20/08/2024

Alfama is one of the oldest and most charming neighbourhoods in Lisbon. It’s a historic area known for its narrow, winding streets, traditional houses, and vibrant culture.

Alfama dates back to the time of the Moors, who ruled Lisbon before the Christian reconquest in the 12th century. The name "Alfama" comes from the Arabic word "al-hamma," meaning baths or fountains, reflecting the area’s origins as a place with many springs and baths.

Fado Music: Alfama is the heart of Lisbon’s fado music scene. Fado is a traditional Portuguese music genre known for its melancholic tunes and lyrics. You can find many small restaurants and bars where live fado performances are held in the evenings.

Miradouros (Viewpoints): Alfama has several viewpoints, such as Miradouro de Santa Luzia and Miradouro das Portas do Sol, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the neighbourhood, the river, and the city.

The neighbourhood is known for its traditional Portuguese houses, many of which are covered in colourful azulejos (ceramic tiles). The streets are often steep and narrow, adding to the area’s unique charm.

Alfama is a must-visit for anyone wanting to experience the heart of Lisbon, with its rich history, cultural vibrancy, and timeless beauty.

If you are interested and want to experience it in live join us in our Walking Tours of Alfama & Castle.

20/08/2024

The 25th of April Bridge (Ponte 25 de Abril) is a famous suspension bridge in Lisbon. It stretches across the Tagus River, connecting Lisbon to the city of Almada on the other side.

The bridge was opened on August 6, 1966. It was originally called "Salazar Bridge," named after Portugal's leader at that time. But after the peaceful revolution on April 25, 1974, which ended the dictatorship, the bridge was renamed to honour that important date.

The bridge was built by an American company that also worked on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge in the United States, which is why the two bridges look somewhat similar. It took four years to build.
The bridge is about 2,277 meters (7,470 feet) long, making it one of the longest suspension bridges in Europe.

In 1999, a lower deck was added to the bridge to allow trains to pass underneath the road.
There is a fee to use the bridge, but only when driving towards Lisbon. Walking and biking are not allowed on the bridge.

Since Lisbon is in an area that can experience earthquakes, the bridge was built to be strong enough to handle them.
The 25th of April Bridge is not just a vital road and rail link; it's also a symbol of Portugal’s history and a key part of Lisbon’s identity.

Belém Tower is a famous historical landmark in Lisbon, Portugal.

Built in the early 16th century, it was originally designed as a fortress to protect the city and guard the entrance to the Tagus River. The tower is a beautiful example of Manueline architecture, with intricate stone carvings, balconies, and a statue of Our Lady of Safe Homecoming, which sailors would pray to before their voyages.

Belém Tower has played a significant role in Portugal's maritime history, as it was from this point that many famous explorers set sail during the Age of Discoveries. Today, the tower is one of Lisbon’s most visited attractions. Visitors can explore its rooms, climb to the top for stunning views of the river, and learn about its history through various exhibits.

The tower is also a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized for its cultural and historical importance.

Whether you’re interested in history, architecture, or simply enjoying stunning river views, our Walking Tour in Belem is a good opportunity to see it.

Originating in Lisbon, this sweet and slightly tart drink is often enjoyed as a shot, sometimes with a whole cherry at the bottom of the glass. It’s a beloved staple in Portuguese culture, particularly in Lisbon and the town of Óbidos, where it’s served in small bars known as "Ginjinha" shops.
