Eira on our Monte 🌾
The “eira” is a traditional, flat area of ground used for separating grains after harvest. It is a paved surface where grains are spread out and beaten or trodden upon.
The ‘Eira’ holds cultural significance in Portugal, particularly in rural areas. It represents traditional agricultural practices and is often associated with community and harvest celebrations.
The word “eira” comes from the Latin word “area,” which also relates to open spaces.
The expression dates back to the 1500s in Portugal.
The threshing floors also fulfilled a social function, as they provided a place where ceremonies or public events, such as balls or masses, could take place.
