Look another reason to come to São Roque! This is such a beautiful park and the volunteers and staff at Casa Sao Roque will look after you. I know as you was a volunteer there myself! Awesome bunch.

Community announcement!!!. My husband found an Andante card today near Corujeira Hall belonging to Diogo Matos. A 13-15 year old student. Does anybody know him so we can give his card back?

Things have been busy in São Roque with all the Winter Storms and life getting in the way of FB. However, there are still places to tell you about here in the "hood". Recently we needed two 2 new front tyres for our car. Peugeot quoted an exorbitant amount and João down the road here in Sao Roque quoted us a great price. Needless to say we saved and our vehicle is roadworthy! Take a spin and say Olá.

São Roque has always been a village on the outskirts of Porto, in Campanhā. What attracted us to the area was the village feel. Here we are 4km from downtown, away the hustle and bustle, the throngs of tourists and the sprawl of pedestrians yet we can reach the hotspots Porto offers in a 4 Euro Uber ride or 1.60 Euro metro! Better still I can walk and take a different route every time.

Here though, we know our local butcher, we know the folks at the local bakery, we buy "ovos caseiros" from our local fruit and veg store and we eat and drink in the establishments of people that have lived here for generations.

Sure it's changing and we love that too, we are one of a handful of "estrangeiros" investing in this suburb.
The locals are also investing; new art galleries, restored homes, new services, new business and new people. Most importantly Sāo Roque is attracting attention. This attention is what the area needs for investment from the municipality. We are proud of Sāo Roque come and check it out.

Arco Iris Confeitaria Every Saturday before or sometimes after I head to the Vandoma market I grab a coffee and a treat . Manuela, Marcello and the team ALWAYS greet me with a massive genuine smile and a big HELLO!

I feel special in there and can practise my Portuguese without feeling nervous or embarrassed.

They have delicious coffee and a small range of yummy treats. It is an Old Skool stand up bar service kind of place. It reminds me of those grab and go coffee outlets in Italy.

Gotta love the simplicity and all the locals that swing by to down a coffee or grab some rolls who also give a big smile and natter to you as a local.

You can find them from 6.30am to 8pm

Our poochie, Pipoca, was smelly and had wild woolly hair
She is a rescue dog so rather “ fragile” and very scared. Cristina from PatyZoo told me to bring her for a bath and grooming when I went to buy dog food.
Patricia the groomer did a fab job!!
Consider taking your pooch for a pampering in São Roque, plenty of parking, metro 5 min walk and very reasonable prices for a salon experience.

Autumn was short ( just like summer was) this year. The leaves have fallen but the park is here to people watch.
Praça da Corujeira has an interesting history. It was the original cattle yards for the nearby matadouro ( 200m away) and a rumour persists that it was a place to purchase staff! Houseboys and girls etc. This requires further investigation.
Recently some lost pigs wandered into the park. Not little pigs massive pigs. The cops had to watch them until transport could be arranged.

Have you got a black leather jacket?
Whenever I tell people we have a full on rock bar down the road they have a shocked reaction . It soon turns into intense interest when I talk about how welcoming it is. Antonio is the owner and has opened the doors ( literally) to us when we were new to São Roque. He is a local boy and knows everyone around here. The bar hosts local and International bands and is available for private functions.
Check out their FB page for upcoming gigs or just head over to shoot some pool, drink some Jamieson or get out of the rain in this subterranean rock haven.

Why do we love São Roque ( Saint Rock) well he is the patron saint of such great things.

He is a patron saint of dogs, of falsely accused people, bachelors, and we know him as the Patron Saint of The Plague AKA The Black Death - which is fitting for a Halloween Post! I will be lighting a candle for St Roque this all Saints day.

Saint Roch or Rocco (lived c. 1348 – 15/16 August 1376/79 (traditionally c. 1295 – 16 August 1327[2])) was a Catholic saint, a confessor whose death is commemorated on 16 August and 9 September in Italy; he is specially invoked against the plague.
He may also be called Rock in English, and has the designation of St Rollox in Glasgow, Scotland, said to be a corruption of St Roch's Loch, which referred to a small loch once near a chapel dedicated to St. Roch in 1506. (wikipedia)

The name is Nobel Restaurante but we call it “Amelia’s “. The owner, Amelia ,along with her awesome staff only serve high quality produce. She runs a very clean, tight ship & the no smoking rules are enforced. We love eating whilst sitting at the old long bar. The patrons are welcoming and there is always someone to talk with.
