Discover the Joy of Nordic Walking: Easy and Beneficial!

Most people on holiday or resident abroad usually enjoy a leisurely stroll in the sun, enjoying the sights and sounds of nature. This is very popular in Tavira and the surrounding areas, but have you ever tried Nordic walking with Scandinavian sticks? There are numerous wonderful benefits of this simple yet effective activity.

What exactly is Nordic walking? Well, it’s similar to normal walking, but with the addition of specially designed poles that you use to propel yourself forward. These poles, often called Scandinavian sticks or Nordic poles, are like your walking partners, supporting you every step of the way.

Why is Nordic walking is so fantastic:

Full-Body Workout:

Unlike regular walking, Nordic walking engages not only your legs but also your arms, shoulders, and core muscles. By actively using the poles, you’re essentially getting a full-body workout without even realizing it. It’s a great way to tone those muscles while enjoying the great outdoors.

Improved Cardiovascular Health:

Nordic walking gets your heart pumping and your blood flowing. With the added resistance from the poles, you’re increasing your heart rate and improving cardiovascular health. It’s like giving your heart a little love tap with every step you take.
Joint-Friendly Exercise: One of the best things about Nordic walking is its low impact on your joints. The poles help distribute your weight more evenly, reducing the strain on your knees, hips, and ankles. This makes it an ideal activity for people of all ages and fitness levels, including those with joint issues or arthritis.

Enhanced Balance and Stability:

Balancing yourself with the poles as you walk strengthens your core and improves overall stability. This is especially beneficial for older adults looking to prevent falls and maintain their independence. Plus, it gives you that extra reassurance as you traverse uneven ground.

Mental Well-being:

Let’s not forget about the mental benefits of Nordic walking. Spending time outdoors, breathing in fresh air, and connecting with nature can do wonders for your mood and overall well-being. It’s a fantastic way to de-stress, clear your mind, and boost your mood.

Versatility and Accessibility:

Whether you prefer a leisurely stroll through the park or a brisk hike along a scenic trail, Nordic walking can adapt to your pace and preferences. Also, you can do it just about anywhere – from city paths to country or beach walks – making it a highly accessible form of exercise.

So, whether you’re looking to boost your fitness, unwind after a long day, or simply enjoy the beauty of nature, Nordic walking has something to offer everyone. It’s easy, it’s enjoyable, and best of all, it’s good for both your body and soul and its FREE. Happy walking!

Tavira Municipal Market - A must to visit.

The Mercado Municipal (municipal market) is the heart of Tavira’s culinary scene. Situated on the southern bank of the town, this unassuming low-rise building comes alive each morning with bustling activity. Here’s what makes it special:

Early Morning Fish Market:

Fresh Catch: The main draw of the market is the lively early morning fish market. Local fishing fleets bring in their fresh catches, which are promptly sold to local traders and restaurants. This vibrant auction has been the pulse of Tavira’s maritime heritage for many years.

Fruits and Vegetables:

Once the morning frenzy subsides, the market transforms into a haven for fresh produce. Locally grown fruits and vegetables fill the stalls, offering an array of flavors. Grab juicy cherries, sweet strawberries, or refreshing watermelons for a beach snack.

Unique Souvenirs:

Looking for authentic gifts? Explore the colorful flower and vegetable section. Consider purchasing Doce do Algarve, exquisite marzipan sweets shaped like fish, vegetables, and fruit. These delightful treats are unique to the Algarve region and make for perfect souvenirs.
Local Honey and Salt: Don’t miss out on local honey and salt from the nearby salt flats. These natural treasures capture the essence of the Algarve.

Practical Tips:

Timing: Arrive early to experience the market at its liveliest. By mid-morning, most fish is already sold.
Affordability: Prices at the mercado municipal are signif**antly cheaper than those in tourist shops. Stock up on fresh goodies without breaking the bank.

Location:

The market is situated on Avenida Don Manuel I, the main road crossing the Rio Gilao on the eastern side of Tavira. Look for the bland low-rise building adorned with a massive market sign.

Tavira Market is more than just a place to shop—it’s a sensory journey through the flavors, colors, and culture of this enchanting town. So, grab your basket and treat yourself to what is on offer.

Tavira Camara is cutting water pressure.

TAVIRA CITY COUNCIL is carrying out tests with water pressure to find a viable solution to reduce urban consumption by 15%, as determined for the Algarve as part of the fight against drought.

From March onwards, restrictions on water use will be applied in the region to save reserves as much as possible, which are already at below-average levels and could only last until summer if nothing was done.

The urban sector, including municipalities and tourism, are having to reduce consumption by 15% and agriculture by 25%.
The mayor of Tavira, explained that Tavira Verde, the company in charge of public supply in the municipality, began to evaluate the impact of reducing pressure in taps on January 30th between 00:00 and 06:00, in various areas of the city, to understand how a 15% reduction could help.

We are experimenting, with phased reductions to know exactly how much we can save and if possible to extend hours.

The Council of Ministers will regulate the restrictions to be applied in the Algarve, and a decision by them could be known on Thursday, as to what measures can further adopted.

It may not be enough just to reduce pressure and a study is underway to look at the possibilty if we can apply cuts greater than 15% to those who have two meters, which are normally extra pool meters and for gardens”.

Tavira Council thinks that at the moment the reduction in the consumption of second meters could be more than 50% and possibly even 70%.

In terms of increasing the tariff, for now, the Mayor of Tavira said the Camara would not accept the proposal to increase prices made by the entity that regulates the sector and would focus on involving people and getting them to really save as people are more sensitive to this than to the increases.

WITHDRAW MONEY FROM AN ATM WITHOUT YOUR CARD

You can now leave the house and withdraw money from the ATM without needing to carry a bank card.

People can now leave their wallets at home and only take their mobile phones with them to make their money withdrawals on the Multibanco network. The first step is to have the MB WAY app installed on your mobile phone.

For those who jave not heard of MB WAY, it has several uses, including making purchases online and in store, using ATMs and sending money to others.

You can download the MB WAY app and associate your bank card with your mobile phone number, setting the PIN for your MB WAY account.

Once your MB WAY account is set up, MB WAY withdrawal is a feature of the MB WAY app that allows you to withdraw money from ATMs on the Multibanco network. There is therefore no need to use a bank card. You will only need to use a numeric code or simply scan the displayed 'QR Code'.

To obtain a numeric code, simply access your MB WAY app and choose the “Withdraw Money” option. Next, you will choose the amount you want to withdraw. Finally, click on “Generate Code”. You can also select a contact and send the withdrawal code to someone.

If you prefer to withdraw money via 'QR Code' you must first click on the green Multibanco button and choose the “Use Multibanco” option. Then, open the MB WAY app and choose the card you want to use and select the “Use Multibanco” option. After that, you have to read the QR Code with the MB WAY app, which is on the Multibanco screen, and enter the MB WAY PIN in your app.

ALGARVE: THE TOURIST SEASON MAKES A STRONG AND WELCOME RETURN

The president of Turismo do Algarve has announced that the tourist occupancy rate for June in the Algarve is expected to be around 80%, with around 17,000 passengers to be disembarking at Faro airport.

"There is a clear sign in the resumption of demand from national and foreign tourists, which is more robust than the perspectives at the beginning of the year", said João Fernandes, estimating the occupancy for the long weekends in June at around 80% .

According to the person in charge of the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA), bookings from June to October "are at levels close to those of 2019", with the return of traditional tourism from the United Kingdom and Ireland, and also golfers, which in recent years "has shown signif**ant drops".

In addition to the 100 flights per day arriving at Faro airport, the long weekend this weekend, the Corpus Christi bank holiday on June 16th and the municipal holiday on June 13th in Lisbon and elsewhere will also attract many Portuguese to the South.

As well as the the British and Irish holidaymakers, French-speaking visitors from France, Belgium and Switzerland are on the increase, plus the arrival of groups of companies that travel to the Algarve to hold meetings.

The president of RTA warned, however, of the lack of manpower in various sectors of the Algarve, and also in Tourism, due to the fact that there are "less and less young people entering the job market". He said "before, people went to the Alentejo to look for workers", but now that region has also developed its own tourist sector, the "only possibility is to recruit people from outside the country".

"It has been difficult to meet the needs we have" he said, despite the fact that the region has "signif**antly increased" the wages paid in the sector.

He pointed out two "challenges" that would solve the problem: "speeding up" the mechanisms to bring in labour from abroad, namely, with the help of the Foreigners and Borders Services (SEF), and "ensuring decent conditions" of residence for these workers, who are increasingly permanent.

It is not yet possible to conclude whether the war in Ukraine contributed to the increase in foreign tourism in the Algarve, but the region certainly benefits from the fact that it is far from the conflict and that Portugal is considered a safe country.

According to the president of the RTA, Portugal gave “a good response” in the fight against the covid-19 pandemic and the Algarve received some international awards during the pandemic, which “reinforced the notoriety” of the region.

"We are reaping the fruits of the work that we have been developing", he concluded.
