Laguna Grande, will it recover, and if so when?

October 1,2015 Update on Laguna Grande status!

First I would like to address that Enchanted Island Eco Tours will be CLOSED for our annual maintenance and vacation from October 1, through November 3, 2015! We will be back in high season operation Tuesday through Saturday November 4, 2015 forward!

Laguna Grande is making a very slow improvement! We are seeing small concentrations of bioluminescence in the lagoon now, and hope that the passing of the Super Moon tidal event will be the turning point for the lagoons start toward recovery.

Note, that the recovery process will be long, as this Dead Zone event led to a complete ecosystem crash. Many hundreds of dead fish and other marine life have to complete the decomposition process and return to the compost at the bottom of the lagoon! This will then and only then reduce the large amount of fuel “Dead Fish & Marine Life” that large blooms of bacteria are feeding on leading to the loss of oxygen in the lagoon. With decomposition back to normal, we will see the bacteria counts return to normal and the ecosystem start to recover.

Recovery Signs! Marine life reestablishing life in the lagoon, fish, crustaceans, we have seen this in our last visit. Schools of fish being fed on by birds and predatory fish such as Tarpon and Snapper, so we know that the oxygen levels are starting to recover! Strong tidal movements, such as Lunar tides, like the recent and ongoing Super Moon, very low strong outbound tides, removing large quantities of depleted or stag water. Then extreme high tide returning freshly oxygenated ocean water into the lagoon! On these inbound tides, we are seeing Bioluminescent Seeding in the channel riding the strong inbound tide into the lagoon!

Recovery? Events like this are very hard to lay an exact time window on, as it is a First Time Event in my 19 years operating in Laguna Grande! So I don’t really have anything to compare it to, but ongoing weather patterns, favorable weather conditions, will play a large role in the recovery time line! Note, Mid-September through the end of February are considered to be the Null Window or the lowest concentrations of bioluminescence due to change of conditions! Cooler temperatures, Longer windows of cloudy weather, Drop in water column temperatures, Influx of fresh water via rain, larger than normal wave movement due to cold fronts approaching PR, stirring of the water column causing normally clear water to become clouded and blocking sunlight pe*******on! Due to the Null Window, I feel that improvements will be small and patchy the bioluminescence may be up and down in its concentrations. Some days or weeks may be fair and others may be poor, but I feel that the lagoon will not make a full recovery or see the strong concentrations of bioluminescence that Laguna Grande is known for until Peak Season or the start of March 2016!

Guest Looking to Book! Many may be asking, will it be worth booking from November, 2015 forward? I would say that even in years past during the Null Window or Low Season Laguna Grande is a “Wonder of Nature” beautiful to see even in normal low concentrations! But due to this event please pay close attention to the Lunar Phases and try to book in the new moon forward as to avoid light pollution. As responsible outfitters with a true love for nature and our guests best possible experience in mind, I would encourage all guests looking to see Laguna Grande’s bioluminescence to go ahead and make your bookings! Keep in mind that even with all in our favor the Bioluminescence at best will be fair! But this is still a wonders sight to behold, if we see that the lagoons recovery is not at an acceptable level and your experience is not going to be quality! We will advise you upfront, no later than 24 hours before your scheduled tour date and make cancellation at no charge to you! We can at that time offer you alternative tours if you choose to join us we will be glad to have you!

Join Us! We will be making regular updates via Facebook and working toward making sure that our guests are well informed leading to our goal of A Fun, Safe, Memorable, Experience Every Time! Our Offices will be open in October Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00am to 3:00pm if you need to talk with someone or you can make your booking live online at, ecotourspuertorico.com find live calendar feeds, Trip Advisor reviews and full activity descriptions and videos! Find something that you like and fits your schedule, you can book on line!

Thank you for reading and we hope to see you soon!

Glow rating for 9/4/2015 is still poor! Due to a still unstable environment, Laguna Grande is still very weak. We were seeing some improvement but due to Tuesday's heavy rain, sediments and lack of good tidal flow the bioluminescence is diminishing instead of improving! I'm very sorry to say that if you are looking to seeing this normally amazing natural wonder, now is not the time!

I hope that all with the privilege to share this wonder of nature are responsible and advise the guests wanting to visit Laguna Grande during this Dead Zone event that now is not the time!

All guests booked for Saturday 9/5/2015 we will be sending out cancelation notices starting in the morning! This is due to a still declining concentration and a glow rating of 1 or very poor!

I'm very sorry and hope that all can understand that this event will take time for a full recovery!

New Tropical system moving in the Atlantic, this will effect the overall recovery of Laguna Grande and its bioluminescence. If the system strengthens and bring rain we could see negative outcome from this!

We will be keeping an eye on it!j

Laguna Grande Report! 09/02/2015

After seeing positive factors at work like storm surge , lunar tidal movement we started to see improvement thus justifying my glow rating of a solid 4 out of 10 or fair!

But now we are seeing the concentration crash again ;( This in my eyes is that the ecosystem has just completely crashed and although we are seeing a slow recovery, the ecosystem is still unstable. So small shifts in the weather, like last night heavy rainstorm that was needed as the island is in a bad drought, but not needed in the area of the lagoon. The rain is fresh water and a change in air temperature, runoff from the large volume of rainwater brings sediments into the water column clouding it and prevent sunlight pe*******on!

This is very bad news for a already weak ecosystem, normally these type of weather events would not be a large problem to a stable or strong ecosystem over short periods of time! Much like the storm that rolled over Fajardo and Laguna Grande last night around 6:00 to 9:00pm. But as the ecosystem is weak this fresh water layer, sediments and a day of 09/02/2015 cloudy weather have set the bioluminescent concentration to crash or become very poor!

I am very concerned, peak season for this lagoon is March through first two weeks of September this is when all the right conditions are in play! The strongest concentrations happen during this window, but this "Dead Zone" event happened at the end of this window, mid-September through February we will have the lowest concentrations due to weather, cooler temperatures, long windows of cloudy weather, rainy months. If the next two weeks do not bring long hot sunny days, minimal to no rain, we very well may see the ecosystem not have the conditions needed to make a full recovery!

As of 09/02/2015 my glow rating based on a scale of 1 to 10 is a 2 or poor!

Well I'm happy to report that bioluminescence has returned to Laguna Grande! We are seeing the start of seeding in the channel along the tree line in the lagoon and even out into the center! I feel strong that after the passing of the lunar cycle and several good strong sunny days we should be back with good concentration!

I feel that Erica and her 3 to 5' storm surge along with the current lunar cycle tide event has created the flush that was need to re-oxygenate the lagoon and flush out decay and stag water!

Thank you lord!
The showing tonight on a scale of 1 to 10 was a solid 4!

Danny became the first major hurricane (Category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale) of the 2015 Atlantic hurricane season Friday afternoon.
A NOAA research plane Friday afternoon found maximum sustained winds of 115 mph.
Hurricane Danny was located about 860 miles east of the Leeward Islands in the eastern Atlantic Ocean as of 5 p.m. EDT Friday.
Danny has likely reached peak intensity and is expected to begin weakening soon.
Danny will track west-northwest, reaching the Leeward Islands Monday.
A weakened Danny may bring drought-relieving rainfall to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands early next week.

I will close the night with, this event being one of those rare or almost never seen, that only comes together when all factors and conditions are just right! We can not fix or speed up the process. Now it's just time for nature to take its course and the dark waters will be back to the beautiful natural wonder that is Laguna Grande!

21/08/2015

From what I'm reading better than 85% of these have been ocean floor based!

21/08/2015

For those of you not aware of the average monthly seismic activity, it is on the scale of 80 movements!

The past month has been 355!

21/08/2015

The idea is that movement at the ocean floor, more than normal could cause an upwelling of nutrients, thus leading to the Bloom and then coupled with drought, high temperatures and we have our event?

21/08/2015
21/08/2015

Puerto Rico has had: (M1.5 or greater)

5 earthquakes today
57 earthquakes in the past 7 days
355 earthquakes in the past month
1,946 earthquakes in the past year
The largest earthquake in Puerto Rico:

today: 3.4 in Puerto Rico
this week: 3.7 in Dorado, Puerto Rico, United States
this month: 4.6 in Dorado, Puerto Rico, United States
this year: 4.6 in Dorado, Puerto Rico, United States

21/08/2015

Doing some more digging and I had no idea that the movement around the northeast coast was so high! Yellow dots!

21/08/2015

The following factors may have played a roll in the "hypoxia" event and lead to the start of our problem!
1). Algae Bloom
2). Drought
3). High Temperatures or Thermal Pollution
4.) Agriculture & Sewage Runoff
5). Sea-Quakes
I am leaning toward 1, 2 and 3!
Although Seismic activity in the Viieques & Culebra straights has been above the normal and ocean floor based. That could be why we are seeing higher than normal sea grass and sediments in the water column.

Will we see Danny? If yes the storm surge coupled with the upcoming full moon cycle could very well be the large tidal movement that Laguna Grande needs! Let see :)

Readers Note:

I have compiled the information need to write my conclusion as to the "Fish Kill"! We are looking at a natural event, where all factors for "hypoxia" or stagnation have come together and created the most common cause for large losses of fish!

I will wright my article and post my findings over the next couple of days!

Those looking to see Bioluminescence over the next week/weeks stay posted as I will be watching the progress of this sad but natural event, that has lead to no glowing in Laguna Grande!

Feel free to email me with questions at [email protected]

Hello:

Please be advise the Bioluminescent lagoon kayak Adventure until further notice has been canceled.

We just got a report of a very low showing of organism in Laguna Grande. This may be due to a yellow flag in the area of Seven Seas beach referring to high bacteria counts in the water, ongoing construction leading to sediment build up in the water. Combination of the two have created unfavorable conditions for the bioluminescence.

Tours to see the bioluminescence have been canceled until further notice.

We apologize for the inconvenience and Thank you for your understanding.
