Vieques is a small island located about 13 kilometers (8 miles) east of Puerto Rico’s main island in the Caribbean Sea. Covering an area of approximately 135 square kilometers (52 square miles), Vieques is part of the Puerto Rican archipelago and has a population of around 8,300 residents. Its main towns are Isabel Segunda on the north side and Esperanza on the southern coast.

Known for its pristine beaches and natural beauty, Vieques has become a sought-after destination for travelers seeking a tranquil escape. The island is home to the renowned Mosquito Bay, the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world, where microscopic organisms produce a dazzling glow in the water when disturbed. Vieques’ beaches, such as Playa Caracas and Playa Negra, are celebrated for their unspoiled charm, crystal-clear waters, and dramatic landscapes.

Vieques also has a rich history, with influences from Taíno Indigenous culture, Spanish colonization, and U.S. naval presence. The U.S. Navy controlled large portions of the island until 2003, using it for training exercises. Today, much of that land has been transformed into the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge, offering protection to native flora and fauna and providing visitors with hiking trails and opportunities for wildlife observation.

Despite its popularity, Vieques has retained a laid-back atmosphere. The island offers a mix of activities, from snorkeling and kayaking to exploring historical sites like the 19th-century El Fortín Conde de Mirasol fort. With its blend of natural wonders, history, and welcoming communities, Vieques is a gem of the Caribbean.
