Have you ever seen a risso dolphin underwater? 🐬 ✨ This is one of the 5 species of dolphin you can see and swim with in Pico Island 🤿 🎇 Risso’s dolphins are these cool marine creatures that you can find swimming in oceans around the world. They’re pretty unique-looking, with a robust body, no beak, and a lot of scars on their skin from all the adventures they’ve had in the deep blue sea. Here are some fun facts about them: Distinct Appearance: Risso’s dolphins are mostly gray, but as they age, they get whiter, and those scars I mentioned earlier become more prominent. So, older ones can look almost completely white! Size Matters: They’re not small, but they’re not the biggest dolphins out there either. On average, they can reach around 10-12 feet in length. Dive Masters: Risso’s dolphins are known for their impressive diving skills. They can go deep, like really deep, sometimes over 1,000 meters! That’s like diving off a skyscraper, but in water. Diet Diversification: When it comes to food, they’re pretty open-minded. They eat a variety of stuff, including squid and fish. So, you can say they have a diverse palate. Where to Find Them: You can spot Risso’s dolphins in different parts of the world. Pico’s Vineyards 🍇… Explore the lands where one of the best wines in Portugal is born 🍷🇵🇹 Consult us for our excursions in land 🌋 The basalt rock found all across Pico has been used for centuries to construct the drystone walls for which the island has become famous. These form a complex network which cover a large proportion of the island, providing shelter for the vineyards. The walls (“paredes” or “murinhos”) and the vineyard plots they cover (“currais”) have been recognized as an important part of human history, and were registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. The type of dark stone found here is also present on the island of Terceira, where the rounded, smooth, biscuit-like shape gives rise to the name of its wine denomination, Biscoitos. Volcanic soils are known to produce grapes (and therefore wines) with higher acidity than most other soils, meaning that Pico’s grapes are typically well-suited to produce fortified wines, or at least wines intended for longer-term cellaring. Because of this, Pico wines benefit from a balance of acidity and sugars typically not achieved in other Azores vineyards.
