🇬🇧 In Portugal, it is common to hear the expression “Vai chatear o Camões!” (go bother Camões!). This typical phrase, used to send someone away or simply to say we don’t want to be bothered, originally traces back to an amusing story from Lisbon. Luís Vaz de Camões, one of Portugal’s greatest poets, has a statue in his honour in the heart of the city, in the square bearing his name. And, in the past, when passing by the square, the more intoxicated individuals - perhaps inspired by wine or the grandeur of Os Lusíadas - would stop and “talk“ to the poet. 🗣️ From these unusual scenes came the expression. If Camões could “endure“ endless conversations with the most persistent, why not send an annoying person to “bother“ the poet instead of us? Today, the expression is part of the Portuguese vocabulary, used as a light-hearted and good-natured way of dealing with annoying situations. 🇵🇹 Em Portugal, é comum ouvirmos a expressão “Vai chatear o Camões!”. Locução típica usada para afastar alguém ou simplesmente dizer que não queremos ser incomodados, a sua origem remonta a uma curiosa história lisboeta. Luís Vaz de Camões, um dos maiores poetas portugueses tem erguida, no coração da cidade, na Praça com o mesmo nome, uma estátua em sua honra. E, reza a história, antigamente ao passar pela praça, os mais ébrios - inspirados, talvez, pelo vinho ou pela grandiosidade d’“Os Lusíadas“ - ficavam a “conversar“ com o poeta. 🗣️ Dessas cenas insólitas nasceu a expressão. Isto porque, se Camões “aguenta” conversas intermináveis com os mais insistentes, por que não mandar alguém aborrecido “chatear” o poeta em vez de nós? 🇬🇧 There are many places to visit in Portugal in November which, while stunning all year round, become magical during this season. The village of Luso and the Buçaco Mountain, in the municipality of Mealhada, are among these places. The Buçaco National Forest, spanning 105 hectares, with vast biodiversity and rich architectural and cultural heritage, became the first therapeutic forest in the Iberian Peninsula this year. The Buçaco Palace Hotel — a neo-Manueline palace from the 19th century, now a charming hotel — has gardens with hidden corners worth getting lost in, such as the Valley of Ferns, Santa Teresa Waterfall, the Santa Cruz Convent, and the Sacromonte, both dating back to the 17th century. 🍂🏡 In the village centre, you can drink water directly from the São João Fountain and taste one of the excellent wines from the Bairrada region, which hold Protected Designation of Origin status. 🥂 🇵🇹 Há muitos lugares para visitar em Novembro em Portugal que, sendo incríveis todo o ano, tornam-se mágicos nesta estação, e a vila do Luso e a Serra do Buçaco, no município da Mealhada, são um desses lugares. Maria, daughter of King Manuel, it stands out as one of the first buildings in the country to adopt this style. Today, it is the resting place of some of the most important figures in Portuguese history. Its transformation into a pantheon in 1916 reinforced the patriotic significance of the building, consolidating it as a place of memory and homage. The grandiose dome and elaborate ornamentation reinforce the vastness and beauty of this building. The square, centralized floor plan is a testament to the innovation and splendour of the Baroque period in Portugal. 🇬🇧 The first references to the “Bonecos de Estremoz” (Estremoz dolls) date back to the early 18th century when, in 1770, it was known that the “boniqueiras,“ women who made clay figures, practiced an unrecognized craft. It is believed that this tradition likely began from the spiritual need to have at home a saint of one‘s devotion - when purchasing them carved in wood was impossible - It is supposed that a woman, accustomed to working with clay, dared to model for the first time a small saint of her devotion, and from this, the tradition was born in a land where clay was abundant. With more than a hundred different figures cataloged, new themes are invented every day, always related to the daily lives of the Alentejo people in their rural and urban experiences. 🏺🎨🧑‍ 🇵🇹 As primeiras referências aos Bonecos de Estremoz remontam ao princípio do séc. XVIII quando, em 1770, se soube da existência das “boniqueiras”, mulheres que faziam figuras de barro, enquanto ofício não reconhecido. Provavelmente com início na necessidade espiritual de querer ter em casa o santo de sua devoção - quando comprá-los em talha era impossível - supõe-se que uma mulher habituada a lidar com o barro se terá atrevido a modelar pela primeira vez um santinho da sua devoção e daqui terá nascido a tradição, numa terra onde o barro era abundante.
