Portugal's Carnation Revolution - a heady 19-month period of democratic experimentation - came to an abrupt end 49 years ago today with a counter-coup led by right-wing elements in the army supported by those who wanted a parliamentary democracy, plus the US and Germany, leading to today's parliamentary liberal democracy.

Today is the 269th anniversary of the Great Lisbon Earthquake - at 8.5-9 on the Richter Scale, one of the most powerful in the history of humanity. Around 40000 people died in Lisbon alone. Lisbon still experiences occasional earthquakes - the last a 5.4 on 26th August this year.

Do bullfights still exist in Portugal? The answer is yes, but they have become a marginal phenomenon in Portuguese society. Lisbon's bullring at Campo Pequeno is a striking neo-moorish building, but these days is used more for musicals and rock concerts than bullfights.
