One of the island’s hidden gems, however, are the bioluminescent bays. Puerto Rico is home to three bioluminescent bays: Mosquito Bay on the island of Vieques, Laguna Granda in Fajardo, and La Parguera in Lajas. 🌌

For most people visiting Rincon, La Parguera is the closest bio bay to visit, just over an hour away by car. To get to the bay, you will need to travel through mangrove channels, so an experienced guide is a must!

“María García era mi abuela y Ramón Acevedo García era mi padre. Cuando era pequeño, pasaba los veranos con María. ¡La cabra que se ve en la foto de María y un surfista era mi mascota! Afortunadamente para él, como mascota vivió una larga vida. Los surfistas nos visitaban constantemente. Pasé muchas noches en la playa con ellos. Intentaron enseñarme a surfear, pero nunca pude ponerme de pie. Las noches eran especialmente memorables. Había muy poca luz artificial y las estrellas eran increíblemente brillantes y numerosas. ¡En luna llena se podía leer un libro a la luz de la luna! Comí mi primera paella en la playa, hecha con pescado recién capturado y completa con arena.” - Russ Acevedo

En honor a Doña María y Ramón, Maria’s Luxury Villa fue construida con dos lados, cada uno con un carácter distintivo, y en toda la casa hay fotografías de María, Ramón y área de Rincón que datan desde 1945 hasta principios de la década de 2000.

In celebration of International Women’s Day, we want to pay homage to the matriarch of our family and Maria’s Beach, Doña Maria Garcia.

What was initially called Rincon Point was quickly changed to Maria’s Beach because of Doña Maria’s hospitality in welcoming and looking after visiting surfers from around the world.

In honor of Doña Maria and Ramon, Maria’s Luxury Villa was built with two sides, each with distinctive character, and throughout the house there are pictures of Maria, Ramon, and the Rincón area dating from 1945 to the early 2000s.

Just a short walk from Maria’s Luxury Villa is the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve.

Established by a grassroots effort in 2004, the Reserve spans 1,400 acres and is home to a variety of wildlife including sea turtles, nurse sharks, colorful reef fish, and all seven endangered coral species.

It’s a beautiful stretch to snorkel during calm days, and when large NW swells march towards the island, the reef helps put on a show as the iconic big-wave surf spot known by the same name, Tres Palmas.

In a 2020 article for ARinconvenientTruth.com, local marine scientist Dr. Chelsea Harms-Tuohy of Isla Mar explains that “certain actions are prohibited within the Reserve boundaries, including fishing and anchoring. This ‘no take’ regulation also prohibits removing sea shells and dead corals – leave them on the beach because the breakdown of their organic materials provides nutrients that other organisms use to grow and thrive.”

What does Dr. Harms-Tuohy recommend you take? Trash! “The Reserve is not immune to plastics and trash – both on land and in the water – so you are welcome to collect and properly dispose of all trash you find.”
