The best olive oil is hand picked 🖐️🫒🇵🇹
Olive harvest in Alentejo typically begins in late October and can extend through December, depending on the olive variety, weather conditions, and desired ripeness. November is considered the peak month, especially for producing high-quality extra virgin olive oil.
Alentejo’s mild climate and unique soil conditions make it an ideal region for olive cultivation, and many local farmers still use traditional hand-picking techniques, especially on small-scale farms that prioritize quality.
Hand-picking olives is considered superior to machine harvesting for several reasons, especially regarding olive quality, tree health, and environmental impact.
The olives harvested in Alentejo are often processed quickly to maintain freshness, resulting in high-quality oils with rich, fruity flavors.

1000ha of pure Alentejo wilderness
The Noudar Nature Park is located on a farm estate called Herdade da Coitadinha, nestled “over-the-hills” between the winding Ardila and Múrtega rivers, surrounded by hills and peaks near the town of Barrancos .
The road from the Park’s entrance to Noudar Castle passes through an extensive holm oak grove (‘montado’), ending with a majestic view of the confluence of the two waterways.
As you walk along the ancient footpaths and dirt roads, you’ll discover other stories—valley floors where watermills rest, wild forests on slopes that descend into the rivers, and rocky ridges that rise above the landscape.
The pastures, holm oak and olive groves, grazing cattle, and herds of black pigs are common to neighboring farms in this region. However, here, the more abrupt and rocky terrain has protected dense clusters of holm oaks and forests, where the light struggles to penetrate—some of the last remaining enclaves in a landscape largely altered by human activity.
In Noudar, life unfolds in a state of wilderness and absolute purity.

Portugal’s “Vila Morena”
📍Grândola , Alentejo
Grândola is known for its rich history, agricultural traditions, and cultural heritage. Grândola gained national prominence due to the “Grândola, Vila Morena” song by Zeca Afonso, which became a symbol of the Portuguese Carnation Revolution in 1974. The song was broadcast on the radio as a signal for the start of the peaceful revolution that overthrew Portugal’s dictatorship and established democracy.
The town itself is surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes, including cork oak forests and olive groves, and is relatively close to the Atlantic coastline, with nearby beaches like Melides and Comporta being popular destinations. Grândola’s economy traditionally revolves around agriculture, particularly cork production, as well as tourism in recent years. It is a quiet, charming town that reflects the slower pace and rural character of the Alentejo region.
