YES Meeting was born in 2006 as a result of a pioneer idea of a student from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto. His goal was to gather students from the biomedical areas as well as professional researchers from reference centers and give them the opportunity to compare and discuss their works. The main goal of this project has been ever since to provide students the feeling that t

heir work is not only given the proper value but also recognition from the scientific world. Since its first edition, the congress has been growing and in the last years we can say that it has taken off. In what concerns to the scientific program, the meeting includes:
1. Simposiums held by worldwide known scientists from the most important research centers in the world;
2.Presentations by students of their research works made in their own universities on one of the following six themes: Public Health & Medical Informatics, Neurosciences, Molecular Biology & Physiology, Oncology & Immunology, Clinical Medicine and Surgery;
3.Interactive workshops on multiple themes relation both to basic medicine like human anatomy, obesity, diabetes and clinical medicine such as Eye Surgery, Laparoscopic Surgery, Hematology, Bioengineering among many others. Besides the scientific aspect, there is also a social programme which includes a guided visit to the historic sights of Porto city a other places with turistic interest. It is given the opportunity to the participants to taste the traditional Portuguese cuisine and there is a night reserved to a concert of Tunas Académicas da Faculdade de Medicina as well as Grupo de Fados in order to promote Fado, recently considered Intangible Cultural Heritage. Finally, the meeting comes to an end with a farewell dinner in which the prizes of best research works are given to the students.

Are you ready for our Biotechnology Session speakers? The answer is YES!

Prof. Dr. Liliana Teixeira is the co-founder and scientific lead of the Organ-on-Chip Center Twente, as well as board member of the European Organ-on-Chip Society (EUROoCS).

During her talk, Dr. Teixeira will focus on how Organ-on-Chip technology is transforming the way we study diseases and develop new therapies. You will also discover how miniaturized organ models can effectively mimic human (patho-)physiology, offering insights into disease processes and streamlining drug discovery.

We will also count on the presence of Dr. Waldemar Hoffmann. Dr. Hoffmann holds a MSc in Bioengineering and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering and has more than 10 years of experience in the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

During his talk, titled "Shaping the standard of care to save more patients in need of an organ", Dr. Hoffmann will present how he and his team aim at solving the global issue that is the lack of available livers for transplantation via long term normothermic machine perfusion of organ grafts to allow physicians to evaluate organ quality, enable treatment of sprecific cases of liver diseases (e.g. steatosis, cancer) and thereby replenish the organ pool.

We cannot wait to have these experts with us!

This year, in the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences Laureate we will have the pleasure of having Professor Pascal Mayer with us!

Professor Pascal is a pioneering figure in DNA analysis and drug development, with a PhD in macromolecular biophysics from the University of Strasbourg. He conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Ottawa and CNRS’s Centre de Recherche Paul Pascal, where he propelled DNA sequencing and separation techniques to new heights.

In 1996, Professor Pascal joined Glaxo-Wellcome’s research Center, where he initiated his founding work on DNA sequencing on self-forming DNA colonies, laying the groundwork for Next Generation Sequencing (NGS).

The impact of Professor Mayer's discovery cannot be overstated. NGS has transformed genomics, biology, and medicine, enabling unprecedented speed and cost efficiency in genetic analysis. Beyond revolutionizing traditional methods, NGS drives advances in personalized medicine and accelerates the discovery of genetic markers, shaping the future of healthcare and scientific innovation.

In a very relaxed environment, you will be able to experience and learn the correct techniques of splinting and casting a limb. Say YES to our “Chest Tube - Mastering It!” workshop! Imagine you have a patient with a pneumothorax and time is running out. Do you need to insert a chest tube? Although it may seem a very simple procedure, a tube thoracostomy can easily lead to life-threatening complications, especially when not performed appropriately. In this session you will not only be able to learn the fundamental principles of chest tube insertion, but also to put your hands at work and start practicing! Say YES to our Cervical Arthrodesis Workshop! On this year’s edition, we could not leave behind our amazing Workshops! On the 16th YES Meeting, you will have the opportunity to attend several workshops. Take a look at one of them: Cervical Arthrodesis! In this workshop, participants will be able to perform spinal stabilizations in sawbone models. This surgical technique has proven to be effective in improving the quality of life of many people, and therefore, we are giving our participants a unique opportunity to get their hands on, and start practicing!
