During the Inquisition, Jews in Porto had to hide their faith to survive. Yet, in secret, they
preserved their traditions through hidden codes and practices.

Some homes had concealed spaces for religious ceremonies, and objects like seven-branched candelabras were hidden in furniture or walls. Messages in code were used to organize clandestine gatherings, showcasing the resilience of the Jewish community.

Today, Porto honors this silent resistance, keeping these stories alive.

💊 The Healers of Medieval Porto 🌿

In medieval Porto, Jews were known as experts in medicine and botany. Many served as physicians and pharmacists, using advanced knowledge of medicinal plants to treat the population.

The Jewish community also played a significant role in the trade of spices and remedies brought from the East. These goods were not only valuable but also contributed to the development of healthcare and commerce in the region.

Discover the Remarkable Story of Dona Gracia in The Girl from Lisbon by Guiora Barak

As we light the Hanukkah candles this year, we remember the miracles of resilience, bravery, and faith that define our heritage. Dona Gracia was a trailblazer, a Jewish leader during one of history’s most challenging times. In the face of persecution, she used her wealth, influence, and unwavering spirit to rescue hundreds of Conversos (Jews forced to convert to Christianity) and provide them safe passage to lands of freedom. Her story is a testament to the power of courage and community, values we hold dear during Hanukkah.

This Hanukkah, as we celebrate the triumph of light over darkness, let Dona Gracia's legacy inspire us. Her unwavering determination mirrors the miracle of the Maccabees, reminding us of the strength within us to overcome adversity and illuminate the world around us.

Menasseh ben Israel (1604–1657) was a distinguished rabbi, scholar, and diplomat of the Portuguese-Jewish community in Amsterdam. Born Manoel Dias Soeiro in Lisbon, he fled to the Netherlands with his family to escape the Inquisition. In Amsterdam, he founded the city's first Hebrew printing press in 1626, significantly contributing to Jewish literature and learning.

A prolific writer, Menasseh authored numerous works on theology, philosophy, and Kabbalah, engaging in intellectual exchanges with prominent figures of his time. His most notable achievement was his successful petition to Oliver Cromwell for the readmission of Jews to England, from which they had been expelled since 1290. This diplomatic effort was instrumental in re-establishing the Jewish presence in England.

Menasseh ben Israel's legacy endures as a testament to his dedication to Jewish scholarship and his pivotal role in advocating for Jewish rights in Europe.

A Global Initiative: Supporting Marranos in Rediscovering Judaism

Did you know that an international committee has been established to help Marranos reconnect with their Jewish heritage? This inspiring initiative brings together historians, religious leaders, and cultural advocates to support descendants of Jews forced to convert to Christianity during the Inquisition, providing them with the resources and guidance to return to Judaism if they so wish.

The committee works to create a welcoming environment, offering educational programs, access to synagogues, and assistance in navigating their spiritual journey. It's a significant step in acknowledging a painful chapter in history while fostering renewal and belonging for those seeking to reclaim their Jewish identity.

This initiative not only strengthens individual connections to Judaism but also celebrates the enduring resilience of Jewish communities worldwide. It’s a profound example of healing, hope, and heritage coming together.
