We know that all travel guides and maybe all your friends who went to Porto, talk about St. Francis’ church as being a must-see “golden cave”. What if we told you that it is not the only one and there’s a much better-kept secret waiting to be discovered by you?
We’re talking about Saint Claire church (Igreja de Santa Clara)!

The church has a long history dating back to the 15th century, founded by Queen Isabel of Portugal. The original convent associated with the church was established for the Order of Saint Clare, a Franciscan religious order for women.
It features a blend of architectural styles, reflecting various periods of construction and renovation. The original Gothic-style structure has undergone modifications over the centuries, including Baroque and Rococo elements added during renovations in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Although the convent associated with the church no longer exists, visitors can still explore the remnants of the convent's cloisters, which provide a peaceful retreat from the bustling city streets. The cloisters feature arcades, columns, and other architectural elements characteristic of medieval and Renaissance convent architecture.

𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐮𝐦 (𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐮 𝐍𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐨 𝐀𝐳𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐣𝐨):
The National Tile Museum is dedicated to the art of Portuguese tiles, known as azulejos. Housed in the former convent of Madre de Deus, built in 1509 at the orders of queen Leonor, the museum showcases a vast collection of decorative ceramic tiles dating from the 15th century to the present day, including a wide range of tiles, from historical and religious themes to ornamental and abstract designs. Visitors can explore the evolution of tile-making techniques and styles in Portugal over the centuries.
Notable highlights of the museum include the stunning azulejo panels depicting scenes from Portuguese history, mythological stories, and religious subjects. The museum also features a replica of a typical Portuguese tile-clad interior.

𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐮𝐦 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐀𝐫𝐭 (𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐮 𝐍𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐞 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐚):
Since its foundation, the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga has been housed at the palace built in the late 17th century at the behest of the first Count of Alvor, after his return from India, where he had served as Viceroy. The palace remained in the hands of the family until the mid-18th century, when it became the property of a brother of the Marquis of Pombal, Paulo de Carvalho, before becoming the residence of a rich diamond trader, Dutch consul in Portugal, Daniel Gildemeester, who sponsored major improvement work to the building’s interior spaces.
Being a typical example of the Portuguese civil architecture of that period, the palace has a long façade running parallel to the street and a highly simple design with the only decoration being its ornamental baroque doorways.
Created in 1884, the National Museum of Ancient Art is the home to the most important Portuguese public collection of art, ranging from paintings to sculpture, and gold and silverware, as well as decorative arts from Europe, Africa and the Far East.
The museum's collection includes paintings, sculptures, decorative arts, and other objects representing various artistic movements and periods. Highlights include works by renowned Portuguese artists such as Nuno Gonçalves as well as European masters like Hieronymus Bosch, Rembrandt, Rubens, and Dürer.

𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐆𝐮𝐥𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐮𝐦 (𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐮 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐆𝐮𝐥𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐚𝐧):
The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum is named after the Armenian oil magnate Calouste Gulbenkian, who bequeathed his extensive art collection to the Portuguese state upon his death. The museum features a diverse collection of art spanning 5000 years of history, different cultures, periods, and styles, including Egyptian, Greco-Roman, Islamic, Asian, and European art, as well as decorative arts, textiles, and jewelry. It showcases works by prominent artists such as Rembrandt, Rubens, Monet, and René Lalique.
The museum's collection includes ancient artifacts, illuminated manuscripts, sculptures, paintings, and decorative arts objects representing various artistic traditions and civilizations. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events.

These museums are integral parts of Lisbon's cultural landscape, offering visitors opportunities to explore diverse aspects of art, history, and heritage. Each museum provides a unique perspective on Portugal's cultural identity and artistic legacy.

𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐋𝐃 𝐕𝐈𝐒𝐈𝐓 𝐈𝐍𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐀𝐃 𝐈𝐍… 𝐋𝐈𝐒𝐁𝐎𝐍 (𝐁𝐄𝐋É𝐌 𝐄𝐃𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍)
This week we invite you to discover the Ajuda National Palace, a jewel of Lisbon’s cultural heritage and a great option to avoid the crazy crowds lining up at the Jerónimos Monastery!

- 𝘏𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺:
The construction of the Ajuda Palace began in 1796 during the reign of Queen Maria I of Portugal and was intended to serve as a royal residence. However, the palace was never fully completed during the monarchy due to various interruptions, including the Napoleonic invasions of Portugal in the early 19th century and subsequent financial constraints.
Despite its incomplete state, the Ajuda Palace was occasionally used as a royal residence by members of the Portuguese royal family, including Queen Maria II and King Luís I. However, the palace's primary function shifted over time, serving as a venue for state events, official receptions, and ceremonial functions.

- 𝘈𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯:
The palace's design reflects the neoclassical style popular during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It was initially designed by Portuguese architect Manuel Caetano de Sousa, who drew inspiration from classical Greek and Roman architecture. The façade features Ionic columns and a grandiose pediment, while the interior showcases ornate decorations and intricate details.
Its collections include remarkable works of goldsmithery, tapestry, furniture, painting, sculpture, porcelain, glass, engraving, and photography from various sources, mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries, making it one of the most important decorative arts museums in the country. Highlights include works by authors such as El Greco, Greuze, Géricault, and Stiler.

- 𝘔𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘶𝘮:
The Ajuda National Palace was converted into a museum in the 20th century, opening its doors to the public in 1968. Visitors can explore the palace's lavishly decorated rooms, which have been preserved to showcase the splendor of royal life in the 19th century. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events.
Today, this museum is the only royal palace in Lisbon that can be visited and that still preserves its rooms with the authenticity of the 19th century.
In the same building, you can visit the Royal Treasure Museum, which houses the royal treasury with the jewels of the Portuguese crown and the goldsmithery used in civil and religious ceremonies, as well as the most imposing 18th-century European royal tableware.

Surrounding the palace is the Ajuda Botanical Garden (Jardim Botânico da Ajuda), which was originally established as part of the palace grounds. The garden features a diverse collection of plants, including exotic species from around the world, and provides a peaceful retreat for visitors to enjoy.

The 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐮𝐦 (Museu Nacional dos Coches) in Lisbon, Portugal, is one of the most visited museums in the country. It houses one of the finest collections of historical carriages in the world. Here are some key points about the museum:

- 𝘓𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯:
The National Coach Museum is in the Belém district of Lisbon, near the Tagus River. The museum's building, designed by Brazilian architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha along with Portuguese architect Ricardo Bak Gordon, is a modern structure that provides an elegant setting for the historic carriages.

- 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯:
The museum's collection consists of ceremonial and promenade vehicles from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, including carriages, coaches, berlins, sedan chairs, and other horse-drawn vehicles. Many of these carriages were used by Portuguese royalty, nobility, and other prominent figures. The collection showcases the craftsmanship and artistry of carriage makers from various European countries.
Some of the notable carriages in the museum's collection include the magnificent 18th-century Portuguese Royal Coach, which is adorned with intricate gilded woodwork and elaborate paintings depicting historical and mythological scenes. Another highlight is the Coach of Pope Clement XI, an exquisite example of papal transport from the early 18th century.

- 𝘏𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺:
The National Coach Museum was founded in 1905 by Queen Amélia, the last queen consort of Portugal, with the intention of preserving and showcasing Portugal's rich carriage heritage. Over the years, the museum's collection has grown through acquisitions and donations, becoming a significant cultural institution in Lisbon.
In recent years, the museum underwent a major renovation and expansion project, which was completed in 2015. The new facilities provide improved exhibition spaces, visitor amenities, and conservation facilities, enhancing the overall experience for visitors.
Overall, the National Coach Museum offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into the history of transportation and royal culture in Portugal, making it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and anyone interested in exploring Lisbon's cultural heritage.

May this be of your interest, we suggest combining this visit with a visit to the nearby 𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗿𝘁.
Intimately bound up with the traditions and customs of the 18th century Portuguese court, the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art provides a return to this past on a veritable journey through time at the pace of the elegant and precise “dance” of the thoroughbred Lusitano horses bred by the Coudelaria de Alter stud farm.
With regular presentations in the Henrique Calado Riding Ring, on Calçada da Ajuda (Belém), the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art stands out as national heritage and endowed with the objective of promoting the teaching, practice and global dissemination of traditional Portuguese equestrian art, a unique cultural heritage.

You'll find remarkable properties across Portugal that have embraced eco-friendly initiatives. Some have transitioned to solar power (fun fact: Portugal is a pioneer in renewable energy production), while others have organic local farms and farm-to-table restaurants. They've also implemented waste recycling programs and utilized sustainable building materials.

Now, Portugal may not immediately come to mind as a nature lover's paradise, but we have a national park and over 25 natural parks and reserves waiting to be explored. These breathtaking areas offer fantastic opportunities for hiking, biking, canoeing, and wildlife observation. The best part? You won't have to embark on strenuous journeys from the cities to reach these parks. For instance, you can reach Arrábida Natural Park in just an hour from Lisbon or make your way to the Peneda-Gerês National Park in 2 hours and 30 minutes from Porto!

But sustainable travel in Portugal encompasses much more. It's about immersing yourself in the local culture. Think dining at those charming restaurants tucked away in quaint little towns, where the owner is also the chef and the vegetables come fresh from their or their neighbor’s garden. It's about embarking on wine-tasting adventures at local wineries, some of which follow organic and biodynamic farming methods. It's about connecting with the local community, learning how to bake delicious pastéis de nata (custard tartlets) with a local, or venturing into the high mountains to master the art of traditional cheese-making at a family-owned factory.

And, of course, it's about reaching out to us for guidance on how you can contribute to sustainable tourism. We're more than happy to point you in the right direction and ensure your journey in Portugal aligns beautifully with your eco-conscious values!
