O 25 de abril de 1974, conhecido como o "Dia da Liberdade" em Portugal, marcou um momento histórico crucial na história do país. Este dia foi o auge da Revolução dos Cravos, um levantamento pacífico que pôs fim a quase cinco décadas de ditadura autoritária conhecida como Estado Novo, liderada por António de Oliveira Salazar e, mais tarde, por Marcelo Caetano.

A Revolução dos Cravos foi liderada principalmente por militares de patente média, que se rebelaram contra o regime autoritário e exigiram a restauração das liberdades democráticas, dos direitos humanos e da igualdade social. O movimento recebeu o amplo apoio da população civil, que saiu às ruas em uma mostra de solidariedade e desejo de mudança.

Em 25 de abril de 1974, as forças militares rebeldes lançaram uma operação cuidadosamente planejada, que incluiu a ocupação de pontos-chave em Lisboa e a captura de altos funcionários do regime. Um dos momentos mais emblemáticos da revolução foi quando civis e soldados se uniram na icónica Praça do Município de Lisboa, onde os soldados colocaram cravos vermelhos nas armas de seus rifles como símbolo de paz e solidariedade.

Como resultado da Revolução dos Cravos, o regime autoritário foi derrubado e Portugal iniciou uma transição pacífica para a democracia. Foi estabelecido um novo governo provisório e foram convocadas eleições democráticas, que levaram ao estabelecimento de um sistema político pluralista e à redação de uma nova constituição em 1976.

O 25 de abril é celebrado todos os anos em Portugal como um dia de comemoração nacional e um lembrete da importância da liberdade, da democracia e dos direitos humanos.
