Exploring vibrant coral reefs, I encountered a mesmerizing array of tropical fish while scuba diving. The vivid colors of parrotfish, the graceful movements of angelfish, and the intricate patterns of butterflyfish created an underwater symphony of marine life. Just missed the sunset, but since the didn't close til 7:30pm today, we snapped the moon over the Berdiales lighthouse, which looks over the Puerto Ferro Bay on Vieques' south shore.

Today's Sightseeing Saturday keeps us in Isabel II with a stop at the Plaza de los Artesanos or the Artisan's Plaza, located catty-corner from the restaurants Mama Mia's and Casa Nativo. At random times during the low season and often weekly on Saturdays during the high season, you'll find local artisans and food crafters selling handmade gourd-art, jewelry, homemade bread or locally grown greens, fruits and honey at this little square. Regardless if the artisans are there, the plaza merits a stop just to admire the nature inspired art and see at a large scale a few of the animals who make Vieques their home.

The plaza was painted by muralist Carlos Gil Rivera and supported by Master Paints PR's Pinta Su Mejor Cara (Paint Your Best Face) program. You'll find Gil's artwork around many spots in Vieques, but this is a great spot to start your mural scavenger hunt!

Happy Fun Fact Friday! 🐚 The Helmet Shell!
This gastropod ("stomach - foot") is a large sea snail found along the west Atlantic coasts from North Carolina to Brazil. It dines at nighttime on sea urchins and sand dollars, a benefit for snorkelers - less sea urchins means less chance to have their spines pierce our hands and feet! To actually get at the meat of the sea urchin, the Helmet extends its proboscis (an extendable, flexible, straw-like organ) waaaaay outside its shell and drips sulfuric acid to pe*****te the sea urchin's shell. This way, the helmet's soft body stays out of reach of the long spines, until the sea urchin is immobilized! It kinda reminds me of Ridley Scott's Aliens, only much prettier!

Sea shells are home to many creatures after the snail dies, so if you find one while exploring the shorelines, be sure to leave it for the hermit crabs, octopus and fish that will use the shell for protection from larger predators. And if you are wondering what it is that you are looking at, stop by our shop before heading out for marine identification cards to help you learn about the amazing life you discover on your visit to Vieques!

At its simplest, a snorkel is a tube that lets a ninja breathe while underwater. But a papyrus reed won't get the job done when it's time to take amazing pictures of the coral reef! On the way to the beach, stop by our shop to check out all the technological innovations to the simple reed.
