WHAT TO DO IF YOU SEE A LEATHERBACK TURTLE ON THE BEACH --
(1) Alert the authorities! The easiest thing is to call the local police (for Luquillo/Fajardo beaches, call the Luquillo Police @ 787-889-2727) -- they know how to contact the appropriate people at DRNA who are trained and permitted to interact with the turtles.
(2) Do not interfere with the turtle in any way -- Stay at least 50-feet away from the turtle. Stay behind the turtle so as to not be in her field of vision. Keep your voices down. Keep noise to a minimum.
(3) If the encounter is during darkness, do NOT use "white light" near the turtle -- no flashlights, mobile phone lights, flash-photography, headlamps, etc.
(4) All marine turtles are endangered and protected species. Interacting/interfering with them (essentially "harassing" them, to borrow a term from the endangered species folks) without the proper permits is a Federal offense. Wait for authorized people to show up to help with the situation.
