Continued Poor Maritime Conditions in the North and East, Dry Weather Expected

The National Weather Service has issued a warning about threatening marine currents along the beaches of the west, north, and east of Puerto Rico, which remains in effect. The warning for operators of small vessels continues for offshore waters of the Atlantic.

A high-pressure system stretching across the southwest Atlantic, along with a diminishing low-pressure area in the northeast region, will maintain north to northwest winds until at least Tuesday. Additionally, this weather scenario will limit rainfall activity across the region until Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, the day is expected to remain mostly dry. However, on Saturday, a cold front located in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean will move towards the region.

Residents and beachgoers are advised to exercise caution and stay updated with weather advisories. Small vessel operators should adhere to safety guidelines, and individuals planning beach activities should be aware of the potential risks associated with threatening marine currents.

This legislation proposes a mandatory requirement for all hotels, guest houses, and short-term rental units, including those operating on platforms like Airbnb, located in beach areas to display prominent signs elucidating the flag system denoting maritime conditions for bathers.

The proposed bill represents a proactive effort by the government to enhance the safety and well-being of beachgoers, tourists, and residents alike. By ensuring that visitors are adequately informed about sea conditions, it aims to mitigate risks and promote responsible beach activities.

Under the provisions of the bill, establishments falling under the aforementioned categories will be obligated to prominently display signage detailing the significance of the flag system. According to data from TravelClick, Keydata, and Forward Keys examined by Discover Puerto Rico as of January 22, bookings for Puerto Rico in the first quarter of this year are 27% higher than in 2023.

14% more hotels have been booked, and 34% more short-term rentals. For the second quarter, there is a similar upward trend anticipated, with a 27% increase in hotel bookings.

In 2023, the industry improved across all major indicators for the third year, Discover Puerto Rico stated.

In the style of the “Icon Park” in Orlando, or the “High Roller” in Las Vegas, but on a smaller scale, the community of Puerta de Tierra, in San Juan, will be the venue of a new entertainment center with a 110-foot-high ferris wheel.

Besides the Ferris wheel, The Wheel complex will include such attractions as a warehouse-style food court with food truck-style eateries, a central bar and an upper-level multi-use entertainment center.

The culinary offerings at The Wheel will range from classic favorites like pizza and tacos to exotic options such as live fire Argentinian-style grilling, the owners said.

A Beer Garden will open in April 2024. It will be operated by The Semilla Group, which owns KÁNE, Semilla Kitchen & Bar, Vine, and Sablee in San Juan. Besides beers, it will serve wine and German-style food. Siete Santos will offer Neapolitan-style pizza.

Other features include an ice cream truck and stands for popcorn, churros, cotton candy and more.
