Wondering what to do in 2023? Here's some news to use...

RYANAIR ANNOUNCES NEW ROUTES TO AND FROM PORTO AND FARO 2023

Ryanair announced this Wednesday the opening next summer of 18 new routes in Portugal, Porto and Faro. In a statement, the airline released seven new routes to Faro and 11 to Porto.

The company said it will add two aircraft in Porto and Faro “from the summer of 2023”, representing an additional investment of 400 million euros in Portugal and the creation of 120 new local jobs.

"This growth in Porto and Faro is a direct result of the intervention of the ANAC (National Civil Aviation Authority) that forced ANA (Portugal Airports) to reduce airport taxes in Porto and Faro next year".

The Irish airline regretted that the regulator "was not able to persuade ANA to lower fees at other airports" and, therefore, "there will be no additional growth in Lisbon, Madeira and the Azores" in 2023.

From Porto, new routes emerge to Bristol, Leeds (England), Castellon (Spain), Maastricht (Netherlands), Nimes, Strasbourg (France), Shannon (Ireland), Stockholm (Sweden), Trapani, Turin (Italy) and Wroclaw (Poland).

From Faro, Ryanair will also fly to Aarhus (Denmark), Belfast (Northern Ireland), Exeter (England), Frankfurt Hahn (Germany), Rome Fiumicino (Italy), Toulouse (France) and Barcelona (Spain).

RIP CURRENTS AND WHAT TO DO IF YOU GET CAUGHT IN ONE

Every year people get into difficulties whilst swimming and this can be a result of getting caught in a rip current potentially leading to drowning. Currently ahead of the Bathing seasons lifeguards are not stationed on most beaches so you need to know how to recognise rip currents and if you get caught in one, what act to take.

WHAT IS IT?
A rip current is a narrow, fast-moving channel of water that starts near the beach and extends offshore through the line of breaking waves.

RECOGNISING A RIP CURRENT
Spotting a rip current can be difficult, and really needs some practice. But when you go to the beach, start off by staying back from the water. Rip currents are easier to see at an elevated position, like a dune line or beach access, and then look for places where waves aren’t breaking, so flat spots in the line of breaking waves. And then also where there’s maybe foam or sediment in the water being transported away from the beach offshore.

Rip currents can occur anywhere you have breaking waves, like large sandy beaches on the open ocean. But they can also occur where you have hard structures, like jetties, or piers, or even rocks jutting out into the ocean.

ACTION TO TAKE
If you do get caught in a rip current, the best thing you can do is stay calm. It’s not going to pull you underwater, it’s just going to pull you away from shore. Call and wave for help. You want to float, and you don’t want to swim back to shore against the rip current because it will just tire you out. You want to swim out of the rip, parallel to shore, along the beach and then follow breaking waves back to shore at an angle.

The west coast tends to be more hazardous due to the powerful Atlantic Ocean. Surfers and wind-surfers like this coast for its conditions and near-perfect waves, but obviously the wilder water presents a greater risk. Extra caution should be used if you plan on swimming or participating in water sports on the west coast. It is important to monitor weather warnings in these areas
