I am on a specialist council with 7 others where we are working to pass a new law to guarantee that all women can spend 6 months with full pay at home with their babies to support exclusive breastfeeding as formally recommended by the World Health Organisation. This was also the recommendation of a report (supported by WHO and the DGS) we published in 2015 called the World Breastfeeding Trends Initiative which is the largest international comparative interactive data base in the world, a report we will be re-doing in September this year.

This is our 2nd round at parliament debating prolonging maternity leave in Portugal. 2 years ago we managed over 34 000 signatures but we need more to be able to debate this subject further to ultimately pass it as a law.

This benefits everyone!!!!! Breastfeeding supports better health for mothers and babies, causes less of a foot print on the environment (less plastic waste with bottles etc and Co2 emissions than formula production), increases GDP, higher IQ’s, boosts our economy, saves money for the DGS, less household costs, lowers cancer rates and non-communicable diseases etc…..the list can go on.

It was almost 17yrs ago that I breastfed for the 1st time.

I had just turned 20,(a little young and still clueless) however, it was the most instinctual, beautiful and natural thing I ever did. I started within seconds of an (unplanned (I wanted a cesarian because it looked easier :D ) ) natural and un-medicated hospital birth.

From start to finish, it was THE MOST POWERFUL experience of my life!

I miss it..........

My 7yr old is the centre of my 89yr old grandmothers world and my 89yr old grandmother is the centre of my 7yr old's world.
