Romantic Friday Night Date!.....with Romeo⚓️🚤

What a weekend we had. And we definitely needed it. We have been going non-stop planning our summer season. Rico surprised me as we haven't had a date......well a night off kinda date....in a long time. It was a sleep over on a boat. Wow.....what an experience. The boat was docked, so we didn't actually sail anywhere. But what we did do, was start off with a bottle of Vinho Verde, followed by a walk in the Marina....then off to dinner. Headed back to the barcos for a night cap and star gazing. Off to bed we went. How comfy. How amazing. I felt like a queen. We felt like this one night off gave us the boost we needed.
Thank you Rico for a great night.

Romeo the Portie is on the move today. He wanted to say Bom Dia to all is friends this fine sunny (but a little chilly) morning. We headed into the Old Town via the tunnel. You can never get tired of looking at the gorgeous murals painted along the way.

Sea & Milk....The perfect combination to start a Village!
Marmelete, Monchique.

What I find most interesting about the Algarve is the various towns with such beautiful history. This weekend we decided to just drive...Where? We had no idea. We ended up in a small village close to the Monchique Mountains. Marmelete.

The Legend:
The legend tells the story of a ship sailing along the nearby coastline being caught in a fierce storm which caused the ship to capsize. The captain and his crew managed to escape to the coast, saving eight goats and timber from the ship.

With what they had salvaged the captain and crew decided that they needed to find somewhere to shelter; eventually they came upon the area which is now the location of the village.

The men settled there building shelters using the materials they had salvaged from the ship. Every morning members of the community would travel back down the mountain to the sea to catch fish, whilst the other took care of the goats. Many of the men began relationships with the local girls and some married and started families. After several years the shacks and shelters built by the captain and crew became a village with proper dwellings and they had gathered a considerable amount of livestock.

The Captain however, did not settle into the monotonous life on land and longed to go back to the sea. One day the captain went to the port of Lagos and by chance met an old seafaring acquaintance. The man owned a ship and hearing about the captain's predicament, he offered him a position of captain, but he could not employ any of his old crew.

Since the captain could not take any of his old crew with him, he said goodbye to them with the following words:
"My friends, I leave you and do not know if I will ever return, but in my soul I'll keep this place and I name the village "Mar e Leite" (Sea and milk)".

"Meus amigos, deixo-vos e não sei se algum dia voltarei, mas na minha alma vou guardar este lugar e dou à vila o nome de "Mar e Leite".

Over time, the village name was modified until it became Marmelete.

History is a beautiful thing....we need to embrace it!

Can you get a Bifana in Arrifana? Hummm, I am not sure, but I can tell you what you will get......

A view that is like no other in the Algarve. Black rock cliffs stretch for miles along the ocean. A surfers paradise. In fact I think we saw about 100 surfers in the ocean at the same time trying to catch the wave. A definite must see! Put this on your list of places to visit when in Portugal.
And don't forget there are unique cafe's and restaurants that line the cobblestone streets.

What I find so interesting about so many places is the color of the Rock formations and the sand. Within a 45 minute drive of the different beaches you can see such a vivid change. Spectacular!

Why only celebrate February 14, let's celebrate the entire month.

Valentines Day!
Other than celebrating by giving flowers or chocolate to one another, an important Portuguese Valentine's day tradition is the “Cantarinha dos Namorados”. The "valentine's gift" is made of clay, by the hands of potters.
Tradition has it that when a boy was willing to make the official marriage proposal, he first offered his girlfriend a little gift, made of clay.
The little gift also had the function of storing offerings from the bride's parents during the engagement.

Romantic? I think so.
So let's all celebrate the whole month of February with Love and Friendship...Another reason to eat chocolates and drink wine!
