When the walk starts off with the tracks all ankle deep in water, you know it'll be interesting... Great scenery, amazing vegetation and colours, and a random Roman-looking road that suddenly appeared on the track...

Sunday started off a bit misty and murky, but it started lifting quite soon into the walk. By the time we made it to the village for a drink, it was a lovely, sunny day, with great views of the castle over the border. We found some bats using the old mill house, and finished off strolling up the river valley...

Walked around the lovely village of Monsanto, up to the castle, and around the back through the boulders... Great views in all directions, and Spain in the distance is a reminder of why the castle was built here...

We found a lovely reserve to walk through near the beach.. Had a great bird hide, and a boardwalk to the beach.

Time for some town walking.... Had a day walking round Guarda, highest city in Portugal. Interesting place, amazing views from the castle and the tower.
It is known as the "city of the five F's": Farta, Forte, Fria, Fiel e Formosa - abundant, strong, cold, loyal and beautiful.

We found this beautiful striped hawkmoth.... so lovely! Who says moths aren't as pretty as butterflies..?!

We haven't been to the beach since the start of the lockdowns, so it was fabulous to be back. Even better was the state of the beaches - people have been cleaning them up and there has been no-one littering them - they are pristine and natural (as they should be)!

Took a dog walk around a different village - one we usually drive through. You really do get to see so much more detail when you are walking, and have time to stop and peek into gardens!!

Our Story

Britstad is a small, family-run operation based in the Fundão/ Idanha-a-Nova region of central Portugal. It is run by us, Darren Brito and Jill Titlestad, and we both studied and worked for many years as wildlife rangers in the UK. We moved to Portugal in 2016 to enjoy a more simple and sustainable lifestyle, as well as the tranquillity and wildlife that this region of Portugal has to offer.

Walking is a great way to explore an area, and to really understand how it fits together. We, along with Geo, the dog, have spent many days exploring and getting to know the paths, tracks and wildlife that we encounter along the way. We are always researching and learning about what we find, and seeing new things as nature and wildlife are never still. We are both interested in finding out about the history of the area, and how humans have interacted with the landscape, and influenced what is around us. There is a rich history in this area, stretching from Neolithic man and the Romans, to the Knights Templar and modern mankind, and we try to bring this to life for you.

We both want to share our knowledge and experiences, and also learn from other people. Everyone knows something interesting, and the exchange of knowledge and information that happens on a walk is an enjoyable part of the experience for us as well.
