Even with the sea becoming rougher, we had very good sightings.
We saw our "summer dolphins" the Atlantic Spotted dolphins, our residents Bottlenose dolphins and s***m whales, including the most famous male of São Miguel - Mr. Liable!

Did you know the s***m whales are the loudest animal and it's so loud that, hypothetically, can shatter your eardrums. Their sound can reach 230 decibels.

Nestled in the heart of São Miguel Island, 𝙇𝙖𝙜𝙤𝙖 𝙙𝙤 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙜𝙧𝙤 is one of the lesser-known treasures of the Azores. This serene crater lake, formed by volcanic activity, sits 485 𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙨𝙚𝙖 𝙡𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙡 and spans 500 𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙙𝙞𝙖𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙧. Surrounded by vibrant, untouched forests, it is a tranquil retreat for anyone seeking nature’s pure beauty.

The lake’s 𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙡𝙙-𝙜𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙬𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨, caused by algae and mineral deposits, create a perfect reflection of the surrounding trees, making it a photographer’s dream! 📸

Daily Sightings: September 22, 2024

✅ S***m whales

✅ Atlantic spotted dolphins

On our whale watching trip, the morning started with calm, glassy seas and a pod of playful common dolphins. As we ventured west, we encountered s***m whales. Some boats spotted up to seven together, while others were treated to the sight of a massive male, his enormous head and powerful blow leaving everyone in awe. In the afternoon, we came across a different group of s***m whales, spread across the area. They were preparing for deep dives, gracefully lifting their tails before disappearing into the deep. It was an unforgettable experience!

Did you know that there is a dimorphism between the female and the male s***m whale? Adult males are bigger, so when we have one in the area we can clearly identify it.

Did you know that São Miguel, the largest island of the Azores, is home to stunning 𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙡 𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙨 called “Lombadas”? These are lush, green valleys, hidden away in the island's breathtaking interior.

Lombadas offer hiking trails through 𝙫𝙞𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙨, 𝙘𝙧𝙮𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙡-𝙘𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙧 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙢𝙨, and 𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙛𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙨. Whether you're seeking tranquility or a bit of exploration, this off-the-beaten-path gem is sure to leave you in awe!

Today's calm sea conditions made it easy to spot Mr. Liable, our resident male s***m whale. Ever so calm and imposing with his massive tail, Mr. Liable makes whale watching seem like an effortless task! You head out, spot the massive tail, and return. But we must remember that it isn’t always this simple. Whale watching is an activity that requires patience, even if it's just waiting for Mr. Liable to resurface!

Did you know that Mr. Liable’s dive times can actually vary quite a bit? Sometimes, we only wait 25 minutes, but his dives can last upwards of 50 minutes too!

What a beautiful day at the ocean, full of wildlife.
We didn’t need to go far to see three of our residents: Bottlenose dolphins, Common dolphins, and S***m whales, along with our summer visitors, the Atlantic Spotted dolphins. A highlight of the afternoon was the curiosity of an individual S***m whale—it’s always surprising how intelligent and spatially aware these animals can be.

S***m whales possess the world's most powerful bio-sonar, a tool that is perfect for creating a sonic map of their surrounding environment—no better tool for hunting in the deep!

What a fantastic day out at sea! Our morning trip started with light rain, but nature had a treat in store—a massive rainbow 🌈stretched across the sky! And it wasn’t just the view that was magical; we were lucky enough to encounter 3 different species of dolphins: Atlantic spotted dolphins, common dolphins, and even a pod of bottlenose dolphins. 🐬
By the afternoon, the weather improved slightly, and though the rain cleared up, the excitement didn’t! We spotted more common dolphins and were treated to an unforgettable sighting of s***m whales!
Did you know s***m whales can hold their breath for up to 90 minutes and dive as deep as 3,000 meters? These deep-sea explorers go to depths where sunlight can't reach!

Last week, we had the honor of introducing our intern, Jorge Figueroa, to the UAc.FEG - Faculdade de Economia e Gestão - Universidade dos Açores! 🚀

Jorge comes from Chile and is with us under the NATOUR project, part of the International Ecotourism post-graduation program. He shared a unique perspective on the development of inclusive and sustainable tourism, drawing from his experience as the founder and president of TrekAndino, a non-profit organization that offers tourism experiences for everyone, with a special focus on people with disabilities, those in vulnerable situations, and the elderly. 🏞️

Additionally, Jorge has been a faculty member at Inacap and also took on the role of coordinating Outreach and Innovation projects at Universidad Tecnológica de Chile. His passion and dedication to the sector are truly inspiring!

We are especially grateful to UAc.FEG for their dynamic role in fostering such impactful discussions. A special thanks to the entire faculty and, in particular, Professor Daniela Fantoni for her dedication which made this event a success. 🙌

We are very proud to have Jorge as part of the team during this internship period.

Just got back from an incredible whale watching trip! 🌊🐋 We were lucky enough to spot several calf S***m Whales swimming alongside their mothers—such an amazing sight! 🐳

The same happended with the pod of Dolphins, we saw so many babies swimming alongside their mothers. We never get tired, there is nothing as beautiful as the mohters taking care of the little baby dolphins.🐬🌈

Did you know baby S***m Whales nurse for over two years and stay close to their mothers for protection? It's fascinating to witness these family bonds in the wild. Truly a day to remember! 💙

On today's trips, despite the cloudy skies and some rain, we were able to spot Common Dolphins, Bottlenose Dolphins, and even S***m Whales! 🐬🐳 The sea was a bit rough, but it only added to the adventure. Truly an unforgettable experience seeing these majestic creatures up close! 🌧️
Did you know that Bottlenose Dolphins can use tools? Some dolphins have been observed covering their snouts with marine sponges to protect themselves while foraging on the ocean floor. 🐬🧠

Today we had two amazing whale watching trips! We saw common dolphins, Atlantic spotted dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, s***m whales and even sei whales.

Did you know that Atlantic spotted dolphins are a seasonal species in the Azores, typically seen during the warmer months? Lately, we've been seeing fewer of them, most likely due to the decreasing water temperature, but it’s always exciting to spot them.

Both trips were filled with incredible sightings. Looking forward to the next one!

Another day with three of our resident species, both on our morning and afternoon trips, we encountered three of our resident species: common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and our beloved s***m whales. Although s***m whales are well known for their deep foraging dives, they also frequently perform shallow dives. These shallower dives are primarily used for traveling, socializing, or resting.

At 2,351 meters (7,713 feet), Pico Mountain is not just the tallest peak in Portugal — it's an adventure that pushes your limits and rewards you with breathtaking views.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐛:
→ 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙡 𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙩𝙝: ~7 km round trip
→ 𝙀𝙡𝙚𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙜𝙖𝙞𝙣: 1,100 meters
→ 𝙏𝙞𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙪𝙢𝙢𝙞𝙩: 3–4 hours
→ 𝘿𝙞𝙛𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙩𝙮: Moderate to hard (depending on weather & fitness level)

As you ascend, you pass lava fields, lush greenery, and stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. Every step reminds you of nature’s raw beauty and the strength within you to keep going. 🌿

When you finally reach the top, the world below seems surreal. The view of the surrounding Azores Islands floating above the clouds is unforgettable. It’s not just a physical victory, but a reminder that any challenge — like life’s peaks — can be conquered with determination.

So, whether you're an avid hiker or trying something new, Pico is a climb worth making. 💪🌄

Today the funniest thing happened when in the area of the Bottlenose dolphins, from our catamaran, called on the radio-"He is here, our friend is here!". 🐙🦑

Who were they referring to, none other than the Iconic Mr. Liable. The resident s***m whale that roams the Archipelago. The blow is so unique due to Mr. Liable's blowhole so if you know, you can immediately know that our 14.98m of pure joy is in Sao Miguel. 🌈🐳🐳

It is a fact that S***m whales in the Azores dive for about 45min while foraging yet sometimes this rule is broken like today, that Mr. Liable dove for a total of 58min.😜

We wonder whether he was able to catch a meal but we certainly do hope so. 🐙🐙

But the ‘𝙇𝙤𝙣𝙜𝙞𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡’ is more than just a road — it’s home to the 𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙧𝙤𝙖𝙙 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘼𝙯𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙨, measuring over 9 𝙠𝙢! This straight is the same length as the distance between the islands of Pico and Faial — imagine if there were a bridge connecting them! 🌉

Daily Sightings: September 13, 2024

✅ S***m whales
✅ Pilot whales
✅ Bottlenose dolphins
✅ Common dolphins
✅ Atlantic spotted dolphins

Today a “full hand” of five species! 👋 We encountered both pilot whales and s***m whales in waters over 2 kilometers deep, an ideal habitat for these expert divers as they hunt squid and octopus. 🐙🦑

Interestingly, both species share a distinctive round head, which helps them with echolocation while navigating the deep ocean.

It was a long day on the water, but well worth it!

𝐕𝐮𝐥𝐜ã𝐨 𝐝𝐨𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐡𝐨𝐬: 𝐀 𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 🌋

Did you know that one of the most remarkable volcanic eruptions in the 20th century happened right here in the Azores? 🌍 On 𝙎𝙚𝙥𝙩𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧 27, 1957, the 𝙑𝙪𝙡𝙘ã𝙤 𝙙𝙤𝙨 𝘾𝙖𝙥𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙝𝙤𝙨 erupted on the western tip of 𝙁𝙖𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙄𝙨𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙙, completely reshaping the landscape.

The eruption lasted for 13 𝙢𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙝𝙨 until October 1958, adding over 2.4 𝙨𝙦𝙪𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙠𝙞𝙡𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨 of new land to the island! Nearly 2,000 people were displaced, many of whom immigrated to the United States.

Today, Vulcão dos Capelinhos stands as a 𝙨𝙮𝙢𝙗𝙤𝙡 𝙤𝙛 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚. The surrounding area is now a barren but beautiful volcanic desert, home to the 𝘾𝙖𝙥𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙝𝙤𝙨 𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝘾𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙚, where visitors can explore the history and geology of this epic event.

A natural wonder created through the immense forces of nature! 🌋
