2019 was a whirlwind year for us! In Decem0ber of 2018, we took the family on vacation to an amazing island recommended to us by Michelle’s cousin. Vieques, Puerto Rico is a tiny island just 7 miles off the mainland of Puerto Rico and measures just about 4 miles wide by 20 miles long. For Dave and Michelle, it was love at first sight - from the wild horses that roam everywhere to the countless beaches and the world’s brightest bioluminescent bay. The restaurants have delicious food and the local people are welcoming and helpful.
When Dave decided to find a place to invest in, Michelle quickly arranged for another trip to Vieques! By February we were back and took a whirlwind weekend tour of 10 plus properties to see if we could find a place that could double as our second home, and a vacation rental on Airbnb. By the end of the weekend - and a big shout-out to our realtor, Lin Wetherby at Rainbow Realty - we had made an offer on a two-building property in the fishing villiage of Esperanza on the Caribbean side of the island. Esperanza is the main tourist hub and the house had the best of both worlds - two properties to maximize income, an in-town location within walking distance to restaurants and beaches, yet in a quieter section of town and with a private yard.
By the end of April, after some bumps in the road, we went back down to close on the property. Another big shout out to Fembi Mortgage for helping everything to go through as smoothly as possible. This was another whirlwind experience - we cleaned out and interviewed house managers and contractors to repair a few minor cracks in the cement (the only damaged sustained from hurricane Maria. We also wanted to give the house a brand-new coat of paint.
We flew home exhausted and a bit overwhelmed. But we had confidence in the wonderful house manager/construction owner/jack-of-all-trades person we had hired.
