The first thing we did after unpacking the car was…
As you know already we have a reforestation project in our village where we plant an indigenous tree 🌳 for every customer coming on our trips.
During our last trip around the north of Portugal 🇵🇹 we collected many acorns in some of the most iconic places in the region. After preparing the soil we’ve put them in small pots and now it’s just a matter of time before they start to germinate and become beautiful oaks to be planted next spring!!

To finish off the trip around the north of Portugal we went to a different country! Well, at least the local people speak two different languages there and even the books are different. The Celtic influences, centuries of history and the proudest people turn this region into a well preserved secret 🤫.

Continuing our journey across the northeast of Portugal we went to absolutely magical places that could well be taken from a Lord of the Rings movie. Later in the day we were literally surrounded by hundreds of swifts and swallows while watching the majestic flight of the griffon vultures above us. This land never ceases to amaze us with its beauty, rich history and natural diversity!

Driving along the Douro wine region at this time of the year is a feast for the eyes and the soul. Today was all about seeing, feeling and tasting the uniqueness of this magical part of Portugal ! Ah if only pictures could make justice to the beauty of this place!

After a few challenging days ( thank you storm Kirk), today was time to take a break, leave the cars to rest and enjoy one of life’s best things: sharing a glass of wine with friends in a truly beautiful scenario. And what better place to do it than ?
Definitely a day to remember !

The weather continued to play tricks with us today: from the thickest fog to fallen trees in our path, we had everything you could imagine! In the end we were fortunate enough to drive through the vineyards where one of the best wines in the world is produced. Despite all the difficulties we made it to our destination safely and Now it’s time to prepare ourselves for what is coming tomorrow!

Today we could appreciate the brute force of nature but also its sheer beauty! In the aftermaths of hurricane Kirk we saw many signs of destruction, so local knowledge to navigate the group safely to our destination was key today. The rest of the day was simply about admiring the natural beauty of this part of our beloved country. Nature is definitely the single greatest thing on earth!! 🌍 why do humans keep on destroying it?!

Nature isn’t always about sunny days, clear skies and perfect scenery like if you were looking at a postcard! Over the last 48 hours we’ve been hit by torrential rain and gale force winds coming from a storm called Kirk. After a few adjustments to the initial plan, we ended up having a great day where we learned a lot about the local culture and the history of this part of Portugal. Mystic is the best word to describe the environment we encountered today!

How about a trip back to the Roman Empire to begin the second day of our trip around the north of Portugal? The biggest medicinal Roman baths in the country and a few other unique places along the way kept us busy in a very wet day. Hopefully the storm will be gone tomorrow and we’ll continue our journey!!!

Day one of our Secret north of Portugal tour was a great experience despite the weather. Or did the weather make it even more interesting?! From start to finish we’ve discovered the essence of this beautiful part of the country. Keep following us as we explore the whole north of Portugal through places normal tourists would not dare to dream about.

Looking back on our Food and Wine trip, this truly was a journey of discovery and gastronomic indulgence. A region as vast as the Beira Interior in central Portugal, which runs from the Tagus in the south to the Douro in the north, is much more than its stunning landscapes and historic background. Over the course of 10 days and more than 1000 km covered, we found a territory proud of its rich gastronomy, traditions, endogenous products and of course, its wines, some of which are produced in conditions that challenge the human capacity to tame the land and create unique landscapes. And to end the trip in style, nothing like a truly immersive experience, in what is perhaps the most symbolic phase of wine production: the harvest. From picking the grapes to treading them by foot, as has been traditional for centuries. This is what turns a trip into a memorable experience, or as one of the guests told us, "a story to tell to my grandsons"!

After crossing the high mountains of Serra da Estrela ⭐️, we reached the Dão wine region in Portugal. These mountains certainly are famous for the sheep cheese and wool products, but today we discovered that they also produce some of the best wines in the country. What a reception we had at Textura Wines and what a revelation their wines were! To finish off the day on a high note, we went for a wild boar 🐗 stew… It doesn’t get any more local and traditional than this …

Our food and wine trip continued yesterday with a visit to a special winery in the Beira Interior wine region. It was fantastic to see old indigenous grape varieties being rediscovered by a brave and dedicated couple who are setting new standards in the field.
What a wonderful learning experience and what great wines!

Great first day of our Food and Wine trip.
To start with, we headed to the southernmost winery in the Beira Interior wine region. The proximity of the river Tagus and the temperature range sure give the local wines a nice balance of aromas! The wine tasting went rather well and served as a wonderful substitute for lunch 😁.
After some great drives along a river canyon we stopped at a local textile museum where we learned more about the traditon of processing wool from the local breed of Merina sheep.
Finally, we went to a local cheese farm to fill our fridges with some of the best local sheep cheese in the Beira Baixa region. The smell inside the curing room was rather intense to say the least, but boy do they taste good 😉🤤 ...
Tomorrow it's time to head slightly northeast for more food and wine adventures...

For your peace of mind, before coming to Portugal with a "guide", check their credentials and ask for the permits to run the trips they advertise...
