Forte De São Tiago, Funchal, Madeira, Portugal

A yellow hued fort located in the historical centre of Funchal, Madeira,
built to defend the city from pirate attacks.

Originally built to protect the coast from piracy during the 16th-17th century during the reign of Philip I of Portugal, the Fort has been used for many purposes including housing British troops during the Peninsular War, the military police at different times and sheltered victims of the 1803 floods that occurred on the island.

Today this fortress accommodates a museum, a permanent as well as temporary expositions and a restaurant.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

This amazing place was on my list since last year in July when we’ve first arrived in Madeira.
But, due to the huge diversity of the island and so many beautiful places to see, we’ve only managed to visit it last week.

I was impressed by its authenticity and simplicity in terms of shapes and colours.
It is a lovely place to be with friends, enjoying a delicious meal or simply alone enjoying a good coffee while reading a book or working on your projects.
It gives you a good energy, you feel peaceful and therefore more creative and inspired to explore your soul or to share ideas with colleagues and friends.

The Design Center Nini Andrade Silva is located in the city of Funchal, in Molhe building which was once the home of Gonçalves Zarco, former Portuguese navigator and discoverer of the Madeira.
The Design Center Nini Andrade Silva can be seen as a hub and laboratory of ideas and includes a permanent exhibition area, a shop and a restaurant.

Nini Andrade Silva is one of the most prestigious interior designers in the world. She was born in Funchal and became
a regular presence in prestigious publications around the world, such as: The New York Times, Financial Times, El Pais, Wallpaper, Rolls Royce, Excelence Guide and many others.
Besides her career in architecture and interior design, she is also the author of different lines of furniture and her great passion is painting.

“I feel that Design is part of me, due to the bonds established and the feelings provoked by each work that is born” Nini Andrade Silva.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

Streets of Funchal…

Spirited, energetic and absolutely charming city 🤍which determined me to call it ‘home’ very soon after arriving here and deciding to move in.

A city where the the old and the new perfectly mixed together, streets are clean and the trees and lush vegetation surprise you at every corner with amazing vibrant colours and glossy leaves….Plus the sublime Atlantic Ocean 🌊

Since our 1st time here, last July, I called it perfect and although I know perfection does not exist, I still think the island and its capital are very close to being perfect❤️.

Authentic gem of the beautiful ❤️

Small and secluded village in the western part of the island.

Surrounded by the sea and hidden into the green mountains, this little town wraps you in its arms, filling your spirit with peacefulness and exultation.

It is full of life and colours, with wildflowers spread all over the hills and the narrow streets with charming little houses.

From the first moment, It felt like I’ve just stepped into Heaven.

❓Did you know that until the 60´s, this remote village could only be reached by boat?

Due to isolation and poor living conditions, many of the residents chose to immigrate in search of a better life.
Nowadays and due to the new roads, many people seek Jardim do Mar to retire in a stunning and quiet place.

Also the waves here are ideal for surfing!🏄‍♀️🌊🏄‍♂️

Câmara do Lobos 🎏🤍

An idilic fisherman village next to Funchal, capital of Madeira.

If you want to escape from the city, Camara do Lobos might be just the perfect place to enjoy a full day or a quiet afternoon while drinking poncha, eating fresh fish
and lose yourself on the narrow streets of this old town.

Poncha is local traditional alcoholic drink made of distilled alcohol made from sugar cane juice, honey, sugar and either lemon, orange or maracujá (passion fruit) juices.

The "ArT of opEN doors project" has started in 2011 and was initiated by photographer José Maria Zyberchem in collaboration with the city council and a few other personalities including the international designer Nini Andrade Silva.

Many local artists were invited to create something unique by painting the old doors into houses, restaurants and galleries.
The doors of houses, abandoned shops, deteriorated areas received a new life, in order to sensitize people, towards the art and culture that fills these spaces.�Funchal Old town has been revitalised and has became one of the top touristic attractions.

Funchal is the Capital of Madeira, the first place the Portuguese settled overseas in the 15th Century, in the Age of Discoveries.

It is Madeira’s biggest town and despite its small size (around 100.000 inhabitants) it has a lot to offer- historic sites, museums, botanical gardens and a large variety of activities.

Funchal is the vibrant city, beautiful and welcoming, characterised by an abundance of colorful and exotic flora, well maintained gardens and parks, charming Portuguese architecture, amazing viewpoints, beaches and swimming pools with ocean water.

A few must do activities in Funchal❤️

1. Dolphin and whale watching cruises

2. Walk in the old center and admire the street art on Rua da Santa Maria,

3. Enjoy the views from Monte Cable Car.

4. Visit Cathedral of Funchal (Sé Cathedral), dating back to the 15th century.

5. Visit Mercado dos Lavradores (Farmer’s market) is a fruit, vegetable, flower and fish market dating from 1940. Although you could see it as expensive, you’ll find there fruits that you haven’t seen or tasted before.

6. Go to Madeira Atlantic Festival is organised each year in June. There are boat parties and cruises by catamaran on every Saturdays where you can enjoy amazing sunsets and watch firework shows at midnight.

Surrounded by the ocean and guarded by green vivid mountains, the island has an almost majestic and overwhelming beauty.
It allows you to be free, to feel deeper and to connect to your soul in a genuine manner.

It’s like floating on air and receiving higher vibrations. You feel lighter and ready to overcome every obstacle.
Suddenly, you are becoming a better version of yourself.

My belief is that every soul is shinning here in a better light.
I can finally feel that I’ve found my own way and that Madeira is helping me become the most authentic version of myself.

Would you believe that it only takes around 30-40 minutes to get from the coast 🌊🏝🏖 to the peaks 🧗‍♀️🏔🚵‍♀️🚠?

The island offers a huge variety of activities, landscapes and breathtaking views at every corner.

The island is also noted for its wine, gastronomy, flora & fauna and levada walks.

A levada is a irrigation channel originated out of the necessity of bringing large amounts of water from the west and northwest of the island to the drier southeast. Today the levadas are one of the best tourists attractions and one of the best ways to get to explore the island, the vegetation and to come across beautiful landscapes, waterfalls hiking trails and amazing views to the Atlantic ocean.

Also it is an UNESCO World Heritage Site for its Laurel Forest, a type of subtropical forest with evergreen leaves.
Laurel forests evolved millions of years ago and used to cover much of the mainland in North and South America, Europe, Australia and Africa.

So if you want to have the time of your life, you MUST visit this piece of heaven.
It is basically impossible to get tired of this place.☺️⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
