Did you know that the Capelinhos Volcano, on Faial Island, had an eruption that lasted 13 months, from 1957 to 1958, and formed a new land area of about 2.4 km²? In addition, the volcano spewed ash and smoke all the way to Europe, leading to the closure of airports in mainland Portugal and Spain.
