Valentim de Barros was a Portuguese dancer born in 1916 who graced stages across Europe, even performing with the Stuttgart Opera in the 1930s. But upon returning to Portugal, his life changed dramatically: he was arrested by the dictatorship’s political police and subjected to a lobotomy, electroshock, and years of institutionalization.

Labeled with a diagnosis of “homosexual psychopathy and passive pederasty,” Valentim was treated as a criminal and patient, reflecting the medical and social views on homosexuality of that era.

Valentim’s story symbolizes the social stigma against homosexuality in Portugal, leading to a historical erasure and denial of q***r identities. Many influential figures were denied their true identity in historical narratives, perpetuating prejudice under the excuse that “sexuality doesn’t matter.”

But if it doesn’t matter, why must it be hidden, lobotomized, erased?

The slogan “Portugal is not a small country,” designed to inspire nationalist pride, is a reminder of how maps and imagery can be used to shape ideology and erase the realities of colonialism and oppression.

This propaganda from 1934 was a powerful tool in Salazar’s regime. By superimposing the Portuguese colonies over a map of Europe, the regime attempted to project an image of grandeur, masking the true political and social realities both in the metropole and the colonies.

As we often say in the tours, Portugal’s history is deeply connected to a need to assert supremacy in order to feel powerful. This is the colonizer mindset—someone must be made smaller so that I can feel bigger.

But what’s the danger of not being able to connect and empathize with others, and instead, feeling the need to diminish them?

The best part about the Q***r Nightlife Experience is that we take you to the cozy, welcoming q***r venues—places where our community truly belongs. 🥹

These aren’t nightclubs, but rather restaurants, bars, and cultural associations where you can connect, enjoy, and feel at home. 🌈

is one of these places where we feel home, and it’s a must-stop on most of our tours!

Did you know that by supporting travel businesses that actively consider their surroundings, the locals, and the community, you’re helping create a more thoughtful and caring way to experience travel? ✨🌍

It seems simple, but we often don’t question who or what we’re supporting—both financially and in terms of the content we share.

This week, join us in the mission to support q***r-owned businesses and services, while learning about Portuguese history and the erased chapters of its past.

How the tour started x How it ended!

Feeling very grateful for the trust of the big groups we had the opportunity to guide through our city. Magic happens through connection, and we believe that’s definitely the ponto forte of our business.

Also grateful for Julie, who guided 3 big tours this weekend with so much care and attention, just as she always does. We’re so lucky to have such an amazing guide by our side.

“Defender of the indigenous people and human rights.”

That’s what’s written on the monument in homage to Padre António Vieira, who was an active and selective colonizer.

Join our Historical Tour to discover more about this monument, placed in Largo da Trindade in 2017.

We are not a tourism company; we are a company that researches LGBTQ+ history, intentionally naming, unlearning, and reimagining structures, norms, and values.

Through our walking tours, we aim to expand knowledge, reduce prejudices, and share the voices and experiences of people marginalized by the persistent inequalities, and systemic discrimination in Portugal.

Let’s reimagine history? 🔥
