Moving on to the next phase, the choice of materials. With this drawing of Célula it all becomes very real.

We're thinking cork, pink tiles, gold, wooden windows, handmade roof tiles, colored windows, see through curtains

Nearly a year after our permit submission : WE GOT IT !

And it seems official instances like it as there is NO changes to be done !

Next step is to submit the technical plans so we're now working with an engineer to define heating, ventilation, water supply etc 🏠

We are still waiting for an approval of local authorities of our plans but guess what ... Our terrace furniture of FIAM has already arrived :)

Inspired by Slim Aarons' picture "Poolside gossip" we went for full white spaghetti strings and lots more

Most likely we'll only be able to show them to you in Summer 2024

Today the plans have been submitted to the Camara of Almada for approval ! Fingers crossed.

Main elements discussed were the ecological part for heating water and the house itself. As a result we will add a cute separate technical room that will hold the heat pump and garden tools. Most likely the solar panels will go on the roof for maximum efficiency. Not an easy task to merge aesthetics with ecology and functionality :)

For ecological reasons we will not build a swimming pool. We like pools to swim in but that would bring it to a very big size also to heat up which does not make eco sense for this 2 person love nest.
Inspired by irrigation tubs and wonderful fountains, we will build an outside tub and add an outdoor kitchen and shower.

There is 10 trees on the plot. We reduced the surface of the house to 70m2 to only have to cut 3 trees and still keep good comfort and positioning of the house.

Legally we could add a lot more m2 but this will be a love nest with a good amount of green around it to enjoy.

We're finishing the discussions on the interior so the plan is soon ready to be discussed with engineer etc. to validate technical stuff.

The curved terrace will play an important role of connecting the house with the nature. The structure will be light and can be covered in plants. Inspiration is drawn from the beach houses nearby and the quintas.

Another important feature will be the use of coloured glass which will let colored light shine through the entire house. On the maquette you can see it as the red line that runs over the entire facade.

Another important feature of the house is the bow window. To illustrate a picture of the Villa Empain (in Brussels) was distorted. The plans show the outlook on a sunny corner of the garden.

We are now working on how the house will interact with the garden. So words as "pool", "garden tools", "terrace furniture", "outdoor shower" are on the table. More news soon!

The sloped roof will be an important feature. Natural, traditional, Portuguese materials underline the connection of the house with its surrounding nature. This is a first draft so there is interesting discussions on personal needs.

I realize that this is the right time (age?) for me to build a house as I have been able to live in different places which makes this process so much fun to think about and work on with the great architects, Célula .

November 2021. The architects Célula show a first wonderful maquette of the small house. Instantly I like the concept. We do need to check if it is possible to save more trees as I think about ecology a lot. There is no doubt we will only work with local craftsmen and materials yet we need to see how far we can push this as nature is so precious also in this area.

Let's go back to June 2021. After a two year search we found the ideal plot to build our small dream house.

Close to the beach of Fonte da Telha I bought a 315m2 plot in a street called "Belo Paraiso". Even the name "Beautiful Paradise" is a superlative of my beach house dream.

I decided to create this page for those interested to see how we progress towards a house that I would also rent in the future when I wouldn't be enjoying it.
