Today we celebrate the 74th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising. It all started on the 1st of August at 5pm.

Yesterday I was at the military cemetary of Powązki, lighting candles with a group of veterans. We visited the graves of those who defended the powerplant. I almost emptied a box of matches when it hit me, that each match is one boy who gave his life. And I only visited a small portion of all the graves dedicated to the Uprising.

Today we celebrate the Constitution Day - the anniversary of enacting the constitution, which took place on the 3rd of May, 1791. It was the first document in Europe, the second in the world, to establish modern legislation.

FYI, most Poles celebrate that day by organising barbeques :)

Płonące getto. Noc z 20 na 21 kwietnia 1943 roku. Widok z kamienicy Goldstanda (pl. Dąbrowskiego 8/Kredytowa 9) w kierunku północnym.

Absolutny unikat. Jeden z zaledwie trzech kolorowych slajdów przedstawiających płonące getto. Zrobił je z dachu siedmiopiętrowej kamienicy Goldstanda mieszkający w niej wówczas Zbigniew Borowczyk.
Najprawdopodobniej płonie szop szczotkarzy (zespół
fabryczek i warsztatów produkujących na rzecz wojsk
niemieckich) w kwartale ulic: Świętojerska, Wałowa,
Franciszkańska, Bonifraterska. Na tle płomieni widoczna wieża Ratusza przy placu Teatralnym. Zbigniew Borowczyk pracował dla poznańskiej firmy Franciszka Gregera, która w 1939 roku otworzyła filię w Warszawie przy Nowym Świecie. Firma Foto-Greger była pionierem w dziedzinie barwnej fotografii, Borowczyk miał dostęp do wysokiej jakości sprzętu – stąd zapewne dobra jakość zdjęć robionych nocą oraz stan ich zachowania. Swoje archiwum fotograficzne zakopał w piwnicy. Udało się je
odnaleźć w 1945 roku. Jego syn Edward ujawnił istnienie slajdów dopiero ponad 70 lat później, przekazując je do muzeum. To pierwsza publikacja jednego z tych zdjęć w druku.
