" comes from the Polish word "maj," which means May. 🌺🌸🌷

One of the main traditions of Majówka is spending time outdoors, particularly in parks, forests, or by lakes and rivers, enjoying the arrival of spring. Many people take trips to the countryside or organize picnics and barbecues. It's also common to see organized events such as concerts, festivals, or fairs taking place during Majówka.

In addition to outdoor activities, May Day in Poland has historical significance as International Workers' Day, commemorating the labor movement and workers' rights. In the past, it was marked by demonstrations and rallies, although in recent years, the focus has shifted more towards leisure and relaxation.

Polish citizenship is passed by “the right of blood”. If one of the parents holds Polish citizenship (or is a person of Polish descent), it is passed to the child irrespective of whether the child was born in Poland or abroad.

It also applies to people born in countries with the “right of soil” e.g. USA. If you were born in the USA to at least one Polish parent (or a parent of Polish descent – to your Polish grandparents), you can claim Polish citizenship despite the fact you acquired US citizenship at your birth.
