¡Enhorabuena!

The Vaquita o Pbocoena Sinus sp.The latest report by the International Committee for the Recovery of the Vaquita (CIRVA) estimates that only between 6 and 22 individuals remained alive in 2018. It is possible, though, that there no more than 10 vaquitas left.
Vaquita are often caught and drowned in gillnets used by illegal fishing operations in marine protected areas within Mexico's Gulf of California. The population has dropped drastically in the last few years.
In the fall of 2018 they spotted live vaquita, and among them at least one calf, evidence that the species was still reproducing. The recent sightings give hope to conservationists fighting to save the species from extinction, but that careful optimism is contrasted with regular reports of continued gillnet fishing activity in the vaquita’s habitat
Illegal fishing continues to be an issue, and vaquita are drowning as by-catch in nets set for totoaba. Scientists believe that the vaquita can recover even from its very low numbers but time is running out.
But ilegal fishing continues despite increased efforts to end the practice. The government is also under renewed pressure from local fishermen. Many in the small communities along the Sea of Cortez depend on fisheries as their main source of income.
That's one reason conservation is really hard. In one hand you're dealing with people's income and in the other with a species at the brink of extinction.
Last year payments that were supposed to compensate fishermen for not being able to fish stopped abruptly last year after President Andrés Manuel López Obrador took office. Efforts to replace harmful fishing gear with more sustainable alternatives have also stalled as fishermen complain that the only gear approved for fishing isn’t working for them. Fishermen are feeling left out of the conversation and keep airing their frustration on social media.
Intregration of the community is key to achieving sustainable conservation practices. The government needs to support and hear the needs of the community. What are your thoughts on this?

There are only so many fish in the sea. And our appetite for seafood has already stressed many wild fisheries to the breaking point. Meanwhile, the planet's growing population will only further increase the need for animal protein, one of the most resource-intensive types of food to produce.

Here’s a helpful diagram depicting habitat fragmentation. My area, and many others, are seeing extensive, human caused fragmentation, which leads to a plethora of issues if land is not developed responsibly. This is why it’s so important for us to try and restore native habitats in our own yards.

Habitat fragmentation happens in many facets, including urbanization, agricultural development, and housing development. Although these expansions are not entirely preventable, it is important to keep a few key things in mind. Here are a few issues we’re seeing with current human caused habitat fragmentation:

• Once large habitats are divided into smaller, more isolated habitats, which creates less biodiversity of native species and ecosystem decay

• It may introduce disease to native species from nearby domesticated animals

• Increased crowding and competition for native species, for food and reproduction

• Eventually creates smaller gene pools

• Causes the “Edge Effect”... altering light, temperature and wind exposure to species that may not have dealt with originally (or evolved to deal with) example; clearing a forested area and now exposing a cluster of shade loving woodland plants to sunlight and higher temperatures. Those particular plants may have supported unique species

• Many bird species evolved to stay within heavily forested areas and rarely venture out to avoid predation from avian predators

• Introduces invasive plant and insect species

This is just a reminder for all of us to keep advocating and planting native plants in our own yards to help combat habitat fragmentation. It doesn’t matter how big or small your yards may be, as long as we pitch in and do our part, together. It only takes a little change to have a huge, positive effect!
