One of our favorite stories!

Halloween/Day of the Dead in the Forts of San Juan! 👻

Puerto Rico is an island full of legends, myths, and spooky stories. Although many of them take place in other cities and towns, 2 of these legends take place within the Forts themselves: The Dungeon of the Chinese man and The Devil’s Sentry Box. These legends were written down by Puerto Rican author Cayetano Coll y Toste. Let’s talk about the Sentry Box:

La Garita del Diablo (1790)

“In the Fortress of San Cristobal, there visited a young mulata and her aunt named Dina. She was fascinated with the Fixed Regiment and also attended mass at San Francisco church. The soldiers of the fort were also caught in her attention. But one in particular would be noticed by Dina, his name was Sanchez. This soldier, who was also a musician, dedicated verdes to her like:

"Bella Dina, Bella Dina
Quiéreme, por Dios, mi cielo,
que la suerte me es indina
Se tu, niña, mi consuelo!"

Dina also fell in love with Sanchez but her aunt wouldn’t permit it. She learns that Sanchez is stationed at the Sentry box in the Fortin del Espigón in the north part of San Cristobal. One night, while everyone was asleep, Dina left the house and went to the Sentry box. Sanchez was there playing his guitar and noticed Dina. Here they confess their love for each other and Dina convinces Sanchez to leave far away with her and even brought him civilian clothing. Sanchez accepts and they are both never heard from again. The following day, the guards cry out a warning when they notice that Sanchez is missing. Officers mention that he’s not the first to go missing down there. From that moment, soldiers and citizens of San Juan were convinced that the Sentry box is vistes by the Devil.”

"Bella Dina, Bella Dina
