A huge component of “finding my way back” from severe burnout as a kidney doctor was understanding that the white coat was just one of my identities.

Most importantly the white coat wasn’t even my authentic self.

Being a healer was.

BLOG #2: My Closet Full of Identities

Years before I could figure out that my white coat was just an identity that I could take on and off, I became a mom-to-be. At that time, I wasn’t prepared to be a mom. You see, I still had grand dreams of being a superstar in academic medicine, heading up a renal division in some prestigious university and that didn’t fit with my bulging belly. That thought pattern was firmly reinforced by the “helpful” statements made by my male mentors. “Well you can’t be in academics and be a mom.” “She might have been able to pull off one kid but her career is ruined now that she’s going to have a second.” The lack of any senior females in our division was the exclamation mark to those factual statements and I would always pull my white coat tight to hide my femininity, the curse of being XX, a female, when striving for academic glory.

But in truth, I had always wanted to be a mom and I realized that if I was going to be a halfway decent one, my 80+ hour weeks (along with my loving neglect of my incredibly understanding husband) weren’t going to cut it.

I had to figure out how to switch from my white coat to my home identity.

To truly leave Dr. Bogaert, kidney doctor, NIH scientist behind when I entered my house.

That’s when I realized that having a ritual -a process just like the one you use to don your surgical coat and gloves- was essential to being able to switch.

HELLO!! It has been a while since I’ve said hello and as we have many new followers, I thought it was about time…. My name is Tara. I’m London born and bred but always cosmopolitan at heart, with a Norwegian mum and 13 years French education at the french Lycee in London - although I’ve barely written french since I sat the Bac. I can most regularly be found with my nose in a book, and I love to hear your recommendations so do please come and follow us at @casafuzettabookclub too. The best way to get me to put my book down is to show me a puppy. 🐾 2025 will be our 30th wedding anniversary. Yikes - @jonathantod , how did that happen? 2024 is 10 years since we started work on the restoration of @casafuzetta - if your nerves are strong, check out our central pin to get a sense of what was involved. Although we’ve hosted over 175 yoga retreats and were thrilled for @condenasttraveller to name us amongst their top yoga retreat venues in the world, I have to confess to having a very patchy practice on my mat. Things I’ve loved since embarking on our Casa Fuzetta journey… making so many new friends (including @elena.freedomseeker who took the first and last photos in this reel), matching my wardrobe to the colours of the city, learning to paddle board (luckily no photos), daily visits to the Olhao market, honing my BBQ skills, trusting my instincts, embracing all things La-Eva (@lifelaeva ) and painting chickens* After so many comments about the trip I made to Paris with @days_of_dais_ in June, I’ll try to share top tips from the trip I’m going on next week with @will.tod to Lisbon and Porto. We have some great foodie treats booked in and will be going full tourist for Will’s first visits before we head down for a blissful few weeks @casafuzetta. Keep an eye out in next week’s stories. ONE MORE SLEEP… until we are back at Casa Fuzetta. I can’t wait to feel the warmth of the sun on my cheek and the swoosh of air as the racing pigeons fly by. The colours and scents of Olhao’s markets on the waterfront beckon, as does the chance to walk barefoot along miles of beautiful beaches. And I anticipate many an hour will be spent catching up with friends around the long tables on our kitchen terrace. Our Story

Casa Fuzetta was originally built by Dr Carlos Fuzeta, a local lawyer, philosopher and philanthropist. In June 2016, loving and extensive renovation works were completed to transform this classical gentleman's residence into a unique and magical private home. In May 2017 it became available to rent on an exclusive basis for groups up to 24 to enjoy the everyday magic of Olhao. The house is ideal for large / extended groups of family and friends seeking a high-end, yet relaxed, private and intimate location for time together, special occasions, retreats and/or immersive experiences. We also welcome photo shoots. As the Algarve is said to enjoy 300 days of sunshine per year. We’re a wonderful year round location. In December 2018, the temperature even reached 23c. We’re just a short fifteen minute drive from Faro airport, which itself is less than 3hrs from London. It doesn’t get much easier !
