We got 4 chicks 1mo ago. Our intention was to explore raising our own meat, but def getting eggs and ecological services. Here's what we learned since:
- Don't name your chickens, or you will likely start getting some soul screams to stop eating meat asap
- No way we are ever killing Fenix, Buckbeak, Dodo and Peninhas Magicas
- Did you know its impossible to find non GMO chicken feed (grains) anywhwere?
- 'We are going to try to grow our own grains' said the crazy family as they realize it really doesnt make any sense to use our land and energy to feed the chickens when we could be using it to feed ourselves
- We're still not sure if baby chicks can forage or should just eat milled grain, but ours werent used to foraging at 1 month so we thought, lets do it gradually
- Chicks dont like gradually and they LOVE foraging. They have been free range and we just lock them up at night since week 2
- They took time to adjust to the foraged plants and bugs, 1 of them was sick for a few days but bounced back with no intervention. All had diarrhea for a week. It got better as they foraged more, and now their poops are amazing and solid lol
- They love roaming and go 15meters from their coop now, they chose 3 fave spots for naps and dirt baths, they like to go home for a while at lunch time, specially when its hotter, and have some grain and siesta
- Chicks in moderation wont eat all your grasses or cultures, they have ruined a few tiny plants but otherwise are eating through soil coverage very sparingly, the only places they seem to destroy plants is their bath spots
- Chickens are smart, loving and very curious, they dont like to be touched or held too much anymore (the first few days they fooled us) but they love being near us and to climb onto us, and to eat from our hands
- Our chicks are like a pack of wolves, always together but always fighting or competing with each other. Its pretty fun to see one tak

Yes, we need wood but explored sustainably in every sense of the word 🌳
In the forest for example we only cut down wood when the ecossystem could benefit from more light ✨️ and we repurpose all our wood or leave it to decompose naturally also creating habitat for fauna. For now we feel its the most harmonic way to steward this land but we are always learning.
