We believe that our work is far more than a source of income and are committed to the ocean and all its marine biodiversity. Situated in the marina of Calheta at the south-western coast, Lobosonda offers daily several 2-3 hour trips on small boats. Established in 2003 as a family buisness, it has excellent field experience and is a pioneer in the Whale Watching sector. One of the companys main pri

nciple is summarised in the guideline: "We are the guests out there". Emphazising that no animals should harassed or harmed is fundamental for the daily work.

Our Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) were busy catching their sashimi breakfast today. While the dolphins and the Cory’s shearwaters had the advantage, Flying fish had to give up their lives. That's part of nature. Flying fish, also known as Exocoetidae, are fascinating sea creatures that are impressive due to their unusual ability to glide distances through the air. These fish have specially developed, wing-like pectoral fins that allow them to leave the water and glide over the surface to escape predators....

Today's sightings were breathtaking, including Short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus), Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and Rough-toothed dolphins (Steno bredanensis). The morning was particularly interesting, as it demonstrated ways of human impact on the oceans. The boats set off in calm seas, our guests were in excellent and excited mood. We passed a fishing boat and made a brief stop as the fishermen were just pulling in the lines....

An interesting sighting. On both our morning and afternoon tours (09:30 and 17:00), we saw short-finned pilot whales (Globicephela macrorhynchus), and on both tours, we noticed the family group was joined by an interesting stranger—one singular bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus). It is not uncommon to see Bottlenoses associating with other species. Over the last months, I've seen bottlenose following, swimming with or just being suspiciously close to Common (...

WOW! Five species on one trip! So it went in quick succession today. We started with Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis), then S***m whales (Physeter macrocephalus), followed by Short-finned Pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) and a Bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and then Rough-toothed dolphins (Steno bredanensis). So today we had three species whose social structure is a hierarchy and two species that live in a matriarchy....

This morning couldn't have started any better for me. After calling the spotter on land, the captain ment "There are pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) only a few nautical miles off the shore". One of my, if not THE favourite cetacean I could encounter in the blue. Short-finned pilot whales are in fact marine dolphins (Delphinidae), but owe their name to their sheer size of maximum 7 meters in length....

If you've been on one of my tours and heard my opinion on the use of phrases like "ocean super highway" rather than Gulf Stream or referring to a sea turtle's pelagic phase as its "lost years," you'll know this blog is unlikely to be about the United States. Today's blog was inspired by a young guest who today asked me about the true difference between Atlantic spotted (...

In Cetology there are plenty of old-timey words. But if there's one word that makes me feel the most like an ancient mariner, it's the one I used at 14:00 today: grampus. This old phrase used to be used occasionally for Orca (Orcinus orca), but as time progressed, it was used exclusively for one species, Rissos dolphins (...

It's a strange feeling at the moment, going out to sea, which is a bit gloomy and covered in smoke from the fire. Despite the difficult conditions, our spotter found S***m whales (Physeter macrocephalus). On the way there, we had a brief contact with Blainville's beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris) who swam across our path. They dared to approach closely. The S***m whales were active....

It is only since May this year that I can call Madeira my home. Some people may call me a nomad, as I have been constantly changing homes since about 11 years now. Over these years I roamed through Latin America, Antarctica, and drifted eventually towards Portuguese Islands. As long as there is ocean and marine life around me, life is good....

The last few days have been difficult for the island of Madeira. The wildfire mentioned in my last blog has continued to burn and likely will do so for the next few days. Madeira lies on a similar latitude to California, an area where wildfires are common, well researched, but none the less terrifying for conservationists. It is understood that uncontrolled wildfires pose a huge threat to land-based biodiversity....

We often see Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) on our tours, as we did this morning. This species is one of the most widespread dolphin species in the world. It lives in warm and temperate waters in both coastal areas and open seas. It is particularly common in the coastal regions of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans. In Europe, the bottlenose dolphin is common in the North Sea and the Mediterranean....

Currently there is an elephant out on the Atlantic. On every tour, it is unavoidable to notice the redness of the cloud cover, the ash in the water, the obscured hazy views if one looks towards Funchal. Since yesterday (Wednesday the 14th), a fire has been burning in the forest around Serra de Agua. On the night it began, I had taken a trip to watch/listen to Zinos petrels (...

The band the Stranglers once asked, "Whatever happened to all of the heroes?" It seems to be a trend in modern times that public figures are increasingly controversial; it has become difficult to truly support anyone's work. This is truly an issue in the natural science world. As science and society evolve and change, it is unsurprising that many former heroes hold views that are, rightly, no longer acceptable....

At midday we had cuddly Rough-toothed dolphins (Steno bredanensis) on the Stenella. Afterwards we encountered a school of Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis). They were behaving unusually cautiously. Considering that they had tiny calves in their midst and are confronted with many boat contacts every day, this shows responsible behaviour on the part of the mothers. Their calves need rest periods so that they do not consume more energy than they get from their mother's milk....

Endorphine, is a hormone, which is real happiness booster. En-dolphins are the highest increase in happiness. On our morning tour, our guests were more than spoilt by our marine friends. Sighting after sighting, each one beautiful and magical in its own special way. Blainville's beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris), who forgot they were actually shy and danced gracefully around the boat; Rough-toothed dolphins (Steno bredanensis) in cuddle mode; Risso's dolphins (Grampus griseus), who came very close to us by their standards and our sweet, interactive Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis)....

Most of today's sky was covered in clouds. Although you might have hoped for sunshine during your tour, an overcast day can be quite a relief. Jonah is an old nautical term used often in whaling times. Based off of the biblical story of the man famously swallowed whole by a whale, to describe someone as a Jonah simply means they are cursed. Specifically, this bad luck would present itself in a simple way: a Jonah makes the whales go away. In the modern world, whale hunting is absolutely non-condonable; it is archaic and cruel....

On our tours, we can observe dolphins in their natural habitat. Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) , like the ones we saw this morning, are among the best known of the marine mammals, as they are often kept in captivity. However, dolphins definitely do not belong in dolphinaria! Their natural living conditions cannot be adequately replicated in captivity. In the wild, dolphins travel long distances every day, dive deep and live in complex social structures....

I find it fascinating how unique every single whale and dolphin species is. Until now, we know that there exist at least 90 different species of cetaceans in our worlds' oceans. Every one of them surprises with amazing adaptations to their environment in the diverse habitats they live in, including incredible feeding strategies and diving capabilities. Almost one third of all known cetaceans have already been documented in Madeira....

Don't get me wrong I love Cetaceans but for me the perfect tour is 50/50. 50 percent Cetaceans 50 percent other life (Sea Turtles (Carreta carreta), sea birds and sharks). You always experience something new at sea. Today there was an unusual combination of two dolphin species. I saw this for the first time in 19.5 years as a whale watching guide. The Risso dolphin (Grampus griseus) is an extremely impressive marine species. These animals are characterised by their robust body and characteristic rounded head. Adults reach a length of up to four metres and can weigh up to 500 kilograms....

With absolutely stunning flat seas we started our morning tours, allowing our passengers to observe the encountered dolphins up closely. It seemed like the Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) were observing us on the boat as well, constantly turning onto their sides with wide opened eyes. Ever heard of a Ruddy Turnstone (Arenaria interpres)? Rola do mar in Portuguese. A name that means turtledove of the sea and a name I find simply gorgeous. These stunning waders have gently marbled reddish plumage and bright orange/red legs. They are usual winter visitors to Madeiran shores but also occasionally appear as vagrants here in the summer. Appearing on rocky shorelines such as that of Calheta....

A common question: which is the best boat? On days like today I get to find out working both Riberia Brava and Stenella in the same day. If you ask the desk crew, the difference between the boats is simple: fast and slow. Put in numbers, it's the difference of a few 100 horsepower (or a journey at somewhere around 6 knots versus 20 knots)....

Our Story

We stand for Water, Whales, Whale Watching, Whale conservation, Wellness and for Welcome. Lobosonda is a whale watching company respectful of all marine biodiversity operating in Madeira since 2003.

We believe that our work is far more than a source of income and are committed to the Ocean and all its marine biodiversity. As a thank you for all the beautiful sightings of marine mammals, we had over the past years, the Lobosonda team works with heart and soul daily on ocean issues and its protection.

We will take you into the “blue office” a beautiful and sensitive workplace. In the Ocean there are also laws that apply, the most important one: respect! Each species has a different character, varies their behaviour and the daily condition of the animals also plays a role on each sighting. Therefore we cannot guarantee sightings on every sailing but, our team does their best daily. Each sailing is different and unique, a good and respectful team work translates itself on the success rate of our sightings.

The coming together of people and marine mammals is special and should remain special. It is our mission and responsibility under the existing rules to make encounters with marine mammals that do not harm them in any way so its our focus daily to get this right.
