🇬🇧 YEAR 2024 RECAP (SWIPE TO SEE THE STATS)🐋

🐬We had the most incredible year in Ocean Vibes history! Where should we start? 🥹

Over the last 12 months, we have spotted 14 species of cetaceans in Faro (yes, in one single year!). How awesome is that ? 🤩 let’s drop down a few HIGHLIGHTS:

🔷FIN WHALES - we spotted fins 115 times this year with one specific sighting where we had 16 whales feeding at the same time 🤯 (unsure about when to see the giants ? Swipe and check the sightings % per month - it’s very obvious 😁)

🔷MORE SPECIES - in 2024 we saw for the first time in Faro Pilot Whales, Spotted dolphins & Risso Dolphins

🔷RESEARCH - we presented 4 different works in conference (Italy) and conference (Australia). Moreover, a paper was published regarding the impact of WW vessels in dolphins in the Algarve

🔷MSG - this year we logged the highest number of mixed species groups in the area (Poster available in highlights)

🔷OCEAN POLLUTION - our team removed over 200kg of debris from the ocean (which ranges from plastic to glasses and loads of discarded fishing gear!)

🔷TEAM - Ocean Vibes staff increased from 3 to 5 fixed paid positions apart from 16 volunteers and students

🔷TOURISM - Over 4600 tourists had the chance to spot cetaceans with us and learn more about their ecology and conservation issues!

💎SPECIES SIGHTED💎
Common Dolphins; Bottlenose Dolphins; Striped Dolphins; Spotted Dolphins; Harbour Porpoises; Killer Whales; False Killer Whales; Risso Dolphins; Minke Whales; Fin Whales; Bryde Whales; Sei Whales; Humpback Whales; Pilot Whales

We would like to thank EVERYONE for the amazing support over this year. We wish you all a great new year 2025 with lots of sightings and fun in the ocean 🌊

🐋About November 2024🐬

🇦🇺During the last month two of our researchers - Susana & Alfredo - travelled to the other side of the world to present our research work in Perth (Australia) at the 25th Biennal Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals (by )🇦🇺

🔬Alfredo did a short talk about the First insights on False Killer Whales in Mainland Portugal, whereas Susana presented a poster regarding Mixed-Species associations of Cetaceans in South Portugal 🇵🇹

❕Those were the only cetacean related research projects from mainland Portugal represented in this amazing conference ❕

⏩️We will keep working hard to learn more about our local fauna (and how to protect it) while spreading the word throughout the world in the main events relevant to our research 🔬

📝 NEW RESEARCH PAPER 🔬

🐬 “The impact of touristic whale-watching on Delphinus delphis and Tursiops truncatus in the Algarve Coast: Combining acoustic analysis and
land observations” 🐬

‼️ This week a new paper was published with .algarve , & Pattern institute (Faro) regarding the impact of WW vessels in common & Bottlenose dolphins in the Algarve ‼️

🔈 Combining acoustic data collected by our team (and not only) as well as land based observations, we found that WW boats have a significant impact on those species. Moreover, in some areas of the Algarve most of the time the laws are not respected and the dolphins are being overexposed to boats 🚤

🐬 Key findings indicate less echolocation clicks in Bottlenose dolphins with boat presence and simpler-shorter whistles with common dolphins ‼️

Team work makes the dream work 💙

Thanks to an amazing partnership with RAAlg-Rede de Arrojamentos do Algarve para cetáceos e tartarugas marinhas we’ve been able to collect valuable data about cetaceans - diversity, ecology, population dynamics, acoustics and much more 🙏

Combining forces, knowledge and resources is the way to do research with local fauna that will potentially provide the means to implement proper conservation measures for our species 🐋

A big thanks to all of those involved in our scientific trips!

🇬🇧 BRYDE WHALE - 𝘉𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘱𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢 𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘪 🐋

🔅Today during the 11:30AM trip, our biologists spotted a rare baleen species in mainland Portugal: the Bryde whale - also known as “the tropical whale” 🐳

🐋Bryde whales are usually found in warm tropical waters and are rarely seen in latitudes higher than 35°. They are often confused with Sei whales due to their similar morphology, however, Bryde whales show 3 rostrum ridges - one central plus 2 narrower on the sides (clearly visible in this picture) 😊

📏 They can grow up to 15.6 meters and weights of 40.000 Kg, with newborn calves measuring 4m. In Portugal this species occurs mostly in Madeira archipelago 🏝️

❗️THE FIRST REPORT in the literature is our sighting in Faro a few years ago, in a paper that came out in November 16 2021. Shortly after, another was published confirming the species in a nearby area. This is now the 3rd confirmed sighting in Faro ✅

🇵🇹 BALEIA DE BRYDE - 𝘉𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘱𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢 𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘪 🐋

🇬🇧 TODAY: ORCA DAY 🤩

🏆This morning around 10:30 AM our team spotted a pod of Sea Pandas (AKA: “Killer Whales”) - a great ending to an epic week with 7 species of cetaceans that included false killer whales, pilot whales, fin whales and Orcas among others 🏆

🐟 The pod of Iberian Orcas was seen feeding on their favourite prey: Tuna! The foraging occurred at very shallow waters, at some point at 20 meters deep🐟

🤯This family included one of the biggest (2nd biggest?) orcas of Portugal & Spain known as “Levi” (which might still be growing, and one day perhaps surpass the big Pingu - that also visits the area every year ) 🤯

⚠️WARNING TO SAILORS: This pod is slowly moving West over the last days. We recommend to AVOID the area between Faro beach and Albufeira tomorrow. As of Faro-Olhão area itself, we kindly remind everyone that contrary to other parts of the Peninsula, the orcas tend to pass VERY close to shore here ⚠️
❗️2 sail boats reported an interaction this morning, before our sighting with the same pod, and one of them having collateral damage. The animals DID NOT show any interest in our RIB boat nor any recreational or fishing vessel in the area. The “targets” at the moment seem to be sailboats & their rudders only❗️

Follow & advices to decrease your chances of damage.

🇬🇧 ‼️Today is a sad day for all of us: Iceland announced that they will deliberately kill 128 fin whales (same species from the pics) in 2024. All of this is done in the behalf of profits of ONE SINGLE company - that corrupted the government 😡 ‼️

❌It’s outrageous to think that we might NEVER see some of the whales we met & identified this year (and in previous ones) again. In Faro we spot both Mediterranean and North Atlantic fin whales - and some of them move up to Iceland where the barbaric hunt still takes place ☠️

⚠️Our team completely disapproves this and we will keep fighting and opposing Iceland laws. It’s not fair that animals that cross several countries can be killed by a one-side decision of a single nation. This is NOT how Europe should work. They should NOT be allowed to kill whales that live in common waters. It’s a shame that the do absolutely nothing to protect the giants ⚠️

In this so called “developed” Europe, how can we allow such things to happen? We urgently call for action especially from Icelandic people. It’s time to raise a referendum. It’s time to change.

🇬🇧🐬 FALSE KILLER WHALES (𝘗𝘴𝘦𝘶𝘥𝘰𝘳𝘤𝘢 𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘴) 🐬

This week we had a big surprise in Faro when we spotted the first False killer whales of 2024! With very few annual sightings of this species happening in our area, it’s always very exciting to spot those amazing creatures 🤩

We found the 𝘗𝘴𝘦𝘶𝘥𝘰𝘳𝘤𝘢(s) foraging on blue fin tuna around 6nm offshore 🐟

Once again we want to highlight the incredible cetacean diversity of Faro, that unfortunately remains unknown for many people due to poor local promotion, management and awareness. We will keep fighting to show to as many people as possible the REALITY of our species richness in the area. 💪

It’s crucial to learn about the local diversity in order to ensure that conservation measures are properly applied to protect local species ❗️

🇵🇹 🐬FALSAS ORCAS (𝘗𝘴𝘦𝘶𝘥𝘰𝘳𝘤𝘢 𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘴) 🐬

🇬🇧 The season of the giants 🐋

April was once again an incredible month for Whale Watching in Faro. The highlight goes for the Fin whales (𝘉𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘱𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢 𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘴) - that we have spotted almost every day last month!

With very promising sea conditions for early May, we hope to see them for a few weeks more before they leave the area 🐳

🇬🇧 The last 10 days were surely unforgettable for the team 🥳

↩️ Last week, our researchers Susana and Alfredo went to Catania (Italy) to present 2 scientific posters at the 35th European Cetacean Society conference 📊
- .gil1 reported some insights on the use of opportunity platforms for bioacoustics research
- had a poster communicating the first record of Sowerby beaked whales in mainland Portugal !

🐋 back in the water, From Monday and for 4 consecutive days, we spotted whales all the time in Faro - and we beat NEW RECORDS 😍 We witnessed a feeding frenzy with 16+ Baleen whales of 3 different species plus common dolphins in the end ! Tuesday on the other hand, a fin whale surprised us all with 3 incredible beaches 🤯

🧬 With the help of we managed to pull out a science survey with very specific goals for Baleen whale telemetry - and it was a SUCCESS! 🤩

📽️ We are now preparing a really cool video/reels with the best moments to publish soon 🔜

🇬🇧Check this out with SOUND ON 🔊🤯

▶️During a Research survey this week, our team spotted and recorded an unusual interaction: Bottlenose dolphins chasing an Atlantic Puffin.
↪️Our researcher .gil1 was recording dolphin whistles with the hydrophone for ongoing projects, while was filming the animals with the drone, and this is the result!

🎧 The sound / whistles you can hear from the dolphins is exactly their communication in the moment of the interaction (video and sound are aligned and were recorded simultaneously).

🔬 Our research surveys have been a success over the last years with lots of amazing sightings and findings over time. This is only possible thanks to the funding that comes directly from the tours you join! Let us know if you enjoy this type of content, and we will post more educational videos 🥰
