🔹 When you think of Portugal, colourful tiles come to mind as quickly as the traditional food and the beautiful beaches.

🔸 “Azulejos” is the Portuguese word for tiles, and these beautiful tiles are part of the Portuguese history, culture, and traditions. They come in different forms and are made of painted ceramics.

🔹 Most of tiles combine the colours white and blue (mainly) because these colours were considered very fashionable at the time of the Age of Discoveries (from 15th to the 18th centuries). Plus, the blue colour was seen as a synonym of power and wealth, which is why you can easily find them on important monuments all over the country.

Today is World Heritage Day also known as International Day for Monuments and Sites and was first established in 1982 to increase awareness of the diversity and importance of cultural heritage and to encourage its preservation. 🏰

🔸 Heritage is something that is passed down from one generation to another, and it can take many forms, such as cultural heritage, natural heritage, or historical heritage.

🔸 The theme proposed for this day celebrated on 18 April is “Heritage Changes”.

Tomar is a charming town in central Portugal, known as the Knights Templar City as it was once the seat of the Order of the Knights Templar.

There are plenty of reasons to visit Évora, starting with the fact that it is a museum-city, whose roots date back to Roman times.

The historic centre of Évora, capital of the Alentejo Province, in Portugal, counts with more than 20 centuries of history. Évora was considered a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1986, due to its spectacular old wall, the Agua de Prata Aqueduct, medieval buildings like the cathedral, convents, palaces, churches, and squares.

Coimbra is one of the oldest cities in Portugal and became its 1st capital in 1129, shortly after the creation of the Kingdom of Portugal.

Coimbra is often called “the city of knowledge” for being the seat of the oldest University in Portugal and one of the oldest in Europe.

Guimarães is one of Portugal’s most important historical destinations and the city is known as “The Cradle” because of its castle, which was the base from which Afonso Henriques, the country’s first king, successfully defeated the Spaniards in 1128 and set the foundations for the new kingdom of Portugal.

Founded in 296 BCE by Carthaginians, Braga was named “Bracara Augusta” by the Romans.

🎖 The city’s main landmarks include a 12th-century Cathedral, the 17th-century church of Santa Cruz, a library containing many rare books and manuscripts, and the remarkable Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, which is characterized by its architectural 18th-century staircase. This beautiful sanctuary visited by thousands of pilgrims every year.
