PORTUGUESE SWOP ALGARVE FOR ABROAD: HOLIDAYS IN THE SOUTH ARE MORE EXPENSIVE THAN TAKING A PLANE ABROAD

The Portuguese are swapping the Algarve for abroad because it is cheaper to go on holiday there. Even so, occupancy rates at Portugal's biggest beach destination remain very high
After 2023 was known as the best year ever for tourism in the country, the Portuguese Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies recorded a rush to travel at the beginning of the year with demand above last year.

616 thousand national tourists were responsible for almost 2.5 million overnight stays in traditional hotels. This was a drop of over 10% compared to 2022. This year, it could be even greater.

The Algarve has an occupancy rate of over 90%, but most visitors to the south of the country are now foreigners. Prices have been rising since the pandemic and it is now more expensive for a Portuguese to go down to the Algarve beaches than to catch a plane out of the country.

The average price per night has risen by around 10% compared to 2023 and more people are now paying in tourist tax. As a result, British, French, Irish and Germans are dominating bookings and there has been a big increase in visits from North America.

According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), between January and March, trips by Portuguese people within their own country fell by 10%.

On the other hand, trips abroad grew by almost the same amount: 9.2%.

The president of APAVT says that the most popular destinations for Portuguese people are the Caribbean, Cape Verde, Tunisia, Italy and the Spanish islands . He explains that the promotions and the various attractive charter offers contribute to this trend of increasing trips abroad and decreasing those within the country.

Last year, tourism generated almost thirty-four billion euros for the country. Portugal was the second country in Europe in which tourism had the greatest impact on the economy, surpassed only by Iceland.
