Here at CW Azores we have been enjoying our time out on flat seas along side beautiful S***m whales and Sowerby’s beaked whales, some of the most fascinating deep divers of the Azores !
These summer days have also been giving us the opportunity to explore our amazing coasts.

From size, shape, pigmentation and scars, the tails of some species of whales have unique details, and through these patterns it is possible to tell individuals apart. This is the case for some of the species we have sighted over the last few days, such as humpback whales and s***m whales!

Over the past few days we had stunning sighthings of s***m whales and pilot whales!Between their foraging deep dives, these animals allowed us to observe them during their surface intervals before their next attempt to snack on deep-sea preys.

🐋 Exciting news from the sea! Yesterday morning, in the waters off the north coast of Pico, we had a great encounter with a Humpback whale spotted by our 'vigia' Marcelo. To our surprise, this particular individual boasted an unusual skin coloration, slightly brighter than most humpbacks we have had the privilege to observe.

Our guess is that it might be due to a viral skin condition. Despite this, we remain optimistic that this majestic animal will not only survive but also continue to thrive! 🙏

S***m whales display fascinating social behaviours that are amazing for us to observe. Females S***m whales, juveniles and calves of both sexes are typically found in social units.
During this whale watching tour we got to see a group of up to 9 individuals on the surface and, for sure, there were more individuals deep diving beneath us.
Female S***m whales can dive for up to 45 minutes and as deep as 2,000 m. Adult males can dive for well over an hour. This means that mothers often leave their calves on the surface of the water with the other females in their group. When this happens, the other females babysit and nurse the mothers' offspring while they are gone to feed on squid - a behaviour called allosuckling (i.e., providing milk to calves that are not their own).
This was a fantastic opportunity to observe these behaviours, as with this social unit we got to see the trust and strong bonds between females, calves and subadults!!

The closer we get to the summer, the more we notice a decline in baleen whale sightings. However, that certainly doesn't mean less fun in our trips! As long as the weather allows, the mid-Atlantic has always beautiful sightings of resident species to offer.
Last Saturday we spent a lovely morning contemplating a pod of Risso's dolphins, a few S***m whales and a mystery fish fin...👀
Any clues to which species the fin in the last photo belongs?

We are constantly amazed by the wonders of the animal kingdom when we venture outdoors. Some creatures leap, others take flight, and some simply float - but watch out for those stingers! And then there are those remarkable divers who plunge to incredible depths...

Patrizia - Tita for everybody - left us exactly one year ago. While the Beluga is a strictly arctic cetacean and cannot be seen in the Azores, it is the species she loved the most and always wanted to see. Legend has it that Tita is now one of them, and a caring Beluga is protecting us out at sea.
💙In Loving Memory of Patrizia Villa, our CW Angel💙
