The tram started running in Porto in 1872, for the first time in Portugal. They were called "americanos", as the tram was pulled by horses, a concept imported from the USA. In 1895 one of the lines was electrified, making it the first electrified line ever in Portugal and Spain. Did you see the couple holding the door from the outside? In the old days the kids were travelling for free like this and people called them "gunas". "Andar à guna", ie. traveling for free, is still an expression in use nowadays in Porto.

[EN] A lot of guests ask us what they do in Winter, as they think there's not much to be done. Actually there's a lot to do all year round. In this case, they're using horses in old vineyards, as they're so narrow that they can't use machines.
