Get Lost Go Local

Get Lost Go Local Explore the city as a Lisboan, do what locals do and have a genuine experience in Lisbon. http://getlostgolocal.wordpress.com I was big in Hong-Kong!

Get Lost, Go local was founded 2012, after helping two Hong-Kong journalists discovering the secret hidden spots of Lisbon. I showed them the places, the views, local food, history, nightlife, trends and told them who we are as Lisboans. Results came some months later in a weekly magazine… wow!!! The article about Lisbon was a great work with excellent photos about our beautiful city. I started re

ceiving emails with requests to provide walking tours in a few weeks... the rest of the story you know already! Get Lost, Go Local is not a normal walking tour company, it's more a concept. It's how you travel and discover the city through the eyes of a local. I believe this is the best way of experience the local culture. Take a tour with a local person as your guide, and discover all the hidden secret spots of Lisbon.

Time for the morning boost of happiness and good energy. Portuguese coffee is usually roasted for 20m at a low temperature while the Italian one is only roasted for 12m. That explains not only the bitterness but also the punchiness of our beloved coffee. Coffee in Portugal ia strong and a small amount as you’ll find on our espresso will be enough to wake an elephant. We’re surrounded by good coffee and really, stay out of Starbucks and all those megabrands. That’s only sugar.
Drinking 3 espressos a day doesn’t keep the doctor away, but for sure will keep you awake (sometimes longer than you really need).
#1 rule (for people that struggle with sleep): Don’t drink coffee after 5pm. #
#2 rule: Don’t add sugar #3 rule: Send it back if the cup isn’t burning —————————— #Λισαβόνα #Лиссабо́н #リス #里斯本 #里斯本

Today an article about how tourists are being deceived in Lisbon. Unfortunately this is what tourists have become for a lot of people in the industry. Take as much money as you can from them. Travel responsible and be smart where and how you are spending your money. Always respect and keep in mind that locals here make roughly 600€ a month. Avoid the traps as they are so easy to spot, don’t follow your phone for everything 🙌🏽

The beach is lovely, not packed like any others in the south, a bit windy (fine by me) but the water is warm enough. The waves are just a bit rough. Unfortunately it’s just a little too rough for families with young kids, bad swimmers so… (drumroll)… today we weren’t allowed to swim. This could be easily one of the toughest seas in Europe, but we have worst in Portugal. Just to name a few in the district of Lisbon Adraga, Praia das Maçãs, Azenhas do Mar… we’re used to this.
In any case, don’t turn your back to the sea, respect the flag (red flag means, swimming is not allowed and you can’t go to the water) and, last but not least, if the guy with a six pack, sunglasses, curly hair like David Hasselhoff and a whistle tells you to walk back, do it. The sea doesn’t warn you. A good swimmer would never swim in these waters unless he had a very good reason. Don’t do it! 🌊

Portugal is now having a big thunderstorm with everything’s included in this all you can see buffet. If you didn’t sleep well last night due to the noise or you’re afraid of storms, or, instead you had to open the windows and doors and appreciate a natural fireworks (like me)… this is normal. It’s hot in here, the Sahara sand dust is covering the cars and the low pressure brought a bunch of clouds here. Cold air and very hot air don’t get along, there was a fight, hot air won.
Thunderbolt and lightning, very very frightening. —————————— #Λισαβόνα #Лиссабо́н #リス #里斯本 #里斯本

Lisbon is not Disneyland. It’s a city with its own pace and full of life, with schedules and rules, specially outside the downtown and adjacent areas. Respect the locals, otherwise this theme park will have to close down soon for maintenance. Instead of following the trends, use your instinct. Who knows what you’ll find. The city is open for everyone, it always was. Forget your mobile at home. Do it at least once. Learn a few words of Portuguese, get a bus to a new neighbourhood, eat in a corner place full of builders and cab drivers, try whatever they’re eating, go where it’s not trendy and popular, buy from local small shops and add something good during your stay, so locals can change their minds and apologise tourists for all the damage they did in the past 10 years. Do it before it’s too late. Travel responsibly and respect the locals. —————————— #Λισαβόνα #Лиссабо́н #リス #里斯本 #里斯本

(…)”The current issue with travel is not an overabundance of travelers, but rather the overwhelming demand for the same experiences.
This current overabundance of going to the same places and doing the same things at the same times is due to a reliance on popular travel websites and reviews.
This leads to the belief that one must visit specific bars or stay in certain neighborhoods or visit certain sights to truly experience a destination.
This not only creates a sense of disappointment but also a competitive and overcrowded atmosphere which results in poor experiences for locals and travelers alike.(…)”

Lisbon being Lisbon. Countdown for the next Timeout article about this street (can’t tell you where it is, sorry) and the consequent hype, eventually changing its old street name for something more trendy and more pronounceable - we have the pink, they blue and the green street already, this will be... the “beautiful scarf’s street” Soon, the uninvited crowds of influencers, vloggers, bloggers will be here too, and soon you won’t be here alone anymore. In a city that still wakes up with the old ladies greeting you through the window and a bag with fresh bread is still hanging in the outside of the doors, some things never change. Oh, but now you posted a photo and everyone will ask you to go there in your tours and take photos of the street and publisher them in social media... Well, you need to go there on your own and find for yourself and explore as you used to when there were no iPhones and YouTubers. Travelling is not about following trends, or copying. You can’t feel the same as I did when I first found about this one. Traveling is about you only. It’s a bit selfish, but I travel to change myself and to learn and adapt, through culture, food, music, landscape, I become what I see and everything I experience is part of me now. As an adult, I’m still learning and trying like if I was a young kid. Travel, explore and get lost! —————————— #Λισαβόνα #Лиссабо́н #リス #里斯本 #里斯本

The oldest house in Lisbon (supposedly), located at Rua dos Cegos, Lilliputian in size, crooked and neglected but gigantic in character. Still standing after years and years, could easily be one of the 20 few houses that survived the 1755 earthquake and are still standing. There are others in Alfama and Mouraria district. Do you know of any other of these old houses? #1755 —————————— #Λισαβόνα #Лиссабо́н #リス #里斯本 #里斯本

The Elevator of Santa Justa. The only remaining public elevator in Lisbon, working since 1901. A Neogothic structure from the genius mind of Raul Mesnier de Ponsard. He was also responsible for the elevators of Nazaré, Bom Jesus (Braga) and all the old funiculars in Lisbon (Lavra, Glória Bica) and many of the extinct elevators like Biblioteca, Estrela, Graça among others.
He wasn’t a disciple of Eiffel as the majority would think, although I’m sure they would have a nice chat if they were together for a moment. Our Gotham style city wonder needs someone to look after.

Queluz, the overcrowded suburban city was already colonised centuries ago. Although we usually track its foundation to the Arabian period (VII - XII centuries) the name Queluz, could eventually from “Lu” or “Lou”, God of the Sun for the Lusitani tribes that inhabited the territory we now call Portugal in the period of the arrival of the Romans (Lusitania was the province name during Roman times).
Lusitania is composed of two words: Citânia and Lu. Citânia means a fortified city (from the Keltic word “Cytan”). Another theory would say that the name Queluz comes from the Arab “Câ” (deep valley) and “Llûs” (almond tree), simply meaning “Almond trees valley”. What do we know… —————————— #Λισαβόνα #Лиссабо́н #リス #里斯本 #里斯本

Palácio da Vila, Sintra, UNESCO heritage site since 1995, and the only surviving Portuguese Medieval Palace (although taken from the oficial site, I’m not 100% sure on this statement), is currently under renovation. Mr Dheo mural at Bairro dos Francos, Ramalde, Porto took me by surprise. It was a quiet Sunday morning in Porto and on my way to another long day (driving almost 400km) I nearly stopped the car in the middle of the road to appreciate this awesome mural. Mr Dheo was born close to Porto (at Vila Nova de Gaia) in 1985, and started his interest in Graffiti at age 15. His photorealistic style always impresses me, and we can easily spot his interventions in the suburbs of Lisbon in cities like Cacém. Always powerful and beautiful.

Incoming storm at Foz, Porto. Although almost in May, another storm is arriving in the next few days. Snow, thunderstorms with some local heavy showers and cold nights. April was always like this, but never this cold. Last week felt like summer, now it’s winter again.

Located at Nazaré (1:20h from Lisbon to the North), this mural was a collaboration of the French artist YZ Yseult and Portuguese artist Tamara Alves. “I:REVERSIBLE” is a tribute to the ancestral (mostly feminine) practice of fish drying in Nazaré. A traditional technique in risk of disappearing. In Nazaré, although tourists will find it disgusting and a bit disturbing, fish is sun dried in the open at the beach. Species from octopus to stingray can be found. You simply need to boil it and add a good olive oil - it’s delicious on top of a toast. Fisherman will eat it just like this “raw”. Food preservation was poor and this ancient technique was a survival technique. —————————— #Λισαβόνα #Лиссабо́н #リス #里斯本 #里斯本

Good morning dear travelers! Here’s the first Sundog of the year - a beautiful sight at Alcântara neighbourhood. According to the site Weather.gov: (…)”Sundogs are colored spots of light that develop due to the refraction of light through ice crystals. They are located approximately 22 degrees either left, right, or both, from the sun, depending on where the ice crystals are present. The colors usually go from red closest to the sun, out to blue on the outside of the sundog. Sundogs are also known as mock suns or parhelia, which means “with the sun”.(…)” —————————— #Λισαβόνα #Лиссабо́н #リス #里斯本 #里斯本

Mouraria, neglected, mysterious and always connected with everything bad and nasty that a city has to offer - specially at night.. A cancer in the heart of town. True? Despite the fame of a red light district (some Fado Houses were brothels), there was crime, prostitution and drugs this part of town changed a lot and has several secret spots worth a visit. The whole area was poor, unsafe and it didn’t look good, specially at dawn. the neighbourhood was always in the wrong side, under the more trendy and “clean” Graça neighbourhood, side by side with the historical Rossio and Figueira squares, Mouraria was always the ugly duckling. After a few years of reorganisation, several places were shut down, others started and the place was revamped. Do I miss the old days? Nah… no one wants 80’s rough and dirty Lisbon back. This is Lisbon in a picture, the old Pátio where kids played football and hide and seek, the washboard where our grannies washed our clothes and the crooked poor houses where families lived a simple life with a black & white tv as the center of the world. Life in the 80’s was simple, tough but simple. ————————————————————— #Λισαβόνα #Лиссабо́н #リスボン #里斯本 —————————————————————
