🇬🇧 They're here! The great shearwaters (𝘗𝘶𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘴) usually pass by the Açores around the end of August en route to their southern breeding grounds where they will spend the winter. These shearwaters are darker than the Cory's (𝘊𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘴 𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴) and can be recognised easily by their black beaks. Did you know that most great shearwaters, well over 5 million pairs, nest on Tristan da Cunha, a remote archipelago in the South Atlantic that is part of the British Overseas Territory?🦤🇬🇧

🇵🇹 Chegaram! As Cagarros de coleira (𝘗𝘶𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘴) costumam passar pelos Açores no final de agosto, a caminho dos seus locais de reprodução a sul, onde passarão o inverno. Estes cagarros de coleira são mais escuros que os cagarros (𝘊𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘴 𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴) e podem ser facilmente reconhecidos pelo seu bico preto. Sabia que a maioria dos Cagarros de coleira, mais de 5 milhões de casais, nidificam em Tristão da Cunha, um arquipélago remoto no Atlântico Sul que faz parte do Território Britânico Ultramarino?🦤🇬🇧

🇬🇧 Most large baleen whales such as blue whales and humpback whales (𝘔𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘱𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢 𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘦) pass through the Azores in spring on their migration route from warm southern waters, where they give birth to their babies, to cold and nutrient-rich northern waters. This year, however, we saw two individuals repeatedly from the 18th June till the 29th of July, meaning that they have been moving around Faial for over a month! One is easily recognizable by a small hole in its dorsal fin and a distinctive white-black colour pattern on the underside of its tail, while we were able to identify the other one from the ID photos of its tail. 📅🐳

🇵🇹 A maioria das grandes baleias de barbas, como as baleias azuis e as baleias jubarte (𝘔𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘱𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢 𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘦), passam pelos Açores na primavera, na sua rota de migração das águas quentes do Sul, onde dão à luz os seus bebés, para as águas frias e ricas em nutrientes do norte. Este ano, no entanto, vimos dois indivíduos repetidamente de 18 de junho a 29 de julho, o que significa que têm estado a circular no Faial há mais de um mês! Um é facilmente reconhecível por um pequeno orifício na barbatana dorsal e um padrão de cor branco-preto distinto na parte inferior da cauda, enquanto conseguimos identificar o outro a partir das fotos de identificação da cauda. 📅🐳

I'm staying in Faial over the summer to continue working with a commitment to personal and professional growth. 🇬🇧 Not only the impressive collection of marine mammals around the Azores, but also these feathered friends, the Cory's Shearwaters (Calonectris borealis) are a big part of the Azorean whale watching experience. With a few strokes of their brown-and-white wings, they deftly zigzag across the water's surface between the waves. At sea, they are often silent, but once night falls over Faial, a loud call comes from their yellow beaks. Did you know that the scientific name of these birds comes from ancient Greek and literally means "good swimmer"?🏊🏾‍♀️

Com algumas batidas das suas asas castanhas e brancas, ziguezagueiam habilmente pela superfície da água entre as ondas. No mar, são muitas vezes silenciosas, mas quando a noite cai sobre o Faial, um grito alto soa dos seus bicos amarelos. Sabia que o nome científico destas aves vem do grego antigo e significa literalmente "bom nadador"? 🏊🏾‍♀️

🇬🇧 It's already summer, but today felt like springtime around Faial! We started the morning with a breaching S***m Whale (Physeter macrocephalus) in front of the Capelinhos Volcano, Atlantic Spotted Dolphins (Stenella frontalis) as far as one's eyes could see and a foraging Sei Whale (Balaenoptera borealis). The afternoon trip revolved around the magnificent sighting of a lunge-feeding Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) and our first sighting of false Killer Whales (Pseudorca crassidens) of this season! What a spectacular day!🤩

🇵🇹 Já estamos no verão, mas hoje parecia primavera no Faial! Começámos a manhã com um cachalote (Physeter macrocephalus) a saltar em frente ao Vulcão dos Capelinhos, golfinhos-pintados (Stenella frontalis) a perder de vista e uma baleia-sardinheira (Balaenoptera borealis) a forragear. A viagem da tarde foi marcada pelo magnífico avistamento de uma baleia-de-bossa (Megaptera novaeangliae), golfinhos comuns (Delphinus delphis) e pelo primeiro avistamento de falsas orcas (Pseudorca crassidens) desta época! Que dia espetacular!🤩

🇬🇧 In today's trips, in the North of Pico, we collected the sightings of 2 resident species (s***m whales with adults, juvenile and calf - 𝘗𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘴, and common dolphins - 𝘋𝘦𝘭𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘴) and one non-resident, the playful Atlantic spotted dolphin (𝘚𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴). Sunny, no wind, lots of animals: perfect trip! 🐬 🤩

🇬🇧 One black stripe from the dolphin's mouth to the pectoral fin and a second black stripe from the beak to the animal's tail; this can only mean one thing: striped dolphin (𝘚𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘦𝘳𝘶𝘭𝘦𝘰𝘢𝘭𝘣𝘢) spotted in the north of Faial! Did you know that this species has a typical way of moving quickly through the water? They often make long, rapid jumps close to the water surface to move rapidly. Don't they just look like a work of art?🎨

🇵🇹 Uma risca preta desde a boca do golfinho até à barbatana peitoral e uma segunda risca preta desde o bico até à cauda do animal, só pode significar uma coisa: golfinho-riscado (𝘚𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘦𝘳𝘶𝘭𝘦𝘰𝘢𝘭𝘣𝘢) avistado no norte do Faial! 🇬🇧 Spotted dolphins (𝘚𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴) who doesn't love them? These animals are born without their spots and with a white belly and a dark grey back. They then differentiate between different stages of growth based on age and, correspondingly, the number of spots that develop. Atlantic Spotted Dolphins evolve from so-called 'two-toned' without spots to 'speckled' with a few dots. Once full of spots we call them 'mottled' and from when the animal is fully grown and appears black with white dots we call them 'fused'. We now regularly spot (pun intended😉) these summer visitors on our whale-watching trips. Come join us and maybe you will be able to see the spots of these beautiful animals up close! 🐬🌞

🇵🇹 Os golfinhos pintados (𝘚𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴), quem é que não gosta deles? Estes animais nascem sem pintas, com o ventre branco e o dorso cinzento escuro. Depois, diferenciam-se entre diferentes fases de crescimento com base na idade e, correspondentemente, no número de pintas que se desenvolvem. Os golfinhos-pintados do Atlântico evoluem do chamado ""bicolor"" sem pintas para o ""salpicado"" com algumas pintas. Uma vez cheios de pintas, chamamos-lhes ""mosqueados"" e, quando o animal está completamente crescido e aparece preto com pintas brancas, chamamos-lhes ""fundidos"". Agora avistamos regularmente estes visitantes de verão nas nossas viagens de observação de baleias. Junte-se a nós e talvez possa ver de perto as pintas destes belos animais! 🐬🌞

🇬🇧 Half June and we are still lucky! Today we had the opportunity to see an humpback whale (𝘔𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘱𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢 𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘦): it was seen foraging and feeding around in the North of Faial, and when we arrived it was surrounded by a big group of common dolphins (𝘋𝘦𝘭𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘴) and Cory's shearwaters (𝘊𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘴 𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴). Do you notice something different in its dorsal fin? 👀 🔍

🇵🇹 Metade de junho e ainda temos sorte! Hoje tivemos a oportunidade de ver uma baleia de bossa (𝘔𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘱𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢 𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘪𝘢𝘦): foi visto a forragear e a alimentar-se no Norte do Faial, e quando chegámos estava rodeado por um grande grupo de golfinhos comuns (𝘋𝘦𝘭𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘴) e cagarros (𝘊𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘴 𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴). 🇬🇧 Sowerby's beaked whales (𝘔𝘦𝘴𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘥𝘰𝘯 𝘣𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘴) on our morning trip today! Five or six of these fascinating but timid creatures very calmly swam past our boat bobbing their characteristic pointy snouts in and out of the water. Did you know that in Sowerby's beaked whales only the male animal has a mere two teeth positioned far back in his lower jaw? Females only have vestigial teeth that do not normally erupt. Hence the name 𝘔𝘦𝘴𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘥𝘰𝘯 ""𝙗𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙨"". 🦷🐋

🇵🇹 Baleias de bico de Sowerby (𝘔𝘦𝘴𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘥𝘰𝘯 𝘣𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘴) na nossa viagem matinal de hoje! Cinco ou seis destas fascinantes mas tímidas criaturas passaram calmamente pelo nosso barco, balançando os seus característicos focinhos pontiagudos para dentro e para fora da água. Sabia que nas baleias-de-bico-de-Sowerby apenas o macho tem dois dentes posicionados bem atrás no maxilar inferior? As fêmeas têm apenas dentes vestigiais que normalmente não irrompem. Daí o nome 𝘔𝘦𝘴𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘥𝘰𝘯 ""𝙗𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙨"". 🦷🐋

🇬🇧 No whale watching trip without our vigias! Our 'eyes at sea' are vital and provide invaluable information daily. Chances are high that when we spot something at sea, they already had their eyes on it from miles away on land. Blows high and low, dorsal fins big and small or splashes and breaches, almost nothing escapes the trained eye of these seasoned spotters. Obrigada vigias!🔭👀

🇵🇹 Não há viagem de observação de baleias sem as nossas vigias! Os nossos ""olhos no mar"" são vitais e dão-nos informações valiosas todos os dias. Há grandes probabilidades de que, quando avistamos algo no mar, eles já o tenham visto a quilómetros de distância em terra. Bufos altos e baixos, barbatanas dorsais grandes e pequenas ou salpicos e brechas, quase nada escapa ao olhar treinado destes observadores experientes. Obrigada vigias!🔭👀

🇬🇧 Friday we had the opportunity to attend an unusual sighting... After a baby s***m whale (𝘗𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘴) was left alone at the surface by the diving adult female, it was joined by a group of bottlenose dolphins (𝘛𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘱𝘴 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴) that started to ""bother"" it. We don't know exactly what was going on, but surely the little one was not very happy to have company and several times rolled over on its belly! It all ended when another adult female came to the surface and approached, thus driving the dolphins away and giving the calf some peace of mind. What a wonder of nature, every trip surprises us! 😮 🐬

🇵🇹 Sexta-feira tivemos a oportunidade de assistir a um avistamento invulgar... Depois de um cachalote bebé (𝘗𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘴) ter sido deixado sozinho à superfície pela fêmea adulta que mergulhava, juntou-se-lhe um grupo de golfinhos roazes (𝘛𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘱𝘴 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘴) que começaram a “incomodá-lo”. Não sabemos exatamente o que se passava, mas de certeza que o pequeno não estava muito contente por ter companhia e várias vezes rolou de barriga para cima! Tudo acabou quando uma outra fêmea adulta veio à superfície e se aproximou, afastando assim os golfinhos e dando alguma tranquilidade à cria. Que maravilha da natureza, cada viagem nos surpreende! 😮 🐬

🇬🇧 What is exactly a Portuguese man o' war? 𝘗𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘢 𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴 is a siphonophore, a colony made of a group of animals with various forms and functions (floating, capturing prey, feeding, and reproduction), all working together as one. It's quite easy to recognize for its floatable part, that usually is blue, violet and pink and floats on the surface, but if you look beneath you can see its tentacles that can grow to an average of 10 meters! In one of our last trip we found this Portuguese man o' war that was really big! Can you see the different organisms? 👀 💙 💜 🩷

🇵🇹 O que é exatamente uma caravela portuguesa? 𝘗𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘢 𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴 é um sifonóforo, uma colónia constituída por um grupo de animais com várias formas e funções (flutuar, capturar presas, alimentar-se e reproduzir-se), trabalhando todos juntos como um só. É bastante fácil de reconhecer pela sua parte flutuante, que normalmente é azul, violeta e rosa e flutua à superfície, mas se olharmos por baixo podemos ver os seus tentáculos que podem crescer até uma média de 10 metros! Numa das nossas últimas viagens encontrámos esta caravela portuguesa que era mesmo grande! Consegues ver os diferentes organismos? 👀 💙 💜 🩷

🇬🇧 Faial didn't get its nickname 'blue island' without good reason! Every summer, especially in late July, early August, hydrangeas form a colourful blue sheet over the otherwise green vegetation. High soil acidity and fertile soil due to volcanic activity make Faial the perfect growing ground for these gorgeous flowers. When are you paying our blue island a visit? 💙

Todos os verões, especialmente no final de julho e início de agosto, as hortênsias formam um colorido tapete azul sobre a vegetação verde. A elevada acidez do solo e o solo fértil devido à atividade vulcânica fazem do Faial o local perfeito para o crescimento destas lindas flores. Quando é que vai visitar a nossa ilha azul? 💙

🇬🇧 Navigating the sea with the help of earth's invisible magnetic field, the Loggerhead Sea turtle (𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘢) can travel thousands of miles. The Gulf Stream and the North Atlantic Current bring hatchlings from the West Atlantic Ocean to the waters around the Açores. After 4 to 5 months of hitchhiking these strong ocean currents, juvenile individuals finally arrive here to our delight!🐢

🇵🇹 Navegando no mar com a ajuda do campo magnético invisível da Terra, a Tartaruga-boba (𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘢) pode viajar milhares de quilómetros. A Corrente do Golfo e a Corrente do Atlântico Norte trazem as crias do Oceano Atlântico Ocidental para as águas dos Açores. Após 4 a 5 meses à boleia destas fortes correntes oceânicas, os juvenis chegam finalmente aqui para nosso deleite! 🐢

🇬🇧 Today a curious sperm whale calf swam up to our boat. After a quick investigation, it swam off and reunited with the adult female that was guarding them. When the calf approached us, the engine was in neutral and the boat was stopped. 🇵🇹 Hoje um curioso cachalote nadou até ao nosso barco. On the 30th of may we had the most incredible sperm whale day! Sperm whale soup! This was 1 of 2 close encounters! The boat was stopped and the whale passed right by us. Sincere apologies for the shakey footage but seems like excitement took over the biologist filming this event (as you will probably be able to tell from her face!)

Feels like summer is back today and everyone is happy about it!

The blow of a blue whale can reach a height of up to 12 meters! To put that into perspective, imagine the height of two stacked giraffes!! Here’s a sequence of a blow in homage to the arrival of blue whales to our waters! 3 Sightings this week! Disclaimer: we do not guarantee the sighting of stacked giraffes at sea.
