Women at the Helm:
How Puerto Rican Entrepreneurs Are Driving Tourism Growth

Puerto Rico, a Caribbean gem known for its vibrant culture, lush landscapes, and resilient spirit, has seen its tourism sector flourish despite challenges like Hurricane Maria (2017) and the COVID-19 pandemic. Central to this revival are women entrepreneurs, whose innovative ventures are reshaping the island’s tourism landscape. By blending tradition with modernity, these leaders are not only boosting the economy but also redefining Puerto Rico’s global image as a destination of authenticity and sustainability.

The Rise of Women Entrepreneurs

Women comprise nearly 40% of small business owners in Puerto Rico, with a growing presence in tourism. Post-Maria, female-led initiatives emerged as pillars of recovery, addressing gaps in eco-tourism, cultural preservation, and hospitality. Today, sectors like gastronomy, adventure tourism, and tech-driven travel services thrive under women’s leadership, contributing significantly to an industry that accounts for 7% of the island’s GDP.

Pioneers Leading the Charge

1. **Spoon Experiences (Culinary Tourism)**: Co-founded by Leslie Padró, this San Juan-based company offers immersive culinary tours that highlight Puerto Rican cuisine. By partnering with local chefs and farmers, Padró empowers communities while attracting food enthusiasts worldwide.

2. **Hacienda Don Carmela (Eco-Tourism)**: María Miranda transformed her family’s coffee plantation into a sustainable agritourism hub. Visitors engage in coffee harvesting and rainforest hikes, fostering environmental stewardship.

3. **Puerto Rico Wellness Tours (Health Tourism)**: Dr. María Rivera combines wellness retreats with cultural immersion, offering yoga sessions in historic Old San Juan and holistic workshops rooted in Taíno traditions.

4. **Casilda Cocina Creativa (Culinary Innovation)**: Brenda Calderón’s Casilda Cocina Creativa reimagines Puerto Rican cuisine through a modern lens. Located in a restored Santurce warehouse, her restaurant merges ancestral recipes with avant-garde techniques, drawing both locals and tourists eager to experience the island’s culinary evolution.

5. **Natalia Vallejo (Award-Winning Gastronomy)**: Chef Natalia Vallejo, the 2023 James Beard Award winner, has put Puerto Rico on the global culinary map with her restaurant Cocina al Fondo. Her farm-to-table philosophy emphasizes hyper-local ingredients, celebrating the island’s biodiversity and reviving heirloom crops.

6. **Turismo Borincano (Cultural Heritage)**: Gloricel Escribano’s Turismo Borincano offers immersive journeys into Puerto Rico’s heartland. From storytelling hikes in the central mountains to workshops on traditional *jíbaro* (rural) crafts, Escribano ensures visitors connect deeply with the island’s cultural roots.

7. **Lau Pottery (Artisan Revival)**: Laura Serrano’s Lau Pottery studio in Rincón preserves Puerto Rico’s ceramic traditions while infusing contemporary designs. Her workshops invite travelers to create their own pieces, bridging past and present through art.

8. **Semila PR (Sustainable Agriculture)**: Decenia Vega’s Semila PR champions regenerative farming and agro-tourism. Through partnerships with small-scale farmers, her initiative educates visitors on sustainable practices while supplying fresh produce to local restaurants, closing the loop between tourism and agriculture.

Navigating Storms
Despite their impact, women face hurdles such as limited access to capital—only 12% of Puerto Rican women secure business loans. Cultural expectations around caregiving and post-disaster rebuilding add layers of complexity. Yet, their resilience shines; many leverage digital platforms to reach global audiences and crowdfund recovery efforts.

Opportunities and Support Systems
Government programs like *Mujeres de Isla* and NGOs such as the Puerto Rico Women’s Foundation provide grants and mentorship. Collaborations with organizations like Parallel18, a startup accelerator, foster innovation. Social media has also been pivotal, enabling entrepreneurs like Vallejo and Serrano to market experiences directly to travelers seeking authenticity.

Cultural Impact: Preserving Heritage
These businesses are cultural custodians. From artisan cooperatives reviving *mundillo* lace-making to tours showcasing Afro-Puerto Rican bomba dance, women integrate heritage into every guest experience. Laura Serrano’s pottery workshops and Gloricel Escribano’s rural immersions exemplify this commitment, ensuring traditions endure for future generations.

Future Outlook: Sustainable Growth
The focus on sustainable and community-centric tourism aligns with global trends. Visionaries like Decenia Vega (Semila PR) and María Miranda (Hacienda Don Carmela) are expanding into regenerative travel and agro-tourism, positioning Puerto Rico as a forward-thinking destination. With increasing recognition of women’s economic contributions, the island is poised to become a model for inclusive tourism.

Puerto Rican women entrepreneurs are more than business leaders; they are architects of renewal. Their ventures, rooted in culture and sustainability, drive tourism growth while fostering social equity. From Brenda Calderón’s culinary artistry to Natalia Vallejo’s award-winning cuisine, their work redefines Puerto Rico’s identity. As they break barriers and build alliances, their legacy promises a thriving, resilient Puerto Rico—one where women’s leadership lights the way forward.

"We’re not just rebuilding; we’re reimagining our island," says María Miranda of Hacienda Don Carmela. Through their vision, Puerto Rico’s tourism sector isn’t just recovering—it’s soaring. 🌴✨

This article celebrates the dynamism of Puerto Rican women, whose ingenuity and grit are transforming challenges into opportunities, ensuring tourism remains a beacon of hope and economic vitality.

--

The U.S. Forest Service announced that El Yunque National Forest's recreational corridor in Río Grande, as well as El Portal visitor center, will be closed during the Christmas holidays.

Thanksgiving will be the only holiday when the main recreation areas will be open to the public. However, El Portal de El Yunque will be closed on that date. On Christmas, New Year's and Three Kings Day, the recreational corridor will be closed, as will the visitor center.

On Christmas Eve, the PR 191 corridor will have regular operations from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and El Portal de El Yunque will be open until 3:00 p.m. On New Year's Eve, both the recreational area and El Portal will operate on their regular schedule.

Although, these areas will be closed on the aforementioned dates, the public will be able to visit other parts of El Yunque such as the Angelito trail and Puente Roto recreational area, in Luquillo; the El Toro wild trail, in Canóvanas; and, the PR-186 recreational corridor, in Río Grande, where attractions such as Quebrada Sonadora, Quebrada Grande recreational area and the Río Espíritu Santo bridge are located.
