Romantic Friday Night Date!.....with Romeo⚓️🚤

What a weekend we had. And we definitely needed it. We have been going non-stop planning our summer season. Rico surprised me as we haven't had a date......well a night off kinda date....in a long time. It was a sleep over on a boat. Wow.....what an experience. The boat was docked, so we didn't actually sail anywhere. But what we did do, was start off with a bottle of Vinho Verde, followed by a walk in the Marina....then off to dinner. Headed back to the barcos for a night cap and star gazing. Off to bed we went. How comfy. How amazing. I felt like a queen. We felt like this one night off gave us the boost we needed.
Thank you Rico for a great night.
If anyone is interested in an overnight stay on a yacht, let me know.

Romeo the Portie is on the move today. He wanted to say Bom Dia to all is friends this fine sunny (but a little chilly) morning. We headed into the Old Town via the tunnel. You can never get tired of looking at the gorgeous murals painted along the way.

Sea & Milk....The perfect combination to start a Village!
Marmelete, Monchique.

What I find most interesting about the Algarve is the various towns with such beautiful history. This weekend we decided to just drive...Where? We had no idea. We ended up in a small village close to the Monchique Mountains. Marmelete.

The Legend:
The legend tells the story of a ship sailing along the nearby coastline being caught in a fierce storm which caused the ship to capsize. The captain and his crew managed to escape to the coast, saving eight goats and timber from the ship.

With what they had salvaged the captain and crew decided that they needed to find somewhere to shelter; eventually they came upon the area which is now the location of the village.

The men settled there building shelters using the materials they had salvaged from the ship. Every morning members of the community would travel back down the mountain to the sea to catch fish, whilst the other took care of the goats. Many of the men began relationships with the local girls and some married and started families. After several years the shacks and shelters built by the captain and crew became a village with proper dwellings and they had gathered a considerable amount of livestock.

The Captain however, did not settle into the monotonous life on land and longed to go back to the sea. One day the captain went to the port of Lagos and by chance met an old seafaring acquaintance. The man owned a ship and hearing about the captain's predicament, he offered him a position of captain, but he could not employ any of his old crew.

Since the captain could not take any of his old crew with him, he said goodbye to them with the following words:
"My friends, I leave you and do not know if I will ever return, but in my soul I'll keep this place and I name the village "Mar e Leite" (Sea and milk)".

"Meus amigos, deixo-vos e não sei se algum dia voltarei, mas na minha alma vou guardar este lugar e dou à vila o nome de "Mar e Leite".

Over time, the village name was modified until it became Marmelete.

History is a beautiful thing....we need to embrace it!

Can you get a Bifana in Arrifana? Hummm, I am not sure, but I can tell you what you will get......

A view that is like no other in the Algarve. Black rock cliffs stretch for miles along the ocean. A surfers paradise. In fact I think we saw about 100 surfers in the ocean at the same time trying to catch the wave. A definite must see! Put this on your list of places to visit when in Portugal.
And don't forget there are unique cafe's and restaurants that line the cobblestone streets.

What I find so interesting about so many places is the color of the Rock formations and the sand. Within a 45 minute drive of the different beaches you can see such a vivid change. Spectacular!

Valentines Day!
Other than celebrating by giving flowers or chocolate to one another, an important Portuguese Valentine's day tradition is the “Cantarinha dos Namorados”. The "valentine's gift" is made of clay, by the hands of potters.
Tradition has it that when a boy was willing to make the official marriage proposal, he first offered his girlfriend a little gift, made of clay.
The little gift also had the function of storing offerings from the bride's parents during the engagement.

Romantic? I think so.
So let's all celebrate the whole month of February with Love and Friendship...Another reason to eat chocolates and drink wine!

"If your looking for a sign this is it!"

Yep, we relocated. If anyone tells you it is easy....it has its challenges. But worth it? Yes!!!!
We traveled from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Distance: 7,654 KM.
We sold our house, our business and some of our belongings. We loaded a 40ft shipping container....35 days on the ocean and it made it. Including our furniture, Rico's motorcycle and our Jeep Wrangler. Rico came first to get us set up. He is originally from North Portugal, Viana Do Castelo, but has been living in Canada for 30 years. It wasn't easy spending 11 months apart. Loneliness set in for both of us. Face time was our only communication. A cold long winter in Edmonton, Canada compared to a mid winter in the Algarve was hard to watch.
Romeo and I arrived 6 months ago. 20 Hour flight, 12 Cups of Coffee, 7 glasses of vinho, 2 flight connections, 2.5 hour drive from Lisboa to Albufeira and we made it. Suitcases in hand. Tears flowed as we landed in a new place....a better place? Unknown! Romeo may be a Portuguese water dog, but we don't speak the language (Rico is fluent) and we are unfamiliar with the lay of the land. But with time and patience we are happier than we have even been. How can you not be!

It was the best decision our little family made.
If you're thinking of taking the plunge, don't think twice...cause if you don't, you might be missing out on something amazing.
Our friends & family were behind us all the way.

We are thankful to all the friendships we have already made. Some amazing people that made us feel so welcome. You know who you are!

So, if your thinking about a move....don't think much further. Consider this your sign. We did it! We made it! We are happier than we ever were. The Portuguese lifestyle is exactly what this family needed.

Thank you Portugal for your hospitality, your kindness and your beautiful country. We are forever thankful for this life!

A café can be found on every cobblestone corner....sometimes two.
No time for rushing. Cafe Culture plays one of the most important roles in Portugal.

The Portuguese consume the highest amount of wine in the world.
Yep, its true. An average consumption of 72 bottles of wine per person per year, that is equivalent to 56 liters. Ching Ching! And with wines priced between 2€ and 10€, (being a great bottle), how can you afford not too. From vinho branco to vinho tinto, to Vinho Verde! And lets not even get started with the fact that Portugal is the largest producer of cork in the world. Of course they are! They bottle it, they cork it and they drink it.

Smarty Pants.....Fun Facts.....

The Portuguese water dog is stunningly smart.

Originated from the Algarve region of Portugal, the breed expanded to all around Portugal's coast, where they were taught to herd fish into fishermen's nets, retrieve lost tackle or broken nets, and act as couriers from ship to ship, or ship to shore.

The Traditional Lion Cut. Why? Because the lion cut diminished the initial shock of cold water when jumping from boats, as well as provides warmth to the vitals. The hindquarters were left shaved to allow easier movement of the back legs and the powerful tail.

And without further ado......We would like to introduce our Portie, Romeo! Born and raised in Edmonton, Canada by Baywood Dogs, Romeo has made his way back to his Motherland. He wanted to say Woof to you all.
We frequent Gale Beach and Old Town Albufeira. Romeo has made a few appearances onboard our Tours......Woof Woof!

"Roll out the Barrel.....we had a barrel of fun"
What a way to spend the day....
First stop Quinta do Francês Winery. A Family Estate; 9 hectares of vineyard; nested in the hills of Silves. Site seeing along the way was filled with Eucalyptus Trees....imagine the smell when you roll down the window...Amazing!!!
Next Stop.....Monchique. High up in the mountains you will find hot sulfur springs, with baths and health spas. Eucalyptus, cork oak, oranges, lemons, honey, olive oil, chestnuts, black pork sausages. You name it! You find it! And lets not forget the infamous medronho! A local brew made from distilled medronho berries....for me, it was a little strong. However, everyone seemed to really kick it up after a shot or two!
Last Stop - Lunch....so authentic. So traditional. O Tasco. If heading up to Monchique highly recommend stopping in. You won't be disappointed. (And they serve a 1/2 Liter of wine with every meal).🍷😀
Oh wait.....one more thing....Sheep...Sheepies....always see Sheepies wherever we go! 🐑

Imagine.....Kissing your wife good-bye and heading out on your ole bike; to the cliffs; where you set up your fishing gear for the day. You spend the day dropping your hook into the rough, blue ocean which is over 200 ft below. You gather with your Amigos for an afternoon packed lunch and a few laughs. At the end of a long day you head back on your bike to sell your catch. This is a way of life that is loved by so many. When visiting the Algarve, head up to Sagres - The End of the World and see for yourself.

"who sells seashells by the seashore?"
The most quaint little gems are found down the ole' Portuguese cobblestone streets. A great place we discovered with friends in Albufeira. Portas Da Vila Bar...also knows as the Seashell Bar. The Shells were hand picked along the seashore by the owner. A great place to meet up, hang out and really take in that Portuguese fun culture. It has been a blast finding new haunts along the streets.

Jump on-board!! So many amazing things to see and do in this beautiful country. We have been exploring so many local towns, landmarks, beaches and of course devouring Portuguese Cuisine. I have to say one of the best things about the Algarve is the beauty at any given time or moment. From a sun filled costal drive, to the rolling fog filled Forts and Castles. All in one day!!
