47SOUL - 17/7/2018

47SOUL is an Electro Arabic Dabke (Shamstep) band formed in Amman Jordan in 2013. The members are rooted in Bilad Al-Sham, spanning the divides from Amman to the Galilee to Ramallah and the rest of the Palestinian Diaspora. This new sound of 47SOUL has rapidly amassed fans in the Arab World and Europe by blasting the electric Arabic Dabke sound through underground music scenes. On top of the beats that have been bumping in the Arab World for centuries, 47SOUL hypes it up with analog synthesizers, hypnotic guitar lines, and shattering verses from the four singers. Every show ends in relentless dance and trance from all parties involved. Their lyrics, mixing Arabic and English, call for celebration and freedom in the struggle for equality, inside Bilad Al Sham and throughout the world. The current lineup of 2016 includes: Z the People (vocals & synths) El Far3i (darouka, Mc/Vocals) Walaa Sbeit (percussion, Mc/vocals) El Jehaz (guitar & vocals).

Land Day, Yom al-Ard, March 30, is an annual day of commemoration for Palestinians of the events of that date in 1976. In response to the Israeli government's announcement of a plan to expropriate thousands of dunams of land for security and settlement purposes, a general strike and marches were organized in Arab towns from the Galilee to the Negev. In the ensuing confrontations with the Israeli army and police, six unarmed Arab citizens were killed, about one hundred were wounded, and hundreds of others arrested.

Scholarship on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict recognizes Land Day as a pivotal event in the struggle over land and in the relationship of Arab citizens to the Israeli state and body politic. It is significant in that it was the first time since 1948 that Arabs in Israel organized a response to Israeli policies as a Palestinian national collective. An important annual day of commemoration in the Palestinian national political calendar ever since, it is marked not only by Arab citizens of Israel, but also by Palestinians all over the world.

Al-Bireh is identified with ancient Beerot and was occupied during the Roman and Byzantine periods. The early medieval remains of Al-Bireh are identified with the village of Mahamoria. Remains from the Crusader and Ayyubid periods were found in the historic core of the town and include the Khan, a church, and a mosque. According to Christian tradition, Joseph and Mary rested in Al-Bireh on their way from Jerusalem to Galilee when they discovered that Jesus was missing. A crusader church, known as the church of the Holy Family, marks the spot where they stopped.

The road heading north from Jerusalem to Sabastiya is an ancient one. In the 12th century, in the Crusader period, it was controlled by the Knights of St. John. Later, during the Ottoman period in the 16th century, a khan was created on the road in Al-Bireh, adjacent to Ramallah, as a place for travelers to rest their animals, exchange valuable information on travel conditions, and spend a peaceful night in secure surroundings before continuing their journeys. The Khan gradually fell into ruins until 2014. A project funded by the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme), which restored parts of the building and created a museum for displays of artifacts to visitors.

Only 16 km from the holy city of Jerusalem, the city
