Get Lost Go Local

Get Lost Go Local Explore the city as a Lisboan, do what locals do and have a genuine experience in Lisbon. http://getlostgolocal.wordpress.com I was big in Hong-Kong!

Get Lost, Go local was founded 2012, after helping two Hong-Kong journalists discovering the secret hidden spots of Lisbon. I showed them the places, the views, local food, history, nightlife, trends and told them who we are as Lisboans. Results came some months later in a weekly magazine… wow!!! The article about Lisbon was a great work with excellent photos about our beautiful city. I started re

ceiving emails with requests to provide walking tours in a few weeks... the rest of the story you know already! Get Lost, Go Local is not a normal walking tour company, it's more a concept. It's how you travel and discover the city through the eyes of a local. I believe this is the best way of experience the local culture. Take a tour with a local person as your guide, and discover all the hidden secret spots of Lisbon.

It’s so hot that my head just popped… 🥵🥵🥵 Some towns in Alentejo / Ribatejo region just reached 46•c (Mora close to Évora with 46.6•c). Although the record was reached in Amareleja with over 47•c in 2003, the day is not over yet and maybe more records will be broken…

Surviving the heat wave in Portugal like a pro:🏆 🥵

Surviving a heat wave requires preparation. There’s no Air Con on roughly 80% of all Portuguese apartments, windows are old, glass is thin and when it’s hot outside, it’s hot inside (while in the winter when it will be freezing inside too, but that’s another story 😩). You want trees nearby, but the nearest one is a good walk from home, hence there’s no shade in the surroundings (unless your building is facing the North, and that means you’re a spoiled privileged already). Energy is very expensive in Portugal and besides the lack of proper insulation in buildings, there’s no budget to buy an air con (and no money left to turn it on). The next heat wave could be historical as temperatures will rise and top 105-110F (way over 40•c which is a lot when you are close to the coast in Lisbon or Porto). How can we survive this?

1) Open every window once the sun goes down to create that air cross breeze. Luckily you have windows in opposite sides of your house and that will do the trick. If you’re not living in the ground floor, keep the windows open all night. No one will sleep anyways, so the noise will be the least of your problems. 🪟

2) Prepare for the next morning. You’ll wake up in a spaceship 🚀 towards Mercury and it will be bad, really bad. You need to close everything once the sun is down (unless you want the fry eggs 🍳 on your kitchen counter) and your house will look inhabited for the whole day. Your neighbours will think you’re out on vacations. Keep all windows down and all estores / persianas aka blinds down. You are not allowed to let the sun inside. As a vampire 🧛‍♀️ your apartment will be dark as a tomb.

3) Drink water, take a bath, drink water, take a bath, eat something light (watermelon or a fresh queijo fresco with some cherry tomatoes), drink water again. 💦 🛀

4) if you go out, dress white light clothes. Wear a hat 🧢 walk under the shade. Avoid going out between 11 and 4pm unless strictly necessary. I won’t recommend you to walk on Portuguese cobblestones while it’s hot. Your fancy all stars will melt and you will sweat like a pig 🐷 on a churrasco.

5) Consider a sesta. Stay safe 🙌

The pearls of a country that is killing anything local and authentic for the easy profit gentrification. I’m almost sure if I ever return to this place in a few years, there will be airbnbs in the old fishermen houses, a burger - kebab sh*tty place in the other end, a few coffee-cowork places for the rich emigrants (aka expats), maybe a kiosk with imported beer and the very Portuguese piña colada served inside… a pineapple. And the world turns and im feeling old and I wish I could have more time.
The next generation of spoiled “influencers” won’t have the tiniest clue about how it was to wake up in the middle of the night to spend a few hours in a horrible cold water to have something at the end of the day. What a life our grandparents had and what the hell happened…

Horseball, a recent sport (originally from France) but with roots in the Argentinian sport Pato, is played in Portugal since the 90’s. The match is fast and it consists of 2 teams with 4 players each, trying to throw a ball through a hoop. The players has to pass the ball at least 3 times before scoring. As with all equestrian activities and despite rules and safety measures, Horseball is a high risk sport. It was my first time at a Horseball ground, and I might go back, specially because our family loves horses. What impressed me more was the raiders control over the horses, absolutely stunning. 🐴

Things you would never know about Estoril back in the 40’s, the exile of kings and wealthy families of Europe, a nest of spies and obviously home to the famous… 007. Unfortunately bad acting (arguably the worst James Bond, played by Australian actor George Lazenby) was filmed partially in Portugal, showing some parts of a very charming and almost unknown Cascais and Estoril. The movie was clearly a fiasco, and that kept this area relatively quiet until the 1st tourism boom of the 90’s. Working in the Tourism Bureau of Estoril helped me knowing this area as a local and the old stories were absolutely from a spy movie. The old noble life of these wealthy families could easily be featured in books and tales and were obviously an inspiration to any writer. The Sud Express Train, clandestine Casinos and old bars, spies, wealthy and noble families, traitors and refugees of wars and spies. Perfect ingredients for scandals and intrigue. #007

One of my favourite cities, always alive and beautiful in every small art deco tiled house and small details in the old buildings. Love coming back here, would love to stay longer. This is the perfect place to watch the storm passing by.

This is definitely one of my favourite buildings, fortunately in the wrong side of town, neglected but still in one piece, surviving the sadness tsunami of gentrification. Tourists won’t find this one, locals won’t pay attention to its beauty details. It’s just a building…

Lisbon, California. In a crazy world, be a lunatic - there are no tariffs for the craziest ones. Curious if Trump would claim this bridge as part of the American Empire. It was built by an American company… it makes sense, right? 🤦‍♂️🫣

Merry Xmas dear friends. All the best for you and your family. Last day in Lisbon I spotted a crow in this beautiful street at Graça. It’s a sign, I thought. The crows were the protectors of Saint Vincent and they become one of the beloved symbols of Lisbon. I’m 49 and I never saw one crow in Lisbon in my entire life. Merry Xmas - wish you the best year of your life, hopefully in peace. —————————— #Λισαβόνα #Лиссабо́н #リス #里斯本 #里斯本
