May 14 and 15 - Independence of Paraguay

It was ten o'clock at night on May 14, 1811, the cathedral bells rang. It was not usual, but they constituted an agreed signal among the patriots to begin acting. Captain Juan Bautista Rivarola, Lieutenant Vicente Ignacio Iturbe and Pedro Juan Caballero left the house where the latter lived and went to the Ribera Barracks, located on the east side of the Cabildo, where Lieutenant Mauricio José Troche handed over command to them. Caballero, in possession of the barracks, told Velazco to hand over power, and Velazco gave a rather ambiguous response as he sent armed groups to the patriots' barracks and surrounded it, and these groups were in turn repelled by gunfire, forcing them to flee quickly. At dawn, two cannons were placed in the square, pointing towards the government house. Faced with this injunction delivered again by Iturbe, and in the presence of numerous civilians who showed solidarity with the revolutionaries, Velazco chose to agree to everything requested and at 11:00 in the morning on May 15, Paraguay was free from Spanish rule.
In the Congress of October 1813, with justified pride, the phrase: “First Republic of the South, in the unique and invisible Paraguay” was incorporated into the official documents.
In 1842 the act of Independence was solemnly signed, persuading the world that the decision to be free was irreversible.

“Since its inception, the native peoples of chaco have been performing rites that are an expression of their worldview and values. Today, the practice of rites is an important element for indigenous people to connect with their ancestral culture, as well as the opportunity to live experiences linked to their original customs.

This ritual activity also provides an opportunity for the survival of certain artisanal techniques. Among the many elements of clothing related to ritual activity, masks stand out for their visibleness and their originality.”
